    Regarding navigating between scenes part at 57:23: A couple things are different in the newer versions of Adventure Creator. The "Engine: Change Scene" is now "Scene: Switch". Also, the player wouldn't walk to the center point in the second scene until I replaced the center "Player Start 2D" with a regular "Marker 2D". Then everything worked like a charm. Really appreciate this video as it seems to be the only one to cover that topic! Just adding some extra info to help others trying to do this now. Thanks for making this video!

    Hi, First of all, Your graphics looks great and all the best for your game. Second, Thanks a Million. You have no idea how much it helped me. You teach like you are teaching to an elementary kid and that is what I wanted right now. I am a designer and wanted to create an adventure game (No programming knowledge). I was checking out this adventure creator for a week and not convinced to buy it until I watched this tut. Now I believe I can create something good with this AC as your tutorial gave me hope. Thanks a lot man. By the way if you could get time, kindly create more tutorials that would be a bless for us. The topics can be on Dialogue system, Inventory, Inventory Gui above which you have, combining inventory or a puzzle in a scene.
    Once again thanks a lot.

      +Hari Shankar Thanks for your comments and well wishes on the game! Glad you found the tutorial helpful, honestly I had a really hard time starting out in the software myself, and felt like there needed to be a major hand-hold tutorial -- just to get people started on the right track... Adventure Creator really is an amazing and very useful set of tools, but definitely has some major initial learning curves. It's funny you mentioned the elementary vibe from the video, I do teach Elementary Art for my daytime career, and have been involved in theatre for years, so not surprising those vibes come through in the videos. Really, I just set out to make the tutorial I wish I had when I started out, glad so many people are finding it useful. I'll be working on my game again this summer, and if I learn any new break-through techniques for dialogue and inventory I will definitely make some new tutorials. Chris Burton, the creator of the software does cover dialogue and inventory in his official 2D game tutorial, once you get the basics with my getting started tutorial, you may find his resources to be very helpful. Also, his official Adventure Creator manual is very thorough (if hard to understand at times when you're just starting out). Thanks. Isaac

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 7 lety +2

      Games made with the Adventure Creator Game Toolkit fall under the normal terms of the Unity contract. You can use the free/ indi version of Unity, and can publish your game for free. However, if your game sells more than $100,000.00 worth of copies, you need to upgrade to one of the professional versions of Unity. The free version of Unity has a "Made with Unity" splash screen at the beginning of your game, and has a few other limitations. Refer to the Unity website to find out more between the free version and the pro versions. For most people using Adventure Creator, the free version of Unity should be fine. Hope that helps.

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety

      +GaymerJosh I don't have a solution/ recommendation on hand, I'm fairly new at the software myself, try posting the issue on the Adventure Creator forums... they'll probably ask for a little more description of the problem, and some screen shots of some of the settings. Chris Burton, the creator of the software, is very active on the forum and would mostly likely have a solution for you before too long... there's probably one tiny (but important) step being over looked from the game set-up, I'm just not sure what exactly that could be at this point with my modest experience. If it was me, I'd be spending an evening or two with trial and error; most likely there's somebody on the forums who have experienced a similar snag in the past, and who are willing to share.

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety

      +GaymerJosh Actually, I'm having a faint memory of a possible solution for the no vertical movement problem... did you check the "ignore gravity" checkbox when setting up your character...? Thank you so much for making and posting this tutorial! :D
    I've been playing around with Adventure Creator, getting to learn the interface and some of the quirks it has. (But I still love it!) Watching this helped me in terms of making my demo more polished and be able to transfer from scene to scene!
    If there were things I'd wish to know, it's two things:
    1) How to work with triggers/inventory by knowing how to pick up something for the inventory, have the game know the item is gone during that time/that event has happened. (I remembered the water bucket from the earlier demos.)
    2) Although not covered, I'd like to make the interface more like the classic Sierra style, having the top bar be the interactions list, and the pause screen looking much more stylized.
    Oh! And Callahan's Curse is looking more and more gorgeous the more you work on it!! I really can't wait to play it!!!

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety +1

      +Jon Causith Thanks, man! Sorry it took so long to get back to you! There is an official short video by Chris Burton on working with triggers in Adventure Creator, he demonstrates using them in a 3D scene, but it works the same for 2D -- Triggers actually work very similar to hotspots, but rather than clicking on it, you walk onto (or off of) it to "trigger" the event, such as an interaction or camera movement. If you set up your character using my tutorial (rather than the official tutorial), it will be all ready for integrating with triggers. I have done very little with inventory integration so far with Adventure Creator, but it looks very simple! I used inventory a ton with AGS, and that was a pain to learn initially... I decided since switching to Adventure Creator, I want to focus on setting up each scene the way I like before turing my focus to character and room interactions and inventory management. Chris Burton's original 2D game tutorial actually covers inventory pretty well! That's where i learned from initially. And his manual is very thorough. I'll be getting to some inventory starting this summer (hopefully), and if I learn some snazzy ways of doing it efficiently I'll most likely share a video about it later in the summer (long way away, sorry! I teach full time, so when school lets out for the summer, that's when I have more time for my game development). I do know, any object that you want to have the game remember anything about after you save and quit, you also need some sort of a save state component added to the object, I can't remember what it's called... But, you should be able to find it in the manual or on the Adventure Creator forums! It is definitely covered in Chris' 2D game tutorial video! Oh, and last thing! The original icon based interactions! Yes, you can do that, and I think without too much trouble... you can define that characteristic in your game settings... I haven't set it up that way myself (I know I had it that in my game videos previously in AGS, though since switching to AC, I've been considering new methods of interacting to make my game more iPad/ tablet friendly). Again that would be a good thing to ask about on the forums or to search for in the manual, sorry I can't be of much help there, but I know I've read about it before, so I know it should be possible without too much trouble. Best of luck! Isaac

I know in the build settings, the game should be able to export to Android, but as far as interface goes, you'll have to think ahead about how to interact with the touch-interface.
      I know the Manual on the Adventure Creator website has recently been overhauled, and would be a great place to start for questions like that! If you are having trouble finding answers, there is also great community support on the Adventure Creator Forums, you can post a question there, and it will be seen by many Adventure Creator users with varied experience!

      Hi Isaac,
      I'm glad to hear that your are planning additional tutorials.
      What I really would like to see - and what you have started in your last tutorials - is how to design the overall game flow.
      As in from the opening cut scene, having the player go through several scenes (which you have already explained in your first tut), to picking up items and finishing the game with a cut scene when all conditions have been met.
      The vast majority of Unity tutorial that I have watched explain various aspects of scene creation, and the only ones that show a start to finish workflow are for very simple games.
      So - a prove of concept tutorial that shows this workflow would be great. Just very simple artwork, 3 scenes with items to pick up and the final cut scene when all conditions have been met.
      On a side note - do you have any advise on how to use animated shadows with a sprite character?
      When my character walks I am using an animated shadow, but I'm not sure how to link that animation to the characters sprite animation. There were some vague references in the AC forum about that, but not enough to get started with that.
      The reason why I'd like to have the shadow anim as a separate sprite is that I would like to be able to change its opacity as needed.
      If you have any idea on how to link and integrate the animations into ACs character controller that would be most appreciated.

      Sounds great! I'm taking multiple courses in Udemy and I would be definitely interested taking also one on Adventure Creator :) Is it going to be a throughout course (going from animation to dialog and compatible third-party assets etc.) or is it going to be more like a basic course?

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 7 lety

      My goal is to make it an extensive Adventure Game creation course, going from developing a story, character design, logical puzzle design, 2D animation techniques/ workflow (including tips on creating 8-pose 2D walk cycle), practical dialogue writing, effective music creation, voice acting recording and technique, background art, with some specific software implementation in Logic Pro (Music), Photoshop (painting, layering, exporting), Moho Studio (2D animation), and Adventure Creator (bringing the assets together and building the game)... Though, I will have an emphasis on concept, so viewers could moderately translate the ideas into comparable software titles... The course is intended to help those interested in Adventure Game design that may have some talent or desire in some areas, but struggle in other areas... for example, maybe they're great with story already, but struggle with creating art assets, maybe they're great with background animations, but struggle with character design and animation... I want someone to feel like they could feel confident experimenting in the broad range of skills needed in Adventure game design and creation... so it wouldn't be so much an exclusive "Adventure Creator" course where every tiny trick and secret is revealed, more like pushing someone in the right direction into the broad concepts of game design, and helping them to develope the asset creation skills along the way... in short, the course I wish I had 10+ years ago...! :p Though lucky for us, tools and technology has changed since then, giving us a lot of advances in making Game creation more achievable for a general artist/ non-programmer!
      So, people could skip the sections they were already strong in, and focus on the extra areas they needed help with, or view/ participate in the course as a whole to get an alternate perspective on game-creation from start to finish.
      It was just too much for me to justify it being free on CZcams... more appropriate for a paid course.

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 7 lety

      In the future, I would consider doing shorter "software training" type courses, but I feel for me, this course that covers the multiple facets of Adventure Game creation available in a central course would be more of a priority... plus there are soooo many free-ish software training courses floating out there now on the internet (maybe not so much for Adventure Creator, except for what Chris and I have put out)... Rather than a "How to Use Photoshop For Everythjng" course, I want it to be a "How to use Photoshop in Adventure Game Asset creation" in the context of the larger course... if that makes sense... :p A lot of work to put it all together. :)

    Thank you for the videos! It has really helped me out. I have a question: Did you use the finished animation for the player right away when starting making the game, or did you use a placeholder? And if so, how did you change from the placeholder to the player without messing up interactions and so on?

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Kibbika, glad you're finding the videos helpful! I finished the main walk cycle before I started putting the assets together in unity... however, if you decide to use a placeholder animation... just create the animation in unity as if it was not the placeholder, give it the correct names, etc, and the graphic(s)/ sprites that you drag into the animation timeline can be placeholder... when you have the real graphics/sprites ready, just delete the placeholder ones right out of the animation timeline, and drag the new ones in... that's it... it won't effect the interactions in any way.

      Sounds like the size of the left animation sprites doesn’t quite match up with the rights... try going into the animation for those directions, one at a time, and making the first frame a little larger... this will scale up the sprites for the whole animation. Test it out and keep adjusting it until the size matches the other directions. If this doesn’t seem to help, try posting your problem on the official Adventure Creator forums and see if anyone is able to help you there. :)

      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety +1

      +Sally Mae Hello, you don't need to have bones for your sprite. I animated my character with bones in a separate animation program, and then exported each frame as a PNG image to use in unity. It gets mentioned later in this tutorial. As for the backgrounds, are you looking for digital painting techniques, or process, or wondering more about composition/ layout/ elements and principles of design, or just working with photoshop layers in general? This video tutorial doesn't teach how to create original art assets as there are many ways to go about that, but rather once you have the art assets, how to work with them to incorporate them into an Adventure Game. If you let me know exactly what you are wanting to learn about with background creation, I could possibly link you to some tutorials on the process... I personally haven't made a tutorial specifically for adventure game background creation, but I could possibly do that, if we aren't able to find other tutorials that meet your needs. Thanks.

      Hi Jim, so far I've only experimented with mouse movement... The Adventure Creator forums would be a great place to ask about Keyboard movements. I remember reading about being able to use different types of input for movement in A/C, so I can't imagine that it would be too difficult to set up.

    Hi Isaac, I was wondering if there is a simple way to alter the character's appearance or armor? Basically I would want to replace their current animations with new ones. I have seen this done with Visonaire studio but I was wondering if there is a way to do it in AC? Thanks for your help as always!

      @ArtistComposer  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello Jim. You can switch the default walk cycles and talk cycles and idle cycles just as easy as calling up a custom animation, the only difference is you choose "Set Standard" instead of "Play Custom". So... Character: Animate: Method; Set Standard, Change Talk, Run, Walk or Idle, then type in the name of the new animation clip for example "FredWalkArmor" and check the box that says something about using multiple directions... (if you've made a separate animation for each direction)... for example "FredWalkArmor_D", "FredWalkArmor_L", etc. This will change the standard for the character only for that particular scene though. If you want the character to still have it's armor in a different scene you could tie it to a Global Variable, for example, "Fred Has Armor = True", and at the beginning of each Scene OnStart Action Script, you could do a variable check for "if Fred Has Armor = True, Then..." and paste in the same animation scripts regarding assignments for Walk, Talk, Idle, etc... Hope that helps! Also, on the Adventure Creator website, the Manual has just been overhauled from the ground up, with pictures, notes and pro-tips throughout... should be a lot more helpful than before. :)

    Hi Isaac, I have been looking through the manual but I haven't found an easy way to do this. Is there a simple way to have scenes with no character for things like menus or puzzles? I have been able to do it by switching to a transparent character but this seems kind of sloppy. Thank you!

      For game menu's, I have a section for that in this tutorial...
      czcams.com/video/Y64CB01KPYw/video.html&lc=z23bcjealoynhveob04t1aokg1nw2t1gtd3mybtv1u2jbk0h00410
      For areas of a game that you do not want any characters visible, there was a discussion about that in the comments section of the same tutorial... Look at Melody Nelson's question about the farmer scene with another "view" or close-up shot outside of the main camera's view. Expand to read all of the replies to that commen, I think that might answer your question.

      Hello, under your game editor settings, in scene settings, make sure you have a camera assigned to your Default Camera setting, and make sure it is the camera you are expecting, and make sure the camera is pulled back a bit on the 3D plane... to do that, in the scene editor window, click once on the 2D button (at the top) to switch to 3D mode, select your camera, and pull it back a bit on the Z-Access (the blue arrow). Click the 2D button once more to exit out of 3D mode...
      You may have missed one of those steps from the video... take a breather and go through it all slowly, hopefully it will work out for you. :)

    Hey Isaac, thanks for the tutorial, very usefull ! I just have one question : How did you do with the animated background ? The seashore scene looks really good ! On my game I have to animate a big smoke cloud, a loop of 4 frames, what should I do ?

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety

      Thanks! Most of my animations, I paint the pieces in photoshop, and animate them either in Anime Studio Pro (now MoHo Studio), or directly in unity if the animation is simple enough... can you send me a screenshot of where you need the smoke, and I could give you some suggestions on how to approach the animation...

    • @666ganon666
      @666ganon666 Před 8 lety

      Thanks for helping me. Here is a screenshot of a small part of my bg. The smoke should be a loop and I also want to animate some packs of long grass all around the scene but something discrete. What do you think ? drive.google.com/open?id=0B5zi5UNvNjiPX3FqNHl5ZE5CN3M

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety +1

      Looking nice! Okay, for a suggestion on the smoke animation... Think about an "S" curve... Let the smoke lean to the right then back to the left, and let it change form a bit when it leans to the right, but not too much or the loop will be too obvious, just a subtle change in form, just enough to see that it is in motion and then let the movement come back to the original form... Smoke this far in the distance is very slow moving, you won't need a whole lot of animating... For the grass, since they're only a few pixels each rather than focusing on the movement of each blade of grass, think about the movement pattern across a larger area... Almost the way a crowd will do the "wave" at a sports game... start the movement on the left with a few blades, and let the movement carry across a larger area... Imagine the wind pushing across the blades of grass to cause the "wave" effect... Or if you'd rather the grass move more sporadically, as if the direction of the wind isn't clearly defined... Just have each blade bend over to the left or right and back again, not every blade at once... Maybe a few on the left right and center in the first animation, then some of the blades i-between for a second animation sequence... Hope that helps...!

    • @666ganon666
      @666ganon666 Před 8 lety

      Exactly what I had in mind. The feeling of waving grass is what I want to reach. Something like they they often do in Ghibli movies. But now that this question is clear, it raise others ones... How technicaly should I do it in unity ? Should I just drop the smoke or grass gif or animation folder directly in the scene ? And how it works if I want some randomness? I mean : having the grass anim lunched slowly, wait a random number of seconds before the anim start again. Even randomize the speed could add a little "life-like feeling". I am used to make art and animations but unity is totally new for me ! Oh and thanks for the help, I apperciate it a lot !

    Have you ever used sprites unity complex for the player character instead of sprites unity?
    im asking since i cant seem to trigger any other player animations that arent just the player movement sprites since im using sprites unity.. and seems like the key is using sprites unity complex instead. =(...
    ive tried to figure out how to use sprites unity complex but cant figure it out and my character doesnt have an up/down sprites so ultimately i should be using sprites unity complex for that reason too instead of sprites unity but unfortunately no tutorial on how to use sprites unity complex for adventure creator & the manual aint helping!
    Any way you'd ever consider doing a tutorial for setting up a player with no up/down sprite using sprites unity complex?

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 8 lety

      Hey man, sorry you're having trouble... I haven't used Sprites Unity Complex before...
      When creating custom animations for your character, other than the default move options, you have a couple choices... if it's for one direction only, you can uncheck the box "use multiple directions" and that might force the animation to play correctly... occasionally I have also pasted my animation frames into other directions that I never intended to use, for example, if I want the animation available for only the right direction and the left, I would make the Left animation frames and paste them over the U, UL, L, and DL directions... so basically any of those directions would call up the same animation (and same for the right using, UR, R, DR and D). That has put a bandaide on that problem for me a few times. However, it doesn't seem to be the best way of handling it... I hadn't looked into Sprites Unity Complex, maybe that is the best answer...
      You might try posting your problem on the A/C forms with more perticulars of how the problem is called up, and see if anyone there has more experience with that...

      I do have one small section on variables in this tutorial video here... czcams.com/video/Y64CB01KPYw/video.htmlh5m17s
      That will give you a small intro to variables. Now, for your specific question... You can accomplish that with a set of local variables. Lets say your code is 3 - 5 - 1... Make 3 local variables... One that says "First number is 3", one that says "second number is 5" one that says "third number is 1". They should all be set to false by default. Then you can call upon the variables in your scene. If the player manipulates the first number in your combination to read "3", then trigger a script to set local variable "First number is 3" = true. You can do the same for the other numbers in the code. When they click to see if they can open the door, have that trigger a script that checks to see if all local variables for the code are now set to true (check the numbers one at a time)... If "First number is 3 = true" then check local variable "Second number is 5 = true" then check local variable "Third number is 1 = true"... and then finish the action with a change of scene (since the door is now unlocked). At that point, you can also have a global variable that says "Padlock unlocked" and set it to true. When they first click on the padlock, you can have it check the global variable of "Padlock unlocked" and if it is true, then skip to the next scene, and if it is false it can trigger the padlock puzzle. I hope that helps. Thanks.

      @@ArtistComposer Is it necessary to use the bone rigging system? Because I am not exactly sure how to do that, I know how to do frame by frame and putting the legs/arms/head in different layers. or is it just more simple

    • @ArtistComposer
      @ArtistComposer  Před 5 lety +1

      @UCmRdO9koyWIdjRoXtsnKX1Q The short answer, yes, you export the animations as a PNG sequence. Bone rigging or frame by frame is an artist choice, so long as you bring in the frames as PNGs you should be able to follow along with this video... The long answer... this 2 hour video doesn't cover the creation of the art assets, only bringing the art assets into Unity and starting a scene with Adventure Creator.
      Creating the animations can be a long and involved process with many different approaches.
      Last year I spent 9 months putting together a 19+ hour video lesson course that goes over my specific processes on how I animate the characters as well as many other topics in 2D Adventure Game Creation.
      Due to the amount of time it took to put together the the whole course, I was not able to offer it for free on CZcams. But if you're interested, you can check out the course description page here... www.udemy.com/2dadventuregame/?couponCode=CZcams999
      If you're wanting to purchase the course, the above link already has the embeded coupon code CZcams999 which gives my CZcams subscribers unlimited lifetime access to the course videos and supplemental content for $10 (the lowest price that Udemy will let me offer).
      If you're looking for free video solutions. Try searching for "2D bone rigging" or "vector based 2D animation" as a start to see some of the processes for other modern animators. Thanks for the interest, hope your game goes well! Isaac
