It's great that you watched the original before the remake. The remake did get a bad rap; but mostly because people were so fond of the original that it set the bar too high. But IMO the remake was a fine movie in it of itself.

I imagine in time it will get a bit more respect. I'm all but certain there were folks who shunned the original simply because of Seven Samurai.

This was a good movie and a decent remake. I love classic films so I still prefer the original one, but it's still a good movie. The Magnificent Seven was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954). It's a classic samurai film and if you enjoyed The Magnificent Seven then you should check it out. You can compare them and see which is your favourite.
Also if you like western then I recommend some of John Wayne's films. The Searchers (1956) and True Grit (1969) are pretty good.

I like both versions of The Magnificent Seven. The 1960 version was a slow burn before the action really started, but we got more character development with the seven main characters. The 2016 version is more action packed, but at a cost of character development among the seven main characters.
The Magnificent Seven is an American remake of the 1955 Akira Kurosawa film The Seven Samurai. I highly recommend watching that movie as well. It’s in Japanese with English subtitles.
The basic story of The Seven Samurai has been reused numerous times over the years. The most well known examples are, of course, the Magnificent Seven movies. There’s also a Chinese film called The Seven Swordsmen. And for American films there’s also The Mystery Men, which changes samurai or cowboys with superheroes. And then there’s Battle Beyond The Stars, which is The Magnificent Seven in space. Star Wars: The Clone Wars also did their own version of the story in Season Two, Episode 17, entitled Bounty Hunters.
I would definitely like to see Devin G react to The Mystery Men and Battle Beyond The Stars. I think that he would enjoy them.

"Red Harvest"?.Hmm. Red Harvest was a novel by Dashiel Hammet and has been cited by some as the inspiration for Kurosawa's Yojimbo. As We all all know, The original Magnificent Seven was based on another of his movies. So was this a subtle nod to the master. or just pure coincidence?

This movie actually makes me a bit sad because we finally got Denzel Washington in a western and he isn't portraying Bass Reeves.
Reeves was the first black deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi who apprehended over 3,000 fugitives, with a reputation so good that fugitives started turning themselves in if they heard Reeves was after them because it would be pointless to keep running.
Now go look Bass Reeves up and tell me that Denzel Washington isn't a time traveler.

As a kid in the 1960s I grew up with the old version and it eas one of my favorites. Then I saw this version just a short time ago and thought it was the better movie. Alot grittier, and I really liked the twist that Chisolm already knew the bad guy, and would've done the job anyway for his own revenge. Based off the Seven Samurai, which is one of the most influential movies of all time.
