This small project came out of a desire to use the potential of AI interpolation to help smooth out the movements of stop motion animations whilst retaining a cinematic framerate and recreating a somewhat believable motion blur effect.
The endoskeleton footage was interpolated 4x utilizing the RIFE AI implementation present in the software Flowframes 1.18.2. This footage was then downsampled back to its original 23.976FPS inside Adobe After Effects, smoothing out the jittery movements and adding a relatively convincing motion blur effect on top. Some slight camera shake and color correction was added to enhance some of the more static stop motion shots.
Im quite pleased with this initial result and intend to improve these shots with more advanced and state of the art interpolation models.

I've been wanting to see this done for YEARS. It looks fantastic.
With this kind of video technology, they could almost go back to stop motion models and just smooth them out. It's like combining the best elements of practical effects and CGI.

Sensational. I hope the James Cameron camp sees this and uses your talent for a new remaster.

Rife looks way better IMO. When you pause you can see some Blurrs on the endoskeleton compared too the stop motion where it looks like it's just a statue and it doesn't have animation. But I still give the stop motion props for a low budget film🙌🏻

Crazy how 5 million 1980's dollars are considered "low budget" you give to some new writer/director who's expected to make a poor movie by B movie standards.

@@47Mortuus it was originally 4mil before Cameron had Lance Hendricks who originally was the terminator terrified Hemdale producers and after that it was boosted an extra 2mil for the budget. So 6.5 was little in 84, most movies were 10+mil on budgets. But Orion Was a small film distribution back in the days.
