Raymonde or the Vertical Escape
Directed by Sarah Van Den Boom
www.papy3d.com/html/en/films/...
"After playing to film festival crowds worldwide through 2018 and 2019, Sarah Van Den Boom’s hugely impressive stop-motion short Raymonde ou l’évasion verticale (Raymonde or the Vertical Escape) arrived online earlier in 2020, for internet audiences to share in its wonder. A technically impressive piece filled with relatable anthropomorphised animal characters, brought to life via detailed puppets, this is a story that shows it is never too late to change your life and live differently.
Opening with peaceful tracking shots of landscapes silhouetted by the freshly risen sun, Raymonde or the Vertical Escape’s calming beginning is soon punctured by the cries of a fleeing postman (or in this case postdog) as he runs from the titular Raymonde’s home. The reasons for his escape only becomes clear later, as we learn more about the 60yr-old Owl-woman at the centre Van Den Boom’s short, and her lonely existence.
Describing her film as one about “desire in the broad sense”, Van Den Boom explains (in the film’s press kit) that her character is searching for “a form of transcendence that would make her see the world from above and taste a kind of passion to which all her soul aspires”. Essentially a tale of self-discovery, Raymonde is looking back at her life and wondering if she made the right choices - as her impulses are telling her something quite different.
Over the film’s 17-minute duration, Van Den Boom immerses you in Raymonde’s world - both the physical one in which she exists and the confused headspace where her thoughts dwell. It’s a sombre, melancholy viewing experience, tinged with humour, but like many solemn storylines it ends with a positive note. A ray of hope breaking through the thick clouds of despair.' - S/W Curator Rob Munday

@Eden Madden thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
She thought she's a hen. But you're an owl and you can fly high into the sky. Stop limiting yourself. Get out of your comfort zone. Great film! Kudos!
She didn’t think she was a hen. When she calls herself « ma poule », it’s simply a French endearment. But yes, at some point she had to escape the narrow social constraints of the village and listen to her true nature.
hate to break it to ya, but she fell and died. it shows her being covered by the ground.
I love how calmly Raymonde addresses how some random tiny lady is touching herself on the cheese. Just, zero hoots given.
When you are 60, you give zero hoots about such topics in general... Actually, the zero hoots attitude sets in much earlier.
16 minutes for stop motion.. I can only imagine at how long it took 🙏🏽🙏🏽 excellent work
This film possesses an insane level of animation. This is sublime. The writing, the nuances of light and shadow, superb attention to fine details and cinematography are incredible. This sets the bar high. I wish you the best in all your future endeavors.
So good that you forget about it being stop motion because it goes so smooth! And you get sucked in to the story, feeling her emotions and wanting her to find peace and answers. Wow! 👍🏼😁
How interesting the duality, the dichotomy, that they present in this video between virtue and sin... reflected in the two portrait paintings on the wall, as with the protagonist who seems to be the typical old lady obsessed with dogmas in her behavior of the Catholic religion but does jobs sending fake used panties. I think I understand that part of the animated short is about how we all have these two aspects and that no one is able to completely get rid of one of the two. She also talks about loneliness, that part is the one that moved me the most. This is a sad story.
Anyway, I don't know how much internal coherence the story has. Why are there photos and paintings of humans if the world seems to be inhabited by anthropomorphic animals? Are humans in that world fantasy or mythological creatures?
perhaps the animal aspects are representative of their spirit, their "living" spirit only visible in life, while the human pictures and figments are human because they are not alive, and so cannot display their spirit/animal qualities? you can think of it as everyone being human factually, but there's a lense that shows characteristics of the local townspeople.
Those two portraits actually emphasise your point of duality of pleasure and virtue, since the right portrait is of Elisabeth Báthory, a Hungarian noblewoman, who's legend suggest was a licentious murderess, who've also been accused to bath in blood as it'd keep her young.
As the other portrait is Teresa of Ávila, a nun in Spain, who was praised as a spiritual reformer of her church, approaching a more silent, meditative form of worship.
The animation is so smooth i forget it's stop-motion!
Wait till you see stop motion with AI interpolated frames...
J'adore !
I became immersed in the wonderment of the story and saddened when it ended...
This was one of the best shorts I've seen in years. Absolutely stunning work. Every element (visuals, story, music, sound, voice acting) worked together so cohesively. Bravo bravo bravo.
The craft in this film is unbelievable!
Genuinely obsessed with this. It’s magical and down to earth in all the right ways.
For those devout Christians out there..
Even in this secular piece there are spiritual insights which might probably be unintended.
We often fall into contradictory actions while practicing our faith. Here, indeed she has acknowledged that she is a virgin because no one wanted her. She sought to religion to accept her void to accept her reality which she yearns to change. She celebrates her virginity as a façade for purity while she is also caught in an adulterous career for her livelihood.
The two extremes of her psyche is portrayed by little spirits of the nun and the sexually explicit woman. Her daily life based on her career choices, puts her into further desperation of what she is missing in her life. Although seen as a devout Christian, she also practices pagan rituals..
This being is caught between two worlds and ends up with nothing but hopelessness. Be hot or cold, but never lukewarm for you'd certainly lose your soul.
But the solution is to escape both worlds, and be yourself, and not to enslave yourself in one of them according to other people's expectations. And that's the moral of the story.
It’s small, and years ago, but I’m compelled to comment…I don’t get that no one wanted her throughout her history - but that she made a choice to “save herself”, leading to a life that put her on the outskirts of social construct. She never learned how to approach/cross that threshold and became desperate.
I agree that Madonna/wh*re archetype is in stark relief.
So many details in film I was amazed all the time. I liked the transformation of the hen-owl and the whole process. I'm speachless.
All the other animals were farm animals and domesticated but she was not she was an owl and didn't know it. She tread to be trammed but she wasn't. Her nightly forays into the night and forest was her true nature and then in the morning she would have to rush off and repent. There was a crow at the end that was listen to the calls herself but she is not domesticated either and she is lonely as well.
The movie is simply beautiful!! And again, it's fantastic how someone interprets the story in the comments, it says a lot about people. I think the film tells us to discover where you belong and then you won't feel lonely. In the end, the owl woman notices it.Because we are also diverse, people. I am glad that I could see this demanding animation.
Stunningly cool! So much intricate detail, so many layers of meaning. Definitely helps to watch it a couple of times, and to know a little about Teresa of Ávila and Elizabeth Báthory. Angel and devil, good and evil. No need to go to the extremes, just be true to your nature and be happy.😊🦉🌙
I feel bad when the owl cried on the table:(
Or did she realize that I cannot wait for someone to find ME, I need to look for THEM??
Stalking is illegal ☝️ just letting you know 😂
This is such a beautiful stop-motion film, almost brought me to tears with its story and details! But I couln't quite understand the ending, hope someone can explain or share their thoughts, thank you!
my interpretation is that she finally let loose completely in order to feel alive, but she then fell to her death. the trees while "flying" looked like they changed into dirt, so perhaps she "flew" after the branches gave out, until she hit the ground and was buried. the phantoms appearing for the raven lady could be her suddenly longing to call like that, and she will go through a similar experience of conflicted emotions, though it may end differently for her.
@@FantasyAddict95 , i agree. The plants turning to soil seemed to indicate her death, and the nymphetts appearing on the raven lady would seem to show they no longer have their original mistress to be with and had to move on.
Maybe...
@@FantasyAddict95 Sorry I only just saw your reply now, thank you for your interpretation!

Enjoying this one. Beautifully made. Surreal and whimsical. Love the anthropomorphism - my favourite the pig laughing in the bar
This is such a masterpiece! ❤

Stay ’safe’, everyone! Blessed be~🌜

When I was a child, (late '60's-early '70's) CBC had a "Children's Cinema" program that included stop motion animation, and real animals (like "Creature Comforts")🤔... I'm sorry I can't think of the name rn; I LOVED it❣️ Have a LOVELY WEEKEND!🌹 @@kathyflorcruz552
Great animation, with a great quirky story!
Very touching and funny, I loved this film!

@@manglegamer6496 es una historia cruel!
I’m surprised I haven’t seen comment on the non-saint bathing in (sacrificial?) blood. The madonna/wh*re archetypes are blended in our protagonist but separated between the figures, mirrored in the corvid’s experience at the end. I love the dimensionality added to the crone figure. And the artistry is sublime.
God where do I start to get to this level of animation? Absolutely stunning!
poor lady Raymonde😢
Sorry, I'm just confused: what happened at the end? Who was that other bird? But I still loved it! (:
This video should be +18 ! 😂🤣
What a magnificent film.
Great craft!!! What happened in the end? She jumped from tree and suicide? Why there's a crow in the end of the film?
so beautiful and sentimental
This is incredible.
Thats my Life!
I legit didn't realise this was 16 minutes long
More more more please 🥺🥺
I give a hundred hoots!!!
I guess I'm just like her, virgin and old. But I don't know what will happen in the future 'cus I'm also too dumb to understand the end
She took the plunge she found her another old owlman and took that owlcock like a pro. She's happy now and you can be too just follow ur dreams
it's so beautiful, true feelings of a lady I can totally relate. out standing short film❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
I’m confused, can anyone explain what’s going on and the story?
I love the animation, it’s sooo nice!!
I'm in the same spot, I think there could be a number of messages but what I got from it was maybe she was so set in her religious practices and following in the foot steps of it, that she forgot to live her own life. Make her own choices and the freedoms that go with that. Just a thought.
Jasmine Franco oooh that makes sense🤔
...’the vertical escape’ suggests she committed suicide at the end
@@HollerMeshocks wait what??
@@tasnimanimanimaa the trees as she was "flying" look like it morphs into dirt, the end of her brief "flight" and being buried.
I feel for Raymonde.
Estafó a virgos nipones con las pantis. Ella es una genio. xDDDD
Oh my.. I know that kind of 😭😔 loneliness
It’s very French and very lovely😢
MASTERPIECE!
I can't understand the message
old lady is alone her whole life but consoled herself and convinced herself that she was being moral and pure, but profited from the pervertedness of others, had hallucinations of the ladies (likely sinful and saintly figures) being carefree and depraved, and secretly longed to go wild herself. her attempts before were half-hearted or misguided, and only enforced her sense of loneliness. after a fit of rage and a crisis of faith, she finally gains the courage to embrace the freedom she longed for and not restrain herself.
my interpretation of the ending is that she fell instead of flew when the branches broke, but felt free and satisfied nevertheless (trees morphing into dirt could be her falling and hitting the ground, flying to the grave) and the raven lady was seen having her awakening to face a similar conflict of faith/expectations vs. reality of herself.
basic message: matters of faith and flesh are very complicated and (depending on your faith/societal/personal expectations) can be in direct conflict with each other but people often act in ways that contradict them without feeling conflicted (praying for sex, profiting by selling fake used panties, fantasies that she often represses, midnight strolls with insincere calling) but overall trying to deny/suppress an aspect of yourself only leads to bitterness, shame and regret, so you need to learn to accept what you are and find fulfillment for yourself (in a way that doesn't violate other's pursuit of finding their fulfillment.)
@@FantasyAddict95 Your explanations are really complex and wide - thank you. I'm watching awarderded short films on YT only for a couple of weeks and I'm feelling deeply connected and touched to themes in movies and also to YT comment(ator)s. ;) It's so better than Facebook.
Justtttttt simplyy WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I don't understand, so the chicken flew the coop?? What happened to her?? And who is this person at the end?? And old crow??
She was an owl... I guess in the end she became an owl rather than trying to be a "person". She realized that both of her supposedly deep desires, to be pious and to be sexually appealing, were implanted by society. In the end she chose to reject such notions and do her own thing, in line with her nature, and she literally escaped. Her "demons" then left and inhabited somebody else's mind, to cause the same sort of misery.
@@clray123 Thank you for your response! I know she is an Owl woman I was trying to be funny! LOL!! BUT, what you are saying doesn't make sense to me because the film IS all fantasy where they are different species/people. The dog/postman, the pig man at the bar...etc. An owl and a crow are natural enemies. I think that she ultimately watched her life pass her by as she maintained being a good catholic owl/woman waiting for her prince charming (whomever that may be) to come but he never did...I think she took a keep of faith and decided to spread her wings, fly and find the happiness she sought. The crow woman was just someone else entirely who occupied the empty house.
Magnificent!
The designs of the owl, dog, chicken and pig are cute. Wish I could understand what they say though. I kind of get the message, though.

Not a clue. I don't see the 'ray of hope breaking through the thick clouds of despair' like S/W Curator Rob Munday
I admit I am completely at a loss. I did pick up the two little ghosts as naughty & nice - but I felt it cut too short, and I miss the meaning of the ending.
It was mostly symbolic, her main fear was that she hadn't lived and was getting old, death would not be far off.
She went into the water and this time crossed to the other side, she was trying to follow the owl song because she realised it was calling to her. Crossing over, climbing up in the trees and taking a leap of faith, following the calling, all symbolism.
@@ianc4901 Vertical escape could also mean death. She climbs the tree and jumps to her death, no? As per the title Raymond or the Vertical Escape. She wants to be with the mailman, short of that she'd rather die. I like your interpretation, but that's how I understood it.
@@2handsdanny There were many indicators as to what was happening which was death of course, crossing over, following the call, leap of faith etc, it all points to the same thing.
Crossing over the lake = passing over or dying
Hearing and following the call of the wild = passing from this world to the next
Leap of faith = leap into oblivion - dying
Death was the next thing in her journey, she knew it all along but the story was about her not having lived and she regretted it. She was a virgin because of her faith which she regretted, she had strong desires but could not fulfill them because of her faith and she felt she had not made the most of her life.
She's got no wings
I am silent now...😔
