  • This is just a quick video showing how I dig out my backyard garden fish ponds. The video aims to address some of the questions and issues I see when people contact me looking for advice one how to build their ponds. I hope it helps. I also prefer an ecosystem pond so this video is targeted at people looking to build a similar pond.

    I am so close to finishing digging my pond! Or so I thought - once I checked the level, I realised there was a lot of material still to go from the high side and I've managed to accidentally bury my whole bottom layer with loose material to dig out. I needed a little nudge in the right direction for how to level so this video came at the right time!

      Yes. I love nandinas! We grow quite a few different varieties. They can be toxic yes. But most birds stay away apart from the currawongs it seems they aren’t affected. The berries aren’t considered toxic to humans, although I wouldn’t go make a nandina pie.

    Any suggestions for a small duck pond improvements?
    Already running a 35gallon bog filter.(iys a premade round porch pond). This bog feeds back through a short 8foot or so long stream thats full of rocks.
    And a 2nd smaller bog filter(7 gallon bucket)
    Cant add fish, the ducks will eat them.
    I had some plants, but the ducks ate em to.
    Im running 2 pumps
    1 850gph on the small bog and a 1000gph pool pump on the bigger bog.
    I used the pool pump because i had it and it allows me to hook up a small pool vac to vac out the bottom a couple times a week.
    I also added a bottle of beneficial bacteria
    Id like better water clarity, should my bogs be bigger?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      The flow rates through the bogs is way too much. I aim for 6 x the bog volume or less. I’ve got lots of vids on bogs, designing, flow, etc.

    I'm currently building our home and we have a courtyard in the middle of the house where I think would be perfect for a pond. Our soil is basically pure sand, what is the best way to complete the steps in the pond? My thinking is the sand will collapse on itself.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +2

      You’ll probably need to dig a big hole and then use the large rocks to create the shelves. Then you’d backfill with the sand. Start at the bottom of the pond and work your way out. I think that’s how I’d tackle it.

    Hey man I have a quick question. I have a 2500 biofalls with kink free 1.5" tubing. Should I replace the tubing with a flexible pvc 2" tubing ? Would going with bigger tubing make a difference ? Thank you

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      I thought that filter came with two 2” ports. Pipe size is only important in relation to the flow of the pump though. I think this filter can take up to 20,000 litres per hour. If you are running a pump in that vicinity I would have used 2” tubing. It just allows the water to flow easier, less backward pressure on the pump.

    Visually these ponds look a lot bigger than what your describing. Or maybe my brain doesn't work right. This pond is only 60cm deep at the deepest part? I think this might be the right pond size for me. 20 cm drops for each shelf. Can I ask, What are the dimensions of the intake bay and the dimensions of the pond separately? My bog filter will probably be above ground near the intake bay. Thanks a lot for these videos.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes only 60cm at deepest. Intake is part of the pond (that area makes up less than 20%) the whole thing is about 5m at longest and 3m at widest.

    How do you determine the size of your intake bay and bog filter? I have the plan of making a, 20x13 foot pond(6.096x3.9 meter) but i want to do an intake bay and bog filter and im not sure how big and deep i need to dig it to make it proper for that size pond. Any advice?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      I’ll size the bog anywhere from 10%-30% of the pond volume. Depends on the pond use. A few goldfish 10%. Heaps of fish 30%. I’ve got lots of vids talking about bogs. The intake bay needs a void space that can accommodate at least 1minute of water flow. Again I’ve got vids that will help 👍

    Are shelves absolutely necessary to have structurally sound rocks stacked. Or is backfilling good enough?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      I think backfilling would be enough. You’ll just use more rock. With the shelves less rock.

    Hi, great video. I am currently digging a small pond, however I have started to find water coming in, not too much but it’s coming, I am only at about 15 inches, presumably this is the water table, I thought this was deeper? What do you suggest I do?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před rokem +1

      You can dig a drainage trench to a lower point. If that’s not an option dug the trench to a sump pit and pump the water out.

    • @daprip456
      @daprip456 Před rokem

      @@Ozponds ok but does that mean I have to have the pump running 24/7 or just until I’ve dug the pond

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před rokem +1

      Once you get the pond dug and filled with water the weight inside the pond should displace the water that is currently filling the pond, so no you don’t need to run the drainage pump 24/7. But if you ever drain the pond you’ll need to remove the water in the sump pit, otherwise the ground water will push your liner up.

    I notice you are building the pond very close to the foundation of your house. I have a pond in mind that will do something similar. Are you worries about water leakage toward your house? Do you do anything special on that side to protect against such a problem?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 11 měsíci

      Nothing special, just common sense stuff. Obviously the pond has a liner, then I just make sure that the overflow is directed away from the house and into existing drainage.

    I am currently digging my pond close to my house just like yours is set up. I am leaving about 1 foot of space between the wall and the pond. I was worried about the water being to close to the foundation of my house. I am also still worried about rain run-off from the roof of the house. I am planning on adding drains to try to avoid the run-off. any opinions on these two points Kev? Again, thank you for sharing your pond knowledge. I have learned a great amount from your videos and website.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      Well you never want water up against your foundations. But the waterproof liner means that there isn’t any. I’ve removed a few ponds in my time and the ground under a liner pond is completely dry (unless it’s leaking). In regards to the runoff you can just create an overflow and tie it into existing drainage or create a bit of a swale to transport the excess water away. Hope that helps.

    Heya Kev! What thickness of liner do you use? Thus far I have used 14 mm for a small fountain... and a 24 mm for a larger 2 section pond. Both of which after a year seem to have a small leak in them... I assume from placing stones onto the liner and perhaps the weight tore thru... I am unclear. Do you have any tips or trouble with leaks? Or am I just using to thin of liners. 44mm was my next purchase.... I thought about just lining it over the previous one to stop the leak.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      I like to use the Firestone epdm pondgard liners. It’s 1.04mm thick. The rubber is super stretchy (300%) it’s quite hard to puncture and if you do patching it is really easy. I have had a puncture before. I’ll send you a link.
