  • Ok guys you asked for it so you got it! Here is a short video from my brothers shop as he just finished the MILLION MILE service on this 2000 International 9900I with a Cummins ISX CM570 engine that produces 600HP. This rig rolled in with 934,000 miles on the clock and was in need of an "In-Frame Overhaul". Now that the pistons, sleeves, main bearings, rod bearings, one of the cams and a new cylinder head just to name a few things, it is time to adjust the valves, injectors and exhaust brakes. Let's see what this is all about!

Spent my 43 years as a heavy duty truck mechanic. Made great money never ever work not one! Had great employers. Some of them Union some of them not. Never a dealer! All were good Union was better. Four of them were independent shops last one was a fleet shop for 10 years. That one was the best! Chased us around with a money tree. Never worked under flat rate. Lots of road service calls which I enjoyed. Of course, living in Sunny California those were pretty enjoyable. So was the money!

Thanks a million guys for this vid: as a retired truck/fire truck mechanic it took me back to the job I just LOVED to do. Never regretted a minute of it, even tho it was hard and dirty and often cold out in the open, especially when doing vehicle recovery. Never made much money at it either, but money's not everything.

I think it's just the difference between production intent. ETCG has made it clear many times over he's not a live shop, it's a studio doing cars stuff. SMA is clearly different in that regard and reminds me a bit of the really old ETCG videos. Everyone matures into their own thing. With that said SMA videos are awesome and I would love watching a Doug channel on the heavy stuff. The commentary with Eric O is great too. In the meantime check out the channel of Stephen Cox, has some pretty neat heavy equipment mechanic videos.

Only thing that grinds my gears on the Cummins are the feet that contact the valve bridge. Total pain trying to slip a feeler gauge in there when they are covered in 15w40. Great vid though, makes me glad that the QSL9 and C7, 3126 that I deal with on gensets are HEUI and dont have Jakes. They just fire up and head for 1800rpm as quick as they can. Overhead sets get done every 3000 hrs on them, and usually we are surprised if the green ones make it to 16000 before they puke a crankshaft. Now that is some carnage.....90% engine load and 1800rpm, then blammo.

Nice. I'm always interested in how things work. My father drove truck and rebuilt one engine but I was in the Army at the time. Its kind of amazing how such little things like your phone ringing will cause people to stop watching. Its like you are some production company and ma only able to do videos not realizing you have to make a living. I don't know what you make off you tube and don't care. Your experience and expertise you share in your videos are priceless to me. Maybe you should ask the one's to leave to share their videos to show you how easy a video is to make. Bet 99.9% don't. And as far as torqueing things, I know at least for me, overtime you just develop a 'feel' for things, like when I was a jeweler and could just shape bracelets and necklaces without even thinking about it. You do something a few thousand times and it tends to stick with you. Not sure about those 'duck' boats though, saw where some people died in one. Thanks for sharing.

"Did you pull the coil wire so it doesn't accidentally start?" Funny stuff! I ran my Cummins powered 06 Classic XL to 990k. Then left it @ Pittsburgh Power while the wife and I took 2 months vacation. While there, it got an out of frame and an uprate from 600 to 800hp. They dynoed it first and it was still in excellent condition, very little blow by etc. That's what good maintenance does. The trans, rears and front end were also gone through at the time. I basically got a brand new tractor for 1/2 the cost as well as time with the wife and family. Win/win situation!

Keep up the good work...good to see family together too. I understand what it takes to operate your own business. It makes for long days missing family time.
Hey...grab a camera and take us along with you to New York, Doug. I think that would be neat! Anybody else agree??
    Have a great week guys.

Watched in Sept 20. What a pleasure to see two brothers working at the top of their game and enjoying it. I think the Cummins fuel system was called "PT" for pressure and time those being the methods of fuel control on the mechanical injectors.
Not being as familiar with setting valve clearance (UK) or lash, I have always taken the precaution of trying to insert the next size feeler gauge which should NOT fit into a correctly set assembly. In the video I would have tried a 15 thou following the 14 used for setting.

My poor old Cummins is only at 480 thousand. It is the early '98 but I didn't put all that mileage on it. When I bought it the clock was just over 400K and I just wanted somethin to drag my 5th wheel around. I had been using a Chevy 1 ton but I was always having heating issues from the automatic transmission so I made a point to find a standard transmission with a Cummins. It has surpassed my expectations and continues to do the job well although a little slow on the hills. The whole rig tops out just over 20 thousand pounds so it has a right to be a little slow on the hills.

DO IT DOUG! DOOOO IT!! :D
I laughed at the coil comment there LOL! "You just disconnected the coil, right?" , "Yeah". HAHAHA! Some newbie engine folks may not have picked up on that one. :)
This was great! First time I've seen inside one of those. I hear from my buddy who's been driving for years about in-frame rebuilds, and the removable sleeves, etc., but was nice to actually see it.
Love those diesel pistons - I have a set of 6 out in front of my barn here. Came out of one of the trash trucks I used to drive years ago. Weigh about 10 lbs each! Not quite 5", so a bit smaller engine, but still huge by my standards. I've done more motorcycle and OPE engines than car engines over the years. Tiny little 1" pistons in some - some even smaller! Heavy truck valves are bigger than the whole piston/con-rod/crank assembly combined, lol.
I would definitely love to see some big diesel carnage! Never seen one blow up before.
I had an old P&H excavator here with a 2-stroke Detroit in it - I let my neighbor store it here while in the process of moving. Would take a shot of ether to get it started, but once running, it ran great - never been rebuilt. Thing used just as much oil as diesel, lol. Surprised it didn't run away on us. Runaways make excellent CZcams vids, HAHAHA! I think we created a brownfields site here between the leaking engine and hydraulic oil, LOL. What a BEAUTIFUL sound out of those old 2-strokes though! Nothing better.
