- Hi everyone, today I'm taking you with me as I explore Englands largest second-hand bookshop, which is Baggins Book Bazaar in Rochester. I also have a book haul from the trip and I show you a few of the sights of Rochester, including Charles Dickens writing chalet.
Let me know in the comments, have you read any of these books? Thanks for watching.
Thanks to my very patient husband for buying me refreshments, and filming some excellent b-roll on this visit to Rochester.

Gosh, Rochester is gorgeous! And so cool that Charles Dickens lived there! And the Bazaar is a gorgeous bookshop! And I've never even heard of Dombey and Son. I'm always amazed with how many books Dickens wrote!
He certainly did write a lot of books! My mum recommended Dombey and Son as a really good one, so I’m looking forward to it. Thanks Anne for your comment. 😊📚
Currently, reading CD's DOMBEY and SON. ♥️ Wonderful story!
@@hyacinthh6900 glad you’re enjoying it. I really want to get to it this month. 😊
I need to visit that shop! Though once I’m allowed to buy physical books again of course! Love the old Penguin covers. What a great haul!
I’ll take you there one day when both our TBRs are back under control! 😂
@@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf deal! 😂
Looovely video Alice, seems like a great place 😊Interesting haul. I really should finally read some Dickens at least this victober! :D
Such a good place! Highly recommend reading some Dickens. I think it’s worth starting with one of the ones that follow one character like David Copperfield or Great Expectations. I loved Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend too, but both of those have many many characters to keep in mind. 😊📚
I love Rochester ❤️ Store 104 is lovely with the cafe at the back as well. £2.99 is a steal
Yes I forgot to mention the cafe and the great yarn section, it’s a really lovely shop. 😊📚
Never let me go to that shop - can you imagine!!
I think I may try Oliver Twist at some point. I need to try Dickens again for sure.
You would buy everything! Buddy read Oliver Twist in 2025? 😂
I have that same edition of Dombey and Son and I love the cover!
It’s beautiful! I was so happy to find it. 😊📚
Wow, I could spend hours in that bookstore 😍
Me too! 😊📚
RIP Alice. You are missed
So fun to see the bookstore and great finds!
Thanks Brandon, it was a bit of a treasure trove in there!
I could spend ALL day there ! Can you bring a sleeping bag ? Lol ! By coincidence i live near Rochester NY. Have a wonderful weekend ! Ps. Small outside & big inside, just like theTardis !
Thanks David, It is certainly a Tardis of books! 😂📚
Whoa what an awesome looking bookshop! Thanks for sharing it with us
I could have stayed in that paperback section for a very long time!
Thanks for sharing the bookshop with us!
You’re welcome, had to share such an amazing shop! 😊📚
This was incredibly educational and very enjoyable!
Thanks Andrew, I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😊📚
Yay for that gorgeous bookshop and love your copy of dombey and son especially 💛
Thanks Em, I’m really pleased with my new Dombey and Son. 😊📚
Amazing secondhand bookshop. Love it! 👍
It was really big and full of treasures! 😊📚
Fantastic tour and that store😍 could literally spend all weekend in there. That’s worthy of expanding tbr!
Me too! It’s an amazing treasure trove, which I will have to stay away from until I’ve read some more from my shelves! 😂
Hi Alice that was a wonderful vlog. England and bookstores! I want to go there today since I live in Hawaii I'm going to have to wait. I read Oliver Twist when I was very young and thought it was quite scary. I enjoyed it though it has triggers. Many hugs and Aloha sent
Thanks Marilyn Maya, I’m glad you enjoyed this little vlog. Bookshops are very dangerous for me but I loved this one a lot! 😊💛
Oh wow looks like you got a lot of great books there!!
Thanks Kevvie, that bookshop was dangerous for the TBR!
Defo read Dombey, top notch. Great to wander through Baggins, could get lost in the book maze.
I will! Looking forward to it. Could definitely lose myself in that shop for a long time.
Yes...I remember my Dad having John D McDonald's books, Eric Ambler, ........ how about Desmond Bagley??
Those Dickens books that you picked up were a bargain!! I think I would feel quite overwhelmed in those big book stores so you did well navigating them☺️
They were, I was really pleased with them. I spent most of the time in the fiction section, especially in the paperbacks upstairs, I could have stayed a very long time! 😊📚
Oh, oh, oh! Thanks for this video. I was looking for a big second hand bookshop in Lpndon when I was there in May, but was quite disappointed. There are som nice ones, but none of them is really big. But this one. So next time in London, I will make the 40 minute journey from Victoria on the South Eastern...
This one is big! And as you say, not far from London by train so might be worth a visit. I’m glad you liked the video. 😊📚
Hi Alice. Nice to find someone online who shares our passion for books. We are complete novices who have the idea of opening a bookshop when we "retire". We are keen to find some knowledgeable guides who can give us some insights. Do you perhaps have any suggestions for us? Thank you.
Unfortunately Alice recently passed away, you can see the recent post on the Community tab on her main page
Great finds! Wow! What a shop! It would be a nightmare for me because in secondhand books shops, I always want to check every single book, just in case I miss a gem!! 😂📚
There is that! Once I had about 5 in my hand I had to stop looking in case I found more gems! 😂 I was only really looking for fiction so spent most of my time in that paperback section where I could happily have set up home for the day! 😊📚
I only own 2 novel by Dickens: Oliver Twist and David Copperfield which is massive. I will probably read David Copperfield for Victober.
I highly recommend David Copperfield, although it is large it is one of my favourites and it is easy to follow the story in that one. 😊📚
@@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf Decision made: “David Copperfield” will be my pick for Victober. I am going to start reading it early. I want to finish it by the end of October. The version I own is 729 pages. I don’t want to rush it and not enjoy the experience. I would also like to read “Great Expectations” at some point. So MANY BOOKS so little time.
When I saw this thumbnail, I thought, uh-oh, the giant bookshelf doesn't have a chance. 😂 I had no idea Bob Dylan wrote a book! My youngest son loves Dylan, too. Baggins is one awesome place!
It didn’t stand a chance in there! I’m glad I went though and if I need a specific book for a readathon or challenge in future I will look there first I think! 😊📚
I think it would almost be criminal not to have picked up that copy of Oliver Twist !!!! That book by Bob Dylan, what a neat find. Looks like you had such a fun day out and about. I agree, when you go in to a second hand book shop, you have to take something home with you.
I’m glad you agree with me, Karen. Couldn’t pass up Oliver Twist! It was a great day out and I could spend a long long time in that bookshop. 😊📚
Not a sci-fi reader in general, but LOVE Wyndham. I’m having to eke his books out now so I don’t run out too soon. 😅. Midwich Cuckoos is great (but, to be honest, all the ones I have read so far have been really enjoyable).
I think I should eke them out too, I can just tell I will love them! 😊📚
It is like a Tardis bookstore, it is bigger on the inside...
Absolutely it is! 😂📚
Can pick up great bargain books 2nd hand..!!
Lots of bargains to be had in this second hand bookshop!
