    The negatives highlighted in this review don't matter so much to me. I am not a diver, so I don't need 200mm ISO certified dive watch; I'm happy to accept the savings there and I'll take the hacking winding movement. The folded links of the bracelet make it lighter but Seiko does those folded links very artfully. A lighter bracelet may be viewed positively by some, negatively by others. What would really be more important to me isn't on the old SKX either, a scissors style milled clasp. Seiko has been making watches longer than Rolex, so even if on paper the specs of the bracelet aren't top-notch, a Seiko band will be comfortable and everything will be be well executed so that the band is easy to resize and take on/off the case -- the addition of drilled lugs are a nice improvement for that.
    What I do miss in the old SKX are the more primitive but characteristic markers, which didn't have metal surrounds, and as the reviewer noted, the dots all the way around the bezel, and absent lume pit. These are things that contributed to the SKX's characteristic look, so in IMHO this watch's appearance isn't quite as charming. But for me, all things being equal, the improved movement & drilled lugs pretty much balance out the reduction of detail of the dial and bezel, and I don't really want another watch that doesn't have a hacking movement. So I like the Seiko 5KX a little better.
    I am glad there were a lot of negative early reviews ... it's helped keep the street prices reasonable!!!

    I have the SKX. As someone that never actually goes diving but loves the aesthetic, this watch is the superior daily watch for me. The improved movement , same classic dive watch aesthetic, exhibition case back, hand winding and hacking, and still at an affordable price point....it's really a no brainer of for me.

With regards to tips, 40 clockwise winds will fully manually wind the movement to its maximum power reserve from dead. Alternatively you should wear it 8-12 hours per day to wind it automatically. I love the new Seiko 5s bought 2 of them 100 m of water resistance is more than any of us will ever use I swim in mine get in the hot tub I've been in the ocean no problems the new 5 does everything my old skx does but hacks hand windes keeps better time +4 and -2 before regulation and has better lume. Overall better watch than my old skx175. But I like the Jubilee bracelet better which I am putting on one of my new 5s. I enjoyed the video

    Trouble is with this watch i think is people are reviewing it as a diver and calling it a skx replacement when in fact seiko have put it under the sports watch category although it is very similar looking is like comparing apples and oranges

    Why does the clasp have to be machined? You don't see it with the watch on. It does not perform any worse. I think it looks good with the pressed in recesses. It takes more engineering skill to produce a process to make these formed clasp pieces. Saying these need to be machined is just saying they need to be machined for the sake of saying they should be machined.
    I do see why people are disappointed about the pressure rating. I think Seiko realized that the SKX was taking customers away from their higher end dive watches. I think they want to 5 series to be more sport watches and not full on dive watches. So yes, this is a dive watch looking sport watch.

      it's because the cheapness shows. Stamped clasps are the cheapest, hollow endlinks are the cheapest, folded links are the cheapest. they all perform more or less as their more expensive counterparts, but it doesnt feel as nice to wear something that is, visually, cheaply made.

    Thank you for another great review, John. It seems to me that Seiko’s cost cutting policy on the specs of their lower tier pieces does the brand no favours. Reliability is important, but for many collectors the quality of the finish is important too. All in all, a disappointing watch. Regards

    • @watchreviews4k
      @watchreviews4k  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you for watching Mario. Agreed, the cost cutting measures are disappointing. Seiko have increased their prices throughout the range, without upgrading dated aspects such as hollow end links, and pressed clasps. I think they should have continued to make the SKX007, and just updated the movement to a 4R36, with solid end links and a milled clasp; as that would have been a very popular watch; even at a higher price. I have just bought an SKX009 for my own collection, and upgraded the rubber strap to a Strapcode Super-J Louis; which I am really pleased with. My SKX009 review will be live Sunday. I will review the bracelet next week. Wear your pieces in good health. Regards.

    Just found out today about these Seiko 5 sort of replacement for the SKX series . After considering the original SKX 013 from eBay but going for $300 to $450. used . Yeah the 100mm and non screw down crown is disappointing, but finding these Seiko 5 for under $200. new is very appealing. So I was considering the Seiko Srpd065 in black and fun metal. But I think I’m gonna go for the SRPD55 in silver bc I’ve had that fun mental with another high end Seiko in the past and it gets Mark’s very easily. Plus the SRPD55 looks the most close to the SKX version.
    But I’m wondering if this new Seiko 5 series came out or planning to come out with a 38” version like the SKX 013?

      When swimming at even 50 meters the movement of your arm can put too much pressure on the watch and cause it to leak even if it can technically hit 100m sitting still.
      Gotta be especially careful if you’re jumping into water, the impact can force water into the watch even at just a couple feet of depth.
