WATCH LIGHT SUSSEX CHICKS GROW - Hatching to 3 Months
I was given some Light Sussex Chicken eggs and didn’t have a broody hen, so I put them in the incubator.
By the time they hatched, I had Storm, the Australorp Hen and wonderful Mum, broody and ready to be a mother again.
Despite it being mid Spring when the eggs went into the incubator, we started getting temperatures of 45C (113F) so that wasn’t good for my hatch rate, as we live with nature, no air con and it’s hotter in the home.
Sadly, during this early heatwave, we lost Shadow the Australorp hen, so this is her last video appearance.
Despite the crazy Spring heat, we had 2 chicks hatch out successfully and we now get to follow their first 3 months.
So relax and watch baby chicks hatch and grow.
Happy Homesteading

Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading, I'm Elissa and here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow Muscovy Ducks and Chickens, process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit.
We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
We preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
Good health and natural living has always been a high priority for our family and despite this two family members are living with auto immune diseases, myself included.
We focus on what we can do, when we can do it, stay positive and so I make these videos for you, on my best days.
Happy backyard homesteading

Little Jordan Farm hi Tammy, I was so grateful she went broody in time, she does a way better job than me. 😂
Many blessings to you and your family 😊
Love your channel my dear.
God Bless from Canada Joe Scott
Hello Joe Scott, I’ll be sure to make a video with some sunshine inspiration, in the near future, to help you get through the last part of Winter 😊 🐣 ☀️
I am just catching up with your videos. Two super busy months. Love to see you safe from fires and life happening at your place.❤
Hello Stephanie Corporandy, it’s easy for time to get away isn’t it. I am certainly feeling very grateful to be both safe from the fires and to have clean country air again. It’s very inspiring and motivating to achieve goals again. I hope all is great for you. 😊
Great video! I ordered some Light Sussex eggs and they hatched a couple of days ago so I really appreciated seeing how they will grow and mature; thank you! I have a coop of Bielefelders and I wanted to add another coop with a different breed but with the same good personality and traits of my Bees and that's when I discovered the Light Sussex! I enjoyed seeing your attentive cat as I have one that loves watching and attending the chicks too, she is ever present with them lol! These two breeds are not common here in New Mexico and the southwest area of the U.S. and I'm hoping to share my good find with others 🙂
Thank you and congratulations on your new Sussex chicks. It is lovely having interspecies harmony on the homestead. 🐈 🐣
Oh my how special. Ty
Audrey Stewart hello Audrey, I get clucky for more, just responding to this video 😂 I hope all is well for you. 😊
Awww I love the video they are so cute
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
awesome video
Thanks so much Faisal
Great vedeo
Thank you kindly 😊
Beautiful video….hens are so amazing with their chicks….have you had any light Sussex roosters and if so are they gentle with the hens and friendly to people please?
Also was the australorp broody when you gave her the chicks and did you put them in overnight straightaway once out of the incubator?
The Australorp was broody and I put the chicks under her that night (they hatched out in the early morning and were dry when they went under her and she was a good mum prior, so I knew she was experienced)
My very favourite rooster ever, was a giant Sussex, he liked to be picked up and was lovely with my small children and other animals on the farm.
If you source a cockerel or eggs from someone with friendly birds, then the genetics help breed nice mannered birds if they’re in a friendly environment too.
Nice.. I like it
Thank you! Cheers!
I love all your videos.
Hey N K it’s always nice to see you here, thanks for watching
@@MoatCottage Oh, my name is Nathan.

@@MoatCottage I had to delete that last comment because I got a landslide of friend requests from people I don't know.
0:59 The chick pecks the eyelid of the hen! I slowed down to see what happened. The chick pecks at the hen's eye and bites down on the hens eyelid, which is why the chick is thrown when she snaps her head away. The chick is clinging to mama's eyelid! That's a patient mother hen.
That was their first introduction, the chick realized it wasnt food and behaved well after that, I agree she is a very patient mum.
Wow. Impressive
Thanks for watching 😃
Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and experience.
I am considering free range farming. There is a possibility bird will weigh 2kg in 3 months.
I enjoy your video. I also have light or lavender sussex.
Beautiful birds x
She taught them well how to sand bath to cool off.
Hello Edie Boudreau she is such a tolerant and wonderful Mum. 😊
Moat Cottage Homesteading yes she is.
Elissa this is fun to watch. Sorry they didn't all hatch. Or did they & the cat ate some? Kitty was too interested! It's good to see the mom take them under her wing & care for them. Pretty chicks!
Hello HootOwl Holler it’s so lovely to see you here! Lol Jasper was very interested, but couldn’t get in. We had 45C temperatures in Spring, when they were incubating and so we were lucky to get any hatch. I might have to start the next batch in Winter 🤔 I hope all is well with you and many blessings 😃🐣
fancy
Loved the cute over load!! 😊
Little Bean's Garden hello Zule, I hope you and your Chickens are doing well. 🐣
Hi Elissa. How are you my friend? Thanks for the chick vids. Sorry for your losses.
Hello Edie Boudreau I am doing pretty well, we are safe from fires, have clean country air and are busy harvesting and putting away a small amount of many varieties of food. Feeling inspired, motivated and grateful! I hope your recovery is going well, is it?
Moat Cottage Homesteading went to dr yesterday & I'm on track. 1 more visit on the fifth. Still very limited in what I'm allowed to do but getting there.
Edie Boudreau it’s good you’re on track. I know how frustrating limitations can be, so I’m sending prayers for healing and good spirits. 😊☀️
Moat Cottage Homesteading thank you so much for that. So much I want to be doing & not allowed. Ugh!
Don't know how I missed this one! Is one a boy and one a girl? SO sorry to hear about Shadow. I miss Cleopatra so much, she had such kind and knowing eyes. I love light Sussex, might get one next year.
I though I had a male and female for a few weeks as they developed very differently. This is the challenge of not owning the parent birds..... they probably had different parents and that's why they looked different as the grew. Once again I managed to raise 100% Males.
😉👍🐔🐓
thanks for stopping by
