You'd be surprised how brazen they can be dude. I run a fleet business and we have the best security system you can get, 26 cameras all motion detected and a very heavy door that is rated to be able to take a ram from a huge truck.
Now I've never had a car stolen but..... Some dudes did come into my building and steal the HVAC aircon system, it is huge and they needee a Crain to get it into its position. These 4 dudes came in, in masks and carried it out. They did a professional job removing it too. When insurance covered the unit the installer was worried they would have wrecked all the piping etc but they did a good job blocked off everything that needed blocking off, shit off the power and removed the plugs properly etc 😂😂😂. So they had to have been aircon guys.
But even with the best security system there is all it will do is get footage of the crime most of the time, the alarm no one pays attention to those in industrial estates usually. So they just did it as fast as they could 3 and a half minutes from the time the backed in their truck to having on and driving away.
So even with those systems the best you can hope is they are dumb and have something in that footage that you get to give that to the cops.

I have another theory. That collector let it be stolen or he stole it himself and then it got stolen. You'd think with anything entrusted to another person's care they would wanna know the location of that item in their care until the original owner got that item back. Grill that "collector".. That is my hunch as to what happened. No one should be that careless. Using the "I thought you picked the car up" is a lame excuse. No I want to know who has access to that place is there any security footage and I wanna check around that building for obvious means of forced entry. Was any other cars stolen? Etc. Here in the US there are cameras in/out of every entry point, and multiple inside the DMV... if you try to register a vehicle that isn't yours you're going to be on video along with the vehicle you rolled in with.
Crazier still it was recovered with the chassis and engine intact.

I had a Mustang Cobra. Someone stripped the Cobra-specific parts from it when it was parked in a mechanic's parking lot (they were supposed to keep the car inside, but didn't). Weeks later my Nephew stopped to help someone whose car had broken down on the side of the road. It was a Mustang. While talking to the guy my Nephew noticed ... those "Cobra" parts on HIS car were specific to MY Cobra, not that person's faux Cobra. They WERE my parts.
When the guy left to get help my Nephew and his friend stole back the parts they could remove. The police later contacted me, they had arrested the guy for something else and asked me to see if I could identify the remaining parts. There was no mistaking them, so I got them back (quite damaged from his amateur removal from my car and install on his). I was glad to have them back though.
