Nice Collection! I have two pairs of NS-1000M now. Hunting for a 2nd amp to drive them. Best speakers i have ever heard IMO, Heard others that are more expensive and that other people like more.. but they don't do what the Yamaha's do.

@@vintagehifilover I am outside of St Louis. I have a Yamaha C-4 preamp and M-4 Poweramp. looking for another M-4 or perhaps a M-2.. or a B-2. Not really set on a particular amp, Would like to stay in the Yamaha family. A pair of M-4 would probably look great sitting by eachother.

@johnman 334 I have two pairs NS1000M and stacked the second pair upside down on the other pair and run them on two MX830 via C60. Next to those two pairs NS700X on two MX630 via CX1000 to have some redundancy if there is defect in the future. NS1000M and NS700X are close - with more bass reserve on those NS700X. A part of this setup is first owned since 1985.

    Great test, thanks!!
NS 690 all the way for me!
I prefer the "less" loud midrange in the 690's and I think that would suit the rock and top 40 Virgin radio type stuff we listen to.

The NS-690 would be less sensitive to less then optimal amplifiers i.e. more forgiving whereas with the NS1000 it would be a lot more revealing. Btw Thanks for stopping by

I got the 690's, had them for over 30 years ! I'm thinking about upgrading to the 1000m's, because the 690's is all I could afford back then ! I remember when auditioning these speakers the 1000's did sound a little better, less boxy than the 690's. I use an equalizer and a sound-exciter to tone-down the boxiness of the 690's and to spread out the sound, so now I'm wondering if the upgrade is really necessary ?

I put a bid on a pair of NS-1000 M's and must wait until the Oct. 9th.
I should have been a bit more careful to notice what I consider such a Long wait.
Now my hands are tied until then or until I'm 'Out bid'!
I remember hearing them in a upscale Audio Store back in 77(?) and they were my choice then but too $$ for a new father.

that's pretty cool! As I'm scrolling down reading comments, I can hardly tell the difference as you switch between speakers. They all sound great! It seems like the speaker in the corner is a bit brighter than the other 2. One thing this video demonstrates like your video 2 of 2, placement will make a difference. In the second video, I can hear a distinct difference from the lighter colored speaker. Why is that I see some NS1000's with L pads and others without?

Having 3 pairs of loudspeakers, especially Acoustic Suspension ones, in the same room, dampens the bass a lot; the ones not playing's woofers, act like an out of phase damper. They ''absorb'' the bass presure.

absolutely it a difficult to do an a-b copmparison and yes too many big woofers in one room but also the 690 obviously have less authority that the bigger ones so easy to hear the are way softer and dont forget the efficiency of all these different speakers means that its realy not a good comparison unless they all 98db 1w @ 1m which i doubt and the amount of bass drivers in the room with one pair playing you will be able to feel a lot of vibrations in the speakers not playing I just got some 1977 ns-645s

The one from Japan is in pristine condition and sparingly used so its pretty close to new. I am driving them with a Yamaha P2200 and a M50 amplifier. I watched a video on rebuilding the crossovers in the 1000 and the audio from the original didn't look all that good on paper so to speak. Funny thing is that the crossovers are so large but the signal wasn't very tamed by it. They're also pretty old so maybethat was the problem..

The funny thing about this is, you can mix it up with a different cd player, amplification and so on. When this is done, you may have a change of opinion. I like the M and the 690 has always been a very good one. I have a pair of NS-1200 and many Yamaha amps, integrated's, receivers and a few Yammy cd players. With that said, I can almost assure you mixing and matching a a-1020, CR-800, Rx-z9, and M-80 , will do this due to the different dampening, distortion and build of those units. Don't even throw a cx-1000 in the mix. I cant wait to retire to do what you've done with this video. I've collected so much since 2008 to the present. Thanks for sharing the vid.

Personally I bleed Yamaha. Bought my first system in 1975. Using headphones listening to this, I personally think the 1000’s are just a bit louder or the 690’s just need a spec more volume when switching them on. Other wise the clarity seems to me, about the same. I got a Yamaha M-65 amp now and run two sets of NS-670’s and one pair of NS-690. Now comparing just my two the 670 have more base, and the 690 better mid, and a speck more highs.

@@bonaccca People who like metal music dig to have smaller bass speakers but lots of them, they are faster. Larger ones are more for techno style music becourse they are slower and therefor tend to be more boomy.
This is about car stereo systems, i dont know about how this is for home stereo systems.
Perhaps you could use more dampening material inside than it is stock to fix the boominess to you preferance.

The ones in front are made of steel and similar to JBL stands. The timber ones at the back I made them myself. I'm sure a carpenter or steel fabricator could make some for you. Not sure where you'd be able to buy it of the shelf though.

I have pioneer A9, and it sound very high. Crispy. Piano, and vocals are too high and noisy. Please help!

Look for some vintage Sansui amps, an AU-717 should work quite nicely.

Another option would be to look for a valve amplifier.

@@vintagehifilover Thanks a lot. And what do you think about CA 810 ? Is that better optuon than pioneer A9. Or amp like you have in this video?

Not familiar with that Pioneer, the Yamaha probably won't have a warm sound as the Sansui.
