Kevin Holland is that kid on Modern Warfare 2 that trashes you about being better than you then when you invite him to a 1v1 on rust or Highrise. He starts losing, realizes he is worse, so copes by spending the rest of the 1v1 trick shotting and trying to knife you or find the Highrise crane glitch off the map and falling off. Just so he can say afterwards "of course you won I wasn't even trying" taking away what would've been a humbling moment because he can't face it. The best fighters think "it's sad that I lost, but at least I gave it my all" Holland thinks "it's sad that I lost, but hey at least I didn't give it my all, so now I don't ever have to face the reality that I wasn't good enough"
More power too him though, this is not meant as a hit piece, maybe he just has such low belief in himself that he would rather just beat up on unranked schmucks to make performance bonuses. But it is sad to see as a fan of him.
The most annoying thing about this is that it works, some of the top comments after his loss to JDM were "it feels like Holland wasn't even trying" all this does is take away from JDM's performance and make Holland never have to face the reality of a loss.
Elite analogy 😭😂😂
This is a wildly relatable scenario
bro amazing analogy lmao
Yeah ahahaha it’s like that clip of paddy rolling with some guy and getting caught in a submission and then switching to acting like he’s teaching him the submission and instructing him what to do and then he’s all ‘well done lad yeah put your arm there - that’s it lad good’

Holland has the 'I lost cause I wasn't even trying' vibes
Dude your picture is so gay even gays are like hey take it easy buddy. Lmao like what? This is CZcams and your posting pictures to your account like it’s a Facebook page lmao you’re mentally ill at best.
Exactly 😂
Nah he got the I lost cause the ufc keeps giving me hot prospects with no time to prepare it’s kinda fucked they gave him khamzat and jdm
That's literally the thesis of the vid.

Haha he said on joe rogan that was a gift from dana chilll😂
Kevin Holland is like Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting. Afraid to try and possibly fail. I think we all have some of that in us sometimes...I do as well to this day and I'm 38.
great movie never meddum
It’s not your fault 🥲
Everyone does but at some point it's go big or go home
Then u ain't a man lad
Maybe the analogy shouldn't be a one of a kind Maths genius
Kevin Holland is his own worst enemy. The moment he said that he makes his own schedule, I cringed. He clearly doesn’t want to be a champion.
If you've been watching the sport it's clear that he was never gonna be a champ in either divsion lol. Where did all these holland riders come from? I like the dude, he puts on great fights, but when did you come under the collective delusion that he was ever gonna be champ because he beat a few old men?
Journeyman
Nothing about his history in UFC made it seem like he was ever on a championship run. He was a "fun" fighter for a little while because he was so reckless but that same recklessness makes his fights hard to watch. I think he was going for a Diaz type too cool for fighting type of thing but it didn't work
@@lebosshogeh this last JDM fight was pretty wack
@@lebosshog he had ONE bad grappling performance then just never tried again. He beats these lower level guys fresh out of bed but he just wont put forth full effort. Its clear he wont fight through a challenge so we wont know how good he could be but we see flashes of it in his fights.
I could be wrong, but I think him getting ragdolled by chimaev put a lot of things into perspective for him. Losing the way he did would take the confidence away from most fighters. He noticed there’s levels in the ufc. Instead of trying to improve and truly compete, he’d rather just be a stepping stone for other fighters careers.
I mean he did say he was thinking about retiring after that chimaev fight
That and wasn't there also another wrestler he got dominated by? I can def see how both fights just made him lose all hope. Especially with how difficult it is to really master wrestling enough to compete with the top guys
Not a far fetch. Costa went from a title hungry contender to a troll that doesn't seem to ever show up when he's in the cage after what Israel did to him.
It has nothing to do with fighting Khamzat. He had the same "I'm not even trying" attitude when he fought Brunson. Holland was laughing and talking through the cage to Khabib while at the same time completely ignoring the advice of his corner as he was getting ragdolled by Brunson. As Guru said, it's a coping mechanism and Kevin has always had it - it's especially noticeable when he's having a tough fight, because that way he has an excuse to fall back on.
honestly I agree. Chinaev is going to end up ruling this division for the next decade. It’s not very exciting when a personality-lacking weird douche is the champion.
He self sabotages to have an excuse for losing. He's like Jon Jones minus the everything
Walmart budget poormans imitation of something close to Jon Jones
I have been a victim of this mentality, and for sure, i recognize some behaviors
He's insecure. The truth is he's not confident that he can realize the potential that he's tricked everyone into thinking he has. If he feels that he can't win a fight, he does the bare minimum to ensure it goes to a decision so he can save face, put on a fake smile and keep the "he could go so far if he REALLY wanted to!" aura that he has alive. He was being playful with JDM during their fight but after it ended he couldn't even look him in the eyes, no hug, nothing - it's clear he DOES care about the outcome of his fights, he's just afraid to commit because he fears the possibility of losing in a way that might expose him as a mid-level fighter. What's really annoying is you'll always see his fans feeding his delusions; if you want Kevin Holland to fullfill his "true potential", then maybe stop saying the things he wants to hear and start saying what he NEEDS to hear.
Yeah I do MMA. Mentality is such a big part. I don't get why Kevin doesn't have more confidence. Somebody broke him during his career. You don't get that timidity from narrowly losing fights, he felt somebody that made him realize he'd never be champ is my guess. And he is bitter about it still I hope he either finds the confidence or comes to peace and finds pride in becoming a top 15 UFC ww at one point in his career
Amen to all of this. You are dead on. He's like a spoiled child who can't take not winning so just throws any chance of winning away because if he can't wint 100% of the time, and he can't, then he wants others to think he could have if he cared about. He does care but isn't that talented.
Us as fans won't get to him either way. There's a process here and he's gonna continue doing it.
Virtually said this on fb earlier today. BRILLIANT post! : )
Would be interesting to know indeed. I know for sure the Vettori, Brunson and Khamzat fights didnt help his mentality. He probably got surprised by Khamzat, even with the built in excuse of taking the fight on short notice. And only he knows really why he is like that, so maybe he knows its better for him to keep the aura of "didnt even try hard", instead of getting knocked out and then losing money and fans or something. Maybe he knows he doesnt work hard enough and never will work hard enough to beat the top guys, so he takes the money and keeps his aura intact.
He will become the Michael Johnson of 170
Nah chill lol 😂
Bobby Green is a closer comparison imo
@@meatball2746green doesn’t have that same power tho, or seemingly so. He (almost?) knocked down wonder boy, has TKO’s at MW and WW, so he DOES have that power, green is a volume fighter tho

This Guru guy makes some damn good points… and often too.
Teddy Atlas made this observation after the Brunson fight a few years ago. He’s very good with the fighter psychology aspect of the game.
As a teacher, I see this mentality all the time with the coulda-woulda students. “I would have gotten that A or score or scholarship if I really tried.” It’s a defense mechanism for people who are afraid that their best may not be good enough. It’s a back-up excuse. He is the epitome of this mindset.
I’m glad you’re calling this mindset out because he’s going to wake-up one day full of regrets. It makes it so hard to be his fan. .
huh, interesting
I’ve felt this way about holland for a minute now and it’s wild, I’m a fan of him, I root for him, but he makes it hard to be a fan man, easy to like him and cheer for him, but I wanna see some drive some killer instinct some ambition to be the best. He’s got the goods, he’s still young and can improve, just needs that winner mindset.
My only guess for why he’s acting like this is cuz he’s happy taking fights against lesser opponents for good pay checks compared to the level of competition he’s fighting. When he inevitably wins those easier match ups and gets put against higher comp for the same money as before, he may just be happy to coast and lose without much damage done to him without taking risks of getting hurt. He could be prioritising fighting more often for continuous pay than less fights for maybe more pay if he wins
@@Venom-xd9stMaybe his fight with Khazmat broke him. You don't get mentally broken like that from close losses. At some pointe got fucked up and it traumatized him and he needs to grow past that my guess is Khazmat broke him.
How did you feel about him 2 minutes ago?
Why? He makes more money from having crazy good fights with low teir than if he were to climb the ranks and get blown out. No risk but all the reward is what hollands going with and I would to.
Mike Bell scored the fight for Holland making it a split decision
Did he really?
@craigmills6275 Yep. Same guy that scored the 5th round 10-8 for Grasso. Or so I read, anyway.
What a joke
I swear mike bell and John McCarthy’s son are always having the worst scorecards
This is very accurate, I never really thought about it this way. Holland's worst fear is being embarrassed in a fight, and he feels like he can't be truly embarrassed if he's not really trying to win or if he stacks the odds against himself
You know the thing about Guru you can’t deny. You have to respect his honest opinions from what he sees. He calls it as he is and honestly what he says may not sounds good but it comes from a place of nesting the best for the fighter and athlete.
Yeah he's a lot like Sewer King in that way, no filter.
Naw he is a rat. If he was what you think he is he would have made a video saying that he was wrong about Ngannou's situation with leaving the UFC, especially since he had alot of energy saying that Francis "fumbled the bag"

At 30 years young, I hope he makes the shift and pushes for that belt.
Kevin Holland kinda looks like that weasel that hunts dinosaurs in Ice Age
In sports psychology there are generally 2 mindsets that athletes have that motivate them, the need to succeed or the need to avoid failure. I think built in excuses allow Kevin to perfectly fall into the second category whilst allowing him to escape labelling himself a ‘failure’
There’s actually something for everyone to learn here… I know I’ve been guilty of the restrictive cope discussed in this video and I’m motivated to truly TEST my BEST now, even if it might not turn out to be good enough to beat the top of my field just yet

DC called Holland out for this on commentary on multiple occasions. Said he really doesn't like people talking in the cage because it means they're trying to take it less serious and avoid facing what's going on
Talking in the cage is not an indicator. Strickland does it all the time and he never takes fighting lightly. I think Holland not pushing the pace, not increasing the output against JDM where he absolutely needed it to win is far more reliable indicator

Also, I never understood why Holland keeps looking at 185, when he just entered the rankings at 170 at UFC 291. What's the point of starting over?
100% agree and was flamed for suggesting this during fight week. I hated his attitude in the lead up. Been seeing flashes of it in the past year but put it aside bc I am a fan... but I honestly didnt even care about his fight with JDM after hearing him get mad about the belt question. If you wanna be a gatekeeper then that's cool, but dont expect fans to hang around if you are going to come into fights acting like you dont care if you win. Once I saw that interview I was pretty sure he was going to lose and was on mma twitter pretty much most of the fight.
"I don't care about belts. WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT BELTS? HAVE YOU EVEN FOUGHT"
Turned me RIGHT off Kevin. These dumb dumbs need to learn what a spectator sport is. Haven't they ever wondered whats with all the cameras? You don't need to be an active fighter to have an opinion on a spectator sport.
Holland is built to be a world champion. Height reach frame + personality. The fans want him to get the belt more than he does
Best comment on this thread
Built to be a world champion with a 'fighting for title is not my goal' mindset
not the skill tho
Remember when he was on top of Thompson but then let him up for no reason. He could have played the top game and won that fight.
Bro you people are so delusional 😂 height and reach are two factors. There's WAY more variables to being championship material. Holland is not it.
Thank you for making this video, Guru. Holland really needs to hear that.
The way I see it chimaev destroyed part of his confidence, then losing to wonderboy on the feet and having a bit of a “friendly” fight where they were constantly touching gloves and messing around definitely changed his mentality. Now he knows there’s better wrestlers and strikers than him in the division and probably doesn’t believe in himself anymore and just wants to fight for the money
u might be right chimaev I think is what threw him off most
brunson and vettori destroyed that
@@doncardking2677 nah they never imo cause he knew he couldn’t wrestle and wanted to take WW seriously and move down so he can have more of an advantage with his range. Then when he lost at WW to two different styles I believe that’s what changed him

Very astute observation Guru. Holland clearly is terrified that he may not have what it takes to get the belt, and by making it clear he's not pursuing it, he protects his ego and his legacy from not ever getting it.
