Pond Pump| What to consider

  • At the moment I'm in the process of building another pond in my yard. I just purchased a jeboa DCP- 15000 - amzn.to/3yayUgX (amazon link, if you make a purchase i may receive a commission at no extra cost to you). I already have 4 of the pumps on my dream pond, I really like them.
    Anyway when I'm selecting a pump there are 3 things i consider:
    - How much flow i need. That is the amount of flow i need for the filter. Also the flow i might need for any jets, waterfalls or streams.
    - How much head height i need to achieve. In this pond i need to make sure i have enough for the filter and a 6m long stream. I also like to have a margin of error, which is why i like adjustable pumps.
    - Energy efficiency. I don't want to spend any more than i need to on electricity costs. So the lower the watts for the amount of flow i need the better.
    In the video i mentioned some other videos that will help clarify some aspects of filter design, flow, etc.

    Hello Kev!
    Over the past few months, I've been faithfully studying your amazing videos and have tried my best to implement all the pieces of golden advice you have sprinkled, so generously, throughout your videos.
    Today, I populated my first ever small pond with 4 freshwater shrimps, and although it is too early to tell; I feel immensely proud of what I have made in my backyard.
    This is all thanks to you, your channel and its stellar content!
    Mate, your an absolute legend, you need to be nominated as Australian of the year.
    Thank you!.. I couldn't have done it without your channel.
    Sincerely, Kevin :)

    Excellent video and great advice same as your others. I'm a fan of the jeboa pumps my first XTP 8000 has finally stopped working after 6+ years . I've replaced with a OEP 12000 very pleased with output considering my pond is 5ft deep & filters are 2 metres higher due to garden being on a hill I'm still running an XTP 8000 running my 2 bakki showers while I purchase another OEP 12000 to power showers and a bog filter. Eventually . Living in UK have to wait longer for them to be delivered from China .but much cheaper than buying from UK supplier .look forward to seeing your new project running

    Hi Kev, great, helpful videos! I'm so glad I searched for DIY pond filtering and hitting your channel. I sort of inherited quite a large pond and I'm having a lot of fun with it (the dogs love it too😉). The pond has essentially stood still for the past 4-5 years with nothing but rain interacting with it. I'm planning on adding a bog filter once I've worked out the surrounding area. I'm a bit confused about pump calculations though. The head height, is that just the difference in water level height between the pond and the bog or is that the distance from where the pump intake is and where the water is discharged into the bog? Or is it something completely different even? And does the amount of water in the bog not create backpressure that should be factored in? Or is that just what the "volume x 6" is for? And what if I need too much flow for one reasonably prized pump, can I just add another pump?
    Cheers

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před rokem

      “Head height” is pretty much all the factors you mentioned combined. Yes if the bog needs more flow than one pump can achieve you can use multiple pumps.

    wow, thank you for including the link to that pump you bought recently. I cannot believe the cost of the pumps from this brand. How is it that Aquascape and others can charge three times this. What am I missing. I haven't bought my pump yet but I'm just about to I looked at the Aquascape Aqua surge 5,000. Could you tell me how to determine which of these pumps from Jeboa would be an equivalent?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před rokem

      A few differences. The aquascape aqua surge pumps have a longer warranty, longer cord, aren’t low volt and aren’t variable speed. The jebao pumps you’ll need to keep the controller out of the weather and extend the cord yourself, that’s the only downside. There’s lots of other dc pumps coming to market now, so it’s only a matter of time till you can get a longer cord or extension and a weather proof controller. There is a 18000 & a 20000 model that will move around the same amount of water as the aquasurge 5000.

    Hi Kev we have a pond that's about 1200 gallons. We never put rocks or pebbles on the bottom of the pond, is it essential or is it strictly for looks.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      Not essential. It can help with keeping the water clear as it provides more surface area for bacteria. But if you have good filtration (surface area in your filter) you can still have clean, clear water 👍

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +7

    I understand your calculating bog filter size to the water pool and I get pump head height, but how does the volume and construction within the WHOLE bog filter factor in to these calculations? If head height is to the top of the tubing into the top of the bog filter, what of the extra tubing and water path through the substrate and its exit through any outlet?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      I don’t really understand the question. Knowing roughly the volume of the bog helps determine how much water needs to flow up through the filter. I hope that makes sense.

    • @leohorishny9561
      @leohorishny9561 Před 2 lety

      @@Ozponds , I guess...it means that the extra volume of the filter must also be factored in when considering how big a flow rate one has to calculate when looking at pumps and GPH and head height. Not ever seeing a bog filter in use, the idea of considering water volume leaving a pump and traveling up to the filter inlet, there will be additional restrictions, between: substrate, how you construct your plumbing, plant material, and outlet size, as to what your outlet flow rate will be, so that if you look at, flow rate at the inlet tubing into your filter, there will be a significant drop in outlet flow leaving the bog filter, such that, calculating pumping needs simply on pond volume and filter volume, won't fully result in what one will see...i.e., more pumping in is going to be necessary, to see an outflow that you can anticipate. Excuse any "tone", I'm only writing out what I'm trying to picture in my head, how things work. There needs to be an X multiplier in figuring how one's pond filter flow out compares to the volume of water in to the filter, it won't ever be a 1:1 ratio. I guess that's what I've been driving at....👌

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +2

      That’s why I just keep it simple. If I multiply the volume (when empty) by 6 and use that as my guide. Every time I do this I get great results. You can absolutely figure out all the variables if you wish that’s your choice. But then it’s going to be a different formula.
