How-To Remove Allison 1000 Transmission

Here is a short run thru of how to remove an Allison 1000 5-Speed transmission from a 2003 GMC Duramax. This process is the same for all 2001-2005 5-Speed trucks. While this process varies for 2005-present 6-Speed trucks.
Steps:
-Remove Starter, tie to frame rail
-Pull off fan (Unless you have a 36mm box end wrench)
-Remove torque converter bolts (x6)
-Remove rear drive shaft
-Remove front drive shaft
-Remove Transmission cross member
-Un-plug all T-case wiring
-Remove T-case breather
-Remove T-case
-Remove all Trans wiring
-Remove fuel line brackets
-Remove exhaust v-band
-Remove Trans cooler lines
-Remove all bell housing bolts
-Remove transmission

The only difference is internal. An allison 5 can be a 6 by changing the transmission valves for about $3k. Thats the only difference. I guess if for some ungodly reason you wanted to go from a 6 to a 5 you could as well by changing those valves.

Brakcets. Diesel lines. Shift cable etc.... Could have been popped off, pushed back instead of removed. Faster install

Torque converter bolts should be 15mm head and the balancer bolt 32mm. That is what my 05 LLY is.

Why would someone need to remove an Allison? Is it to make it a performance trans or did it break?

The Allison 1000 cannot handle much over stock engine power. Mine is being replaced because I added a little engine power and the Allison cannot handle it.

nice video. If you had a leak coming down the front of the Trans in the bell housing what would you think it is? serious or maybe just a torque converter seal?

front pump seal is most common, might has that leak. Then it can also be a cracked torque converter

Very common for fluid to leak past the pump to case bolts. GM has a tsb out for this, invovling replacing the sealing washers. We have found that this is a patch fix, as they end up leaking again. Best fix is to put some right stuff sealant on the bolt threads.
