In the middle of the day a 10 stop neutral density filter is the perfect tool for extending your exposure time and creating amazing shots. With long exposures static subjects remain sharp but any movement becomes soft and blurred.
Getting the best from these filters requires a little bit of planning and in this video photographer Gavin Hoey explains the steps you need to get perfect long exposure shots. And as Gavin discovers, the beautiful city of Venice is the perfect place to capture long exposure photos.

In addition to explaining this very well, these are some of the best travel photos I've ever seen.
Gavin Hoey is such a positive person. I enjoy every video with him.
Always enjoy your learning videos Gavin! Excellent examples and instruction!
Set exposure to 1/30, manual focus, grab 10 stop ND filter, change shutter to 30 seconds, shoot! Simples! Thank you Gavin for this great video.
I probably should have just said that Mark. Nice summery :)
What us ND filters?
dubs mash ND filters are dark filters suitable for long exposure photography.
When you say set exposure to 1/30, is that the same as the shutter speed so a photo wouldn’t be under/over exposed at those other settings
Gavin Hoey always inspires me enjoy his easy presentations

Thank you for this useful video. I'm planning to visit Venice next month and wanted to get a ND filter for my Fujifilm and luckily found your video explaining the ND filter in Venice.
I have to say I love the fact you shot this in Venice Italy as that is where I am going in 3 weeks, and specifically just upgrade my old DSL to a new full frame and have been learning about ND filters so I can take amazing shots around town and from my hotel balcony on the Grand Canal.
Thanks, Gavin and Adorama. Great Video
really amazing shots
Beautiful shots with ND filter. I'm going on a viking tour and one of them is going to be Italy; good idea to bring a 10-stop filter. I'm glad I found your channel

You have covered absolutely everything to do with long exposure thank you also for the tip of the 30 s exposure!
You always inspires me in small small tips that you give in the video , like covering the view finder as well as switching off the image stabilization mode in long exposure. And the sample shots were great too.
Thanks. Covering the viewfinder can make a HUGE difference to DSLR cameras. I learned that the hard way ;)
Thanks Gavin, I'm visiting Venice in a month, hope to get some great shots

Thanks Gavin, very nice video and very informative!
Thank you so much, finally I understand
Wonderful straightforward tutorial . Also proof that you do not need an expensive camera to get great results… A great photo is taken by the photographer and not the camera 📷.
love the shot with the boats ghosting :)....
Great images Gavin and good to see you out of your studio again.
Cracking stuff Gav. Love the closing shot in particular. Bravo matey 👍🏼
Thanks Will :)
Great shots very informative 📷
you are my hero - well explained
thanks for the tips, will try it out!
Another great video thanks Gavin.
Thank you Gavin. Lovely shots and a great revision for me about long exposures. I always forget something!
Thank you! Glad you also talked about white balance because I sometimes forget about it.
Love some long exposure images. I have found that using live view on a dslr, I can usually compose with the filter on. I also sometimes multiply the exposure by 1024 if the cheat doesn't quite work for 15 or 30 seconds.
Thank you, great tutorial.
Great video. Clear and concise. 👍🏻
Wow.. that was nostalgic to see the Grand Canal.. Was nice to see Gavin Hoey standing in the same place i stood in near St Marco earlier this year :). I wish I had shot similar long exposure shots.. if only i had known.. Thanks for the lovely video as always Gavin :).
