I decided to compare my DF64 and X54 coffee grinders and see how they stack up to each other for espresso. Even though the burr size is different in these grinders they have a very similar style burr so I though it would make for a good comparison! Let me know your thoughts 😊
This is a great video i have been contemplating getting an x54 or a df64 or higher thanks for the comparison. But.. i drink only medium roast so i think the x 54 but the price point on the df64 is unbeatable. Hmmmmmm i cannot make up my mind 😅😅😅 i have an opus right now but want a espresso only and pour over only.
Loved the comparison Aaron 👌thanks for the tag
Thanks!
love the video, really interesting comparison and thoughts on this man!
Thanks man!
Great video! I’m a new fan!
Thank you!
Would love to see a comparison on opus/ode, although the burrs are obviously different I think it'd be interesting to see!
I’m planning on that! My Opus video will be live Tuesday 😝
Would be interesting to see a value comparison between the X54 vs Ode/Opus combo.
That’s not a bad idea, I’ll try to think of a way to do that!
Both are good platforms,
64 is a platform that is like a playground, there’s burrs-galore.
54mm has the Baratza ceramics, chocolatey thick shots, ditting54 which are known to be high clarity but not as extreme as SSP64MP, and then the special steel x54 burrs that seem to sit in the middle of those two.
I’m currently using a Vario with the ditting 64 steel burrs, and in really liking them for filter and spro.
Would you try the ditting 54 in the x54 to see if you like that combo?
Thanks for your comment Braxton, you always have good info! I am planning on eventually getting some burrs for the X54 to play around with it 😊
Did the Version 4 of the DF64 fix any of the clumping issues? Also, which version of the SSP burrs would you recommend (looks like you can choose from 4 different ones on the espresso outlet site)?
I actually pulled the declumper out of mine cause I always WDT and RDT and it seems to help with retention and keeps the chute cleaner. Also I have not noticed any major clumping issues with the declumper pulled out. As for the burrs it just depends on what you’re looking to get out of the coffee. Are you trying to decide between 2 or not sure about any of them?
@@coffeenerdaaron thanks so much for the reply, I appreciate it. I just pulled the trigger and bought the new DF64 and after chatting with Joe at espresso outlet, I went with the SSP high uniformity burrs. Can’t wait to get this grinder and start using it with my Profitec Go machine. What a great way to start the day 😀
@@Runnerdude84 awesome! Congratulations 😊☕️👍
@@Runnerdude84 how is your experience so far with the DF64+SSP high uniformity burrs?
Workflow/ ease of use wise, now that you've spent time with the DF64 gen 2, would you still go with the x54? Or do the updates bring these much closer? I was nearly ready to buy a DF64 gen 2, until I realized I hadn't even considered the x54.
Can I ask which one u ended up getting? I’m deciding between the two as well
@@sunapasuwanpakdee1183 I ended up getting a df64 gen 2, and I've been very happy with it to far. In the end, I decided I wanted a single dose grinder for the ease of switching beans and switching between espresso and pour-over without waste. Workflow wise it's been nice to use, especially since the ionizer works well to reduce static.
What about Mahlkonig x54 vs df64 gen2? I’m deciding between the two and keep going back and forth
I am exactly considering both atm. did you decide on a grinder and why?
Could you consider a side by side between Fellow ODE Gen 2 with MP SSP and DF 64 with or without MP burrs I have a niche and a comandante.... But I am struggling to decide what should be a better option... Please let me know your thoughts
I can speak to this because I went through the same considerations and ended up with both. I would get the DF64 for the step less adjustment and the ability to grind for espresso. On the other hand, if you want a dedicated filter grinder, the Fellow Ode is a fabulous choice and much quieter with the MP burrs than the DF64. I will say that if you’re coming from a conical to MP burrs, it’s an entirely different style of coffee, with a very thin body. It’s not necessarily an upgrade to me, but a very different take on what coffee can be. I would therefore consider starting with the Ode Gen 2 burrs. They represent a great middle ground.
I was basically going to say the same thing as Samuel Chalekian, I have compared and had SSP MP in the Ode but not in the DF64. The MP are fantastic burrs for clarity in both filter and espresso but they are an entirely different experience to conical burrs. There is going to be less body and texture. I’ve actually been using the KINgrinder K6 for espresso and really enjoying the slow speed conical grind. For filter I have been really enjoying the Gen 2 Ode, it has good enough clarity and more body than the SSP MP, like Samuel said they are a great middle ground burr, but if you’re looking for 1 grinder for both filter and espresso you’re going to have to sacrifice something. Most “all around” grinders are good but not great at both things. Typically the RPM of the motor is too high for filter grinding, at higher speed the burrs create more fines, especially with coated burrs. You could buy a grinder with variable RPM but they tend to get expensive so it just depends on what you want. I will tell you from my experience with the MP burrs I love the clarity but I’m not a fan of the thinner body, so I’d rather give up a little clarity to have more body which is why I like the Gen 2 burrs.
@@samuelchalekian4966 Thanks, as I see the Fellow ODE looks like a pretty similar workflow as Niche in terms of "easy to use", I get easier the notes with pour-overs, so starting there would be a great idea, thanks.
@@coffeenerdaaron Thanks nice to get your feedback, from conical I like the "juiceness" I just want to get more "clarity"... lot of people told me that "flat burr" is the way, so maybe would be more than enough to stay with the gen 2 burrs, thanks
@@coffeenerdaaron and taking advantage from your response, I will be fine to get another grinder only for espresso the DF64 looks good, but the declumper issue and static makes me think about it, do you suggest a flat burr grinder for espresso only? mahlkhonig looks cool but way too expensive I think... any thoughts? thanks for your response :)
