This episode gets me every time. The Alzheimers analogy is affecting enough on it's own, but the use of such an amazing legacy character and all the layers of meaning fans understand are there from their knowledge of the character makes it so powerful. His mention of Spock I found not to be fan service, his fractured relationship with his son is his greatest regret. The sudden bursts of anger from the crew were similarly (in my opinion) not just to save time, but a measure of the speed with which Sarek would lose and then regain his emotional control. One of my top ten TNG episodes-and it's again entirely people talking in rooms. That's how good the writing in this show was.

It wouldn't surprise me if Bendii Syndrome were far more common than officially recorded. Most Vulcans would likely remove themselves from society and die quietly isolated rather than be witnessed losing control of their emotions. Colleagues would also hide it as seen in this episode.

    • @headrockbeats
      @headrockbeats Před měsícem

Wouldn't the side effects be highly noticeable? Not everyone has a Sakkath to help them contain it, and even Sakkath couldn't fully do so. I also don't think symptoms are so noticeable in the early stages like most diseases. And unless it's a severe outburst in a very crowded environment, only those in the closest proximity might notice.
We've seen that Vulcans are very prideful in the control of their emotions and respectful and private when it comes to others losing control. It's very much what this episode was about. Bendii Syndrome only came into light here because of Sarek's importance to the mission. I doubt anyone who knew about Sarek's condition would have risked his participation if it weren't critical.

The episodes that I think are objectively the best aren't always my favorites, and this episode is a good example. I don't have any fault to find with this episode. Everything about it is brilliant. But because the episode is so emotionally fraught, it's a difficult one for me to revisit.
To be fair, I didn't watch TOS before watching TNG. If I had, maybe I would feel differently. I can see now that there are some TOS Easter eggs in this episode that probably would have made it more fun for me had I recognized them at the time.
For example, I've always loved the way Sarek introduces Perrin as, "she who is my wife." Now that I know that he also introduced Amanda the same way, I love it even more.

At the time this episode was made, Mark Lenard and Patrick Stewart were both doing voice-overs for car commercials, Patrick for Pontiac and Mark for a more high-end line (Lexus, IIRC) and according to a contemporary fanzine they were comparing notes between takes.
    PATRICK: Yours is more prestigious.

23:47 - Great question. I don't think it's bad at all, because (having watched all of TREK to the end of DISCOVERY), my general opinion is that character reprisals are always special, but they don't always translate into great episodes. There are a LOT of characters that come back in other series, and it's always fun, but it doesn't always work. This episode is great not just because it's a TOS character, but because it's a beautifully told and powerfully performed story.

  • @ryusuei

In regards to your comment about when in Journey to Babel and Sarek's retirement, it was due to his heart issues, as even McCoy was asking "Isn't it unusual to retire at your age, after all you're only 102." But McCoy fixed his heart issue towards the end so he continued to serve as an Ambassador with the Federation.

There is arguably more than a handful of episodes this season that are on par or better than this episode. And even if you don't know who Sarek is, I think a lot of folks would enjoy or at least strongly connect with this episode. So I think having the character being combative off the bat was fine. I commented on tthe other video that it didn't necessarily have to be Spock that they are talking about. It could have been another son that Sarek had with Perrin. Son getting married 20 years before this episode, wouldn't be out of the realm of possiblity. Unfortunately, Roger Carmel (Harry Mudd) died a year before TNG even started, denying any possibility for him to come back as-is.
Fortunately, in 1992 _Star Trek: 25th Anniversary_ did have an episode ("Another Fine Mess") based around Mudd, in which the character was fully voiced by veteran voice actor Tom Wyner who did an amazing job impersonating Carmel. Sadly, they couldn't secure the rights to Carmel's likeness, so the character's face is shrouded in shadows in the close-up shots - but the character's full-body sprite generally does look and act like Mudd. In this episode he finds an ancient derelict and begins scavenging it for technology, which causes half the pirates in the sector to come after him. The Enterprise rushes to his defense, after which shenanigans ensue on board the derelict itself.

As far as us TNG fans that thought as kids that TOS was too campy and dated, even we think the Tribble episode is iconic. Also even as someone who generally prefers TNG, for me the continuity with TOS gives it a sense of legitimacy. It wouldn't be the same without it.
As far as fan service. I'm really glad that TNG does it, but also that it only does it sparingly. The new shows mostly either don''t do it, or rely way too heavily on it.

Dennis McCarthy will go on to compose some of the best emotive moments in the franchise. His action material is usually pretty stilted but when hes given rich character material he excels. He will go on to be the tv franchise's best composer after the unfortunate departure of Ron Jones. A sad result of the producers wanting to reduce the music's presence and impact to sonic wallpaper. Something that they will then slowly but thankfully relent on over the coming years of ds9 and voyager.

Spock is never mentioned of being married after Amok Time pre wedding breakoff by T'Pring.
As you know, Sarek had other children, at least Sybok (died in ST V) and might had another half Human half Vulcan child, with Perrin this time.
Perrin, in other material, still refers at Spock as her son, by her a stepmother status.
So we ultimately don't know whose son's wedding Picard is referring to.
As Vulcans are used to repress their emotions and control them, a Logical Vulcan might not be affected that much by depression, their mental disciplin would basically take over. If anything, an excess of rationality (difficult to imagine what it would look like) could be a Vulcan symptom for depression, I guess?
Sarek, subtely admited his love towards Spock at the end of ST III when the Priestess questions his wish for Refusion: "T'Lar, my logic is uncertain when my son is concerned.
Not to mention that after mindmelding with Kirk he told the capt "If you love them and respect them, you will save them" He diectly referred to LOVE.
The thing is with Vulcans, the signs are there, they are just very subtle to take if you are not used to Vulcan etiquette and mannerisms. Despite the constant repression of their emotions, if you know Vulcans, you can tell apart a Vulcan jerk from a more sympathetic Vulcan.
There are arrogant and a-hole Vulcans, just the same as humans. It all depends if they wish to actually read the room or not when they interact with humans.
Their stoïc behaviour wouldn't disturb me as much as it disturbs McCoy, at least as long as they are not behaving as arrogant hypocrits...
