The attack on Fort Vaux showed no importance for the final outcome of the Battle of Verdun.
Yet the bravery of the fort defenders would make the battle famous.

I've actually been to this fort twice. It's really haunting but also very interesting to visit the remains of it, I suggest anyone who visits Verdun go there.
I've seen videos of Urban Explorers exploring the tunnels of the Maginot Line. Despite there never being any significant combat in the tunnels themselves, they do look pretty creepy :S

Although the French were forced to surrender Fort Vaux in 1916, the German Fifth Army respected their enemy's defense so much that their commander Crown Prince Wilhelm, the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II himself, personally visited the fort commander Major Slyvain-Eugene Raynal and gifted him with the sword of a French officer to replace the one that Major Raynal had lost during the siege. The French soldiers of Fort Vaux were so heroic that even the literal heir to the German throne honored them.

WW1 in a nutshell: Huge attacks with large casulties just to capture irrelevant position and by the time you take it your attack force is too decimated to hold it and ends up losing it to the enemy counterattack

The troubling part is that in the circumstances of the western front, a frontal attack was the pretty much the only option.
And by the time you captured your goal, it is already blown to a million pieces, making it impossible and very useless to defend, regardless of strategic positiob
And whatever minor breakthrough you achieve is quickly contained as enemy reinforcements arrive faster than your units can exploit the opening.

We may have forgotten these men’s names, but we will never forget their heroism and bravery, even if the war had no true purpose.
Their names? Oh, they sure are not forgotten. Sure, you might not be able to trace each and every single soldier who was sent to Verdun's meatgrinder. You might not be sure of who was sent where in the generic area of Verdun. But military archives know who was in which unit, and where units were sent.
No purpose? I'd say for France, it was retaking Alsace-Lorraine and preventing the Germans to take more territory.
My grandpas grandpa actually fought in ww1 for 4 years as an infantry man. He spent 2 years in Verdun, he had lost his teeth when he was defending a dort (we dont know which one but it is likely that it was a recapture) and got hit by a shovel which knocked out most of his front teeth. He survived the war. On the other hand, My maternal great great grandpa died in Verdun
Everyone keeps saying the French always ran away, little do they know the French were some of the fiercest and most cunning fighters history has ever seen.
When people say “French ran away” I believe they mean france in WW2, but your point still stands
muh they needed british and russian help lol
@@tituszvaldner2588 that Russian help really put a dent in the German army let me tell you...
@@tituszvaldner2588 what's your point?
Anyone who sums up the French military history based on the circumstances of 1940 is an idiot. France, alongside Britain, has been one of the most powerful and influential nations in western civilization for a thousand years, that doesn't happen if you are a nation of “cowards” as some put it. Its actually quite disgusting how people make fun of the French veterans of ww2 especially when the fault lay with the French high command, not the soldiers. Is the U.S. military full of cowards because they lost the vietnam war? Defeated by an inferior foe? Iraq or Afghanistan? Are the veterans of those wars a bunch of cowards? Of course not yet some feel its okay to laugh at men who died fighting against literal nazi’s in a hopeless situation.... France is a great nation with a long and proud history and their performance at the battle of Verdun and the Somme prove that.
