I live in Florida, USA and have a co-worker with a cockney accent. She told me that a lot of people here somehow mistake it for an Australian accent. I have to admit hearing a cockney accent in person is an odd experience for me. It's a pretty 'extreme' accent to my American ears and you only hear it in television and movies over here, making it seem almost fictional.

He forgot to say that before you even start talking cockney you need to have the aggressive mindset of ‘Wot you looking at?’ ‘d’ya want some.’ ‘Come on then if ya fink you’re ‘ard enuff’ . Notice how his eyes bulge when he speaks and the furtive looks left and right as if by habit to see who is around.

Although people generally do not sound like that anymore unless they put it on and often make it a big part of their personality. My grandparents talk like that naturally and so do a lot of older cockneys. Younger people not so much. 😢

A lot of similarities with the Australian accent, and we also share some of the slang too, like up the duff and missus. I guess it's because a lot of the first settlers - convicts - came from London. There used to be a lot of rhyming slang here too but these days many younger people won't understand an older person who uses rhyming slang. There is a much bigger American influence in the speech of younger people - eg. a lot of people under 25 will pronounce "r's" instead of the "schwa" sound. Saying "Better" as "beddr" instead of "bedda".
On another note, my friend from China who came to Australia to study for a couple of years didn't know that the "l" in a word like "owl" or "little" was "supposed" to be pronounced at all - she thought it was just "ow" or "littuw" because that's how it's said by a lot of people. Incidentally I actually prounounce the "l" in words like that. My friend found it hard to understand lectures because she said a lot of people "merge the words together" (and in China people are generally taught from either an American or a British RP accent - in the same way that students of Chinese are taught from a standard Beijing accent but Mandarin accents and dialects vary quite significantly throughout the country - not including other Chinese "dialects" such as Cantonese or Wu, which I would actually classify as different languages to Mandarin even though people who speak those "dialects" write using the same Standard Chinese language) but she said she found it easier to understand me because I say "t's" and "s's" at the end of words but a lot of people apparently don't.

    • @TheWondering
      @TheWondering Před 8 lety +2

All those parts of the UK that you mentioned are places in England. Therefore they are English accents. Not British.
America has many different accents and is classed as the American Language because America is classed as one country.
The welsh especially so, do not speak English, they speak welsh. Welsh is their first language , which is a completely different language to English.
You are saying is that the welsh language is British. That is completely wrong.
I suggest you listen to someone speaking Welsh.
So.....the Welsh language is guess what......Welsh. NOT British.
England Scotland And Wales are all classed as seperate Countries. Just like America and Canada.
I speak English because i was born in England.
And i definitely do not speak Welsh.
So as i just correctly pointed out.
There is no such thing as a British language.

I know many Welsh people from all parts of Wales.
Most people do speak Welsh, not English. They only speak the English language around English people.
      lol at mug.
It is you who are the mug.
Do you know what the word United means?!
It means together, have a look in the dictionary you might learn something.
You seem to not understand what a simple word like United means.
You sure need to learn what English words mean before you start an argument in English.
It is a Kingdom made up of three countries.
      And guess what...its united.
Plus where according to my logic, did i say i don`t think there is a United kingdom?
You don`t know how dumb you sound.

In fact that is correct for the younger population.
Most of the older population though speak Welsh as their main language.
