    You mentioned it, but frankly glossed over it...Milbury traded Ziggy Palffy - an NHL star in his mid-20s and entering his prime (87, 90, 87, and 50 points in 50 games the previous four seasons along with 43, 48, 45, and 22 goals during the middle of the dead puck era) for Olli Jokinen, who just wrapped up his first year in the league with LA and scoring 9 goals and 21 points in 66 games. Jokinen would end up with 21 points in 82 games for the Isles before being traded to FL and putting up 16, 29, and 65 points over the next few full seasons. Pallfy, would go on and consistently put up at least a point per game throughout the rest of his career. In fact, at the time of his retirement halfway through 2005-20006, he was leading the league in points playing for the Pens with Lemieux and the NHL's rookie prodigious son.

  • @samuraijim9243
    @samuraijim9243 Před 2 lety +3

    On a scoring challenged team you send Palffy to the minors after he scores 2 goals in the opener? Draft a goalie #1 after drafting a goalie with the #3 pick you know you can only play one goalie at a time! The Linden trade was one of the worst all time only eclipsed by getting Yashin for hall of famers Spezza and Chara. When Wang took ownership they extended Milbury's contract, prior to that I think Milbury was actively killing the team assuming he would not be renewed. Drafting JP Dumont then refusing to play him. Jokinen's development was a real kick in the groin.

  • @nintendofan50

I was around 12 or 13 at the time and even then I knew it was a stupid, shortsighted trade. Has Berard never gotten that eye injury I think he could of really been something special. He had loads of upside when they traded him away.

  • @charliem9831
    @charliem9831 Před 2 lety +4

    Not a fan of Mike Milbury but the Rick DiPietro deal is not his fault, that was ownership pushing for that deal that term. Mike was actually not the GM at the time, he was still with the organization. Neil Smith was the GM but it was Charles Wong pushing for this deal that lead to Neil Smith leaving/fired. The deal was ultimately done between Wong and Ricks agent.
    Also one other key factor working against Milbury was the ownership before Charles Wong had him working under a ridiculously low budget. I think SOME trades were made for Financial reasons.

    Isles fan here... to be fair to Millbury, he had an eye for good players. If he had just not made a couple of those trades and taken the concensus #1 ranked player (Danny Heatley) in 2000 they would have had a disgusting team by 03-04.
    They could have had a top 4 of Chara, Berrard, Brewer and McCabe. Luongo in net. And the likes of Palffy, Bertuzzi, Spezza, Heatley, Czerkawski, Dumont up front.

    I'm not defending Milbury but you have to put it into context. They were a bad team with horrible ownership and a dilapidated arena. No wanted to play for them. The Bertuzzi trade ended up being a bust but he was putting in no effort and asked to be traded. Milbury was forced to trade Palffy over money issues. He also acquired Czerkawski, who had a couple 30 goals seasons for nothing. Same with Adrian Aucoin was a top 4 dman for years and Jason Blake who became a 40 goal scorer. Yes, he traded away Chara, but he also drafted Chara. The Luongo deal, I have no idea what he was thinking with that. The Yashin and Dipetro deals were Wangs idea, not his.

    8:30 I hate how people use the term bust for DiPietro. If it wasn’t for injuries the guy would’ve been a pretty solid goaltender, especially if he was on a decent team. A bust is more like a player who was given many chances and failed to flourish at all. DiPietro didn’t have those chances. When he played healthy he was good but he wasn’t healthy. Was he worth the top pick? No, but he still should’ve been a top 10 pick in that draft for the time.
