I mean I can’t say sonic 4 episode 2 is particularly “great” but especially when compared to episode 1 its a pretty good game, the physics are way better and pretty faithful to genesis trilogy the graphics are way better, (my personal favorite is the recreation of sonic and tails on the tornado)

I wanted to cry during that death egg robot fight. Its not even that hard really, It takes sooooo long and that final insta death attack bs at the end is so cheap. Also i couldn't bring myself to collect all of the emeralds. I don't think i ever will. Props for that

I quit the game in the final boss. I replayed the first levels today and the physics drive me mad. I finished all the classics but this one having these horrible physics, how on earth was it released with those physics?

I really want to see a 2D game with the Advance/Battle sprites again. Those are some of my favorite in the series!

I didn't play Sonic 4 and I never will (although I would buy all parts if they released Episode 3) - all my reasons are literally in this video. Sega even regrets calling Sonic 4, well... Sonic 4. The only good thing to come out of it is Splash Hill's music and Metal Sonic's theme from Ep. 2. They used Modern Sonic in here because (at least from what I know) in S3&K Sonic's eyes turn green when in Super/Hyper form. This fact qualifies Sonic 4 for being canonically between S3&K and SA1 and explains the sudden change of all characters (Classic to Modern). That's why it isn't referenced in Mania - it doesn't happen in to Classic Sonic. This may also explain the statement from that one interview that S3&K isn't canon - it is, but only in the modern universe. In the classic universe S3&K surely isn't canon (only S3 alone and S&K alone) because in Mania Sonic's eyes are still black and as I said earlier Super/Hyper Sonic's eyes are green on the sprites.

It's interesting...(I got into it in the ep2 video) but for episode 3, before Whitehead was working on the mobile ports of 1&2 he was actually offered by SEGA to WORK ON EPISODE 3!!!! The studio that was hosting it ended up shutting down but I always wondered what would have happened if we got Ep.3... Also thats interesting about what happens with the modern/classic universe thing and the eyes. (I hate the modern/classic universe crap also hahah)

Hey, that's not true! There's also Mad Gear Act 1 and 2, plus Sky Fortress from Ep. 2. Oh and the pinch mode/Ep2 boss theme, but it's a bit too short for what it is.
This is an abysmal game. Even Sonic 06 could've been something decent if it weren't rushed horribly. This game had every intent to be so shallow and disgustingly unoriginal lump of garbage code.

People think of Sonic Colours as the start of negative elements for Sonic in the 2010s, and I agree on many fronts. However, Sonic 4 is definitely what kicked off the nostalgia pandering this series would not let go of. And considering the lack of anything in this game, it deserves all the hate it gets.
Really, if they didn't call this game Sonic the Hedgehog 4, I don't think it would have been nearly as hated. But Sega advertised it as a sequel to Sonic & Knuckles, yet it has less content and less original ideas than all five (if you separate S3 and SK) of the 16-bit entries. I played the demo on the Wii and on the PlayStation 3, and the broken physics were an immediate turn-off. It's not wrong for people to expect them to match the Mega Drive titles when all those games have superb physics, and they were coded in the early 1990s.
If you told me Sonic Advance were a sequel to Sonic & Knuckles, I'd take that over Sonic 4: Episode I.
You mentioned this point in the video as well: why split the game into episodes? The only title in the past that did it was Sonic 3, and that's because of that McDonald's deal messing with development time. And the point is furthered because nothing plot-wise in Episode II has anything to do with Episode I. Episode I has no plot other than Sonic wanting to defeat Dr Eggman.
I've heard it mentioned by other users that Sonic 4 feels like Sega's attempt to cash in on the New Super Mario Bros. series. I believe that was a factor because the timing checks out. The original DS game came out in 2006, and it became the best selling Nintendo DS title of all time. The Wii game launched in 2009, and it sold very well, too. The difference in those nostalgia trips is that they had some original ideas (Wii has 4-player co-op), added new mechanics (like Wall Jumping) that didn't hurt the established gameplay, and they're full games.

Like I can take alot of crap for games but this was one of the few games I felt like insulted as a sonic fan to play..I know I was probably late to the party but oh my god it really was that bad. if I played this in 2010 I would've been in one of those videos of a kid throwing his xbox on the ground LOL
With you bringing up the Eurogamer review, not only did they give it a 9/10 (seriously!?), with Gibson saying that this supposedly being the game we've been asking for 15 years. Its almost as if there was no 2D side scrolling games at all inbetween Adventure and Unleashed, if a 2D game was all this *cough* "professional journalist" wanted from Sonic. And it becomes even more rich when she complains about "miserable old purists," even though she spent a good bit of the review basically complaining about how 3D is terrible, and how it should never have been a thing for Sonic in the first place, as he doesn't belong there. Also with the site's review of episode 2, they said episode 1 felt better to control, as well as scoring it higher than episode 2, giving it a 6/10.... what!?
Oh yea, and the reviewer, for episode 1, also called Vanilla a slutty rabbit in the review as well.
That makes a good point about comparing this too the other 2D games which were pretty much sweet under the rug. Heck advance 1 is more worthy of the “sonic 4” label compared to this crap. It amazes me how “game journalists” like this wanted it to go back to Sonics roots yet don’t even know what constitutes “2D sonic”. Yeah I saw that about the ratings compared to E2 which is also a joke because S4E2 is by far a superior game compared to this
@@Eldarin while it may have been a different person reviewing episode 2 I don't know if its because Tails was there they knocked points off it when looking at the review, as that one of the big things Gibson was trumpeting about at the start of the episode 1 review, "finally, Sonic's stupid friends are gone!" As along with calling Vanilla slutty, they also called Vector stupid, despite him being a detective. I know opinions are a thing, and everyone's entitled to them, but I really do wonder sometimes if "journalists" are just trying to score points with the cool kids. It really does remind me of what James Hetfield said about Metallica, in an interview with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, saying about probably being the biggest target around and how people love to take shots rather than actually sitting down and trying to find something they like from whats being offered.

Because back when the Ninja Theory reboot (Devil may Cry: Devil May Cry) was coming out, gaming journalists - along with Ninja Theory themselves - were seriously going out of their way to try and bury OG Dante and the original series, claiming that fans were "entitled" and the older games were too immature compared to the new Ninja Theory game. And After Devil May Cry 5 was announced, the gaming press were throwing shade on it because it wasn't their beloved DmC2.

I realized something from this, channel pups, and cybershell's videos on Sonic 4(EP:1) and its that while dimps made this game for mobile only type game, who ever made this idea at SEGA/Sonic Team(probably Lizuka) had the developers change the name to Sonic 4 and have it released to every hardware really didn't think on what Made the Classics so great to begin with.
Sonic was way more than just simple little stories about a blue hedgehog with a 90s attitude that eats chilidogs fighting a fat silly doctor with his stupid friends and simpler gameplay(and ironically that's exactly what we got from the meta era, especially Sonic Lost World) When in reality the classics were way more than that. Japan didn't see Sonic has that, especially when you read the story manuals for Sonic 1, 2, 3&K(I wanted to put more but these are the primal example on what im about to type)
While the West simply says that Dr. Robotnik done bad, Stop him... The Japanese version on the other hand goes all in and creates lore of the islands, ancient civilization, Gods, the worlds building around Sonic, the importance of the Chaos Emeralds since Sonic 1 and so on.
Not to mention having proper physics and momentum as well as added challenges and actual secret paths.
And honestly this is the reason why we get games like we do nowadays... Because of people acceptance of mediocrity nonsense
After hearing the articles through these videos, I realized Something... That all these claims of Sonic back in the day were said mainly by Those outside the Sonic spectrum. While there are some fans that have that same mindset, it seems that only those who are critics or average gamers see sonic as Mario than what they character actually is and what he represents.
Heck Japanese(Original) Sonic is different from American Sonic(except in the dark age) yet this is the version most people view him as(mainly from the 90s).

I used to have that mindset not too long ago and realize that wasn’t the way to be a Sonic fan.
I used to dumb down on Sonic, meaning I prefer simpler stories, gameplay but really that was (in a less insulting way) “not the right mindset”.
Sonic stories can work just need good writing and faithfulness to the characters personality that’s it.
Mario has a lot move-sets and such and that was Super Mario World the first to do that (I think correct me) so I don’t see why Sonic shouldn’t have a lot of move-sets.
I made a list of how to improve the gaming side of the Sonic franchise btw in a comment so yee it’ll be in the update video.

TIL that Sonic 4 was originally developed as a Mobile game that was repurchased for consoles. The gyroscope function of the mobile game explains so much of the level design now.

Anyways, great review. I agree with most if not, all of what you said. Episode 1 is an absolute disappointment in my opinion. If they actually went and made this follow up to the classic games properly while being original, it would have been better.

I know that this man is being very serious and very genuine with his raw rage when talking about this game and I honestly can't blame him as a long-time die-hard loyal Sonic fan myself I completely understand but holy shit I can't stop laughing!
I remember the hype for this game before it release, and then how it fell apart when the game was shown and it looked so bad. Very surprisingly too, considering Dimps's track record at that point in time, since the Sonic handheld games were quite decent (at least the ones I've played).
As for the physics, yeah, it's awful. I don't know how anybody in development could test play that and approve it. Although the same could be said for the 2D section in Sonic Generations, which again, completely messed up on the building of momentum. It wasn't until Sonic Mania, which practically copied over the classic physics, that a 2D Sonic game finally felt good to play again.
Also, lol at those "professional" game ratings.
I was away from the fanbase when this game was releasing but some of the most interesting parts of making this video was reading the comments leading up to release..it was hopeful and as more info slowly got leaked it just got sadder and sadder to read. I 100% agree about Generations 2D sections, they're awful mechanic wise, the level set pieces are pretty and cool though so I'll give it that. I wonder if they ever bring back "classic" sonic to 3D (god forbid) how hard it would be to translate the Genesis mechanics over to the modern 2D realm and stop putting a spin on it like having the spindash launch you across the stage. Advance 1 and 3 are pretty good and have great physics (especially 3 with its awesome teams) , 2 is ok but too linear and screencrunched with shitty bosses, rush and rush adventure are good but flawed, colors ds is better than the wii version in level design

As much as I’m really not a fan of ‘Mega Man 9 & 10’, I can easily say that those games are light-years ahead of representing its respective franchise’s roots than ‘Sonic 4/ Sonic The Portable’ could ever pull off.
I’m honestly so glad the strange era of corporate-produced faux-retro styled games has been over for years now, and fans who know the titles they grew up with like the back of their hands are making it big from their own projects inspired from what they love (Freedom Planet, Celeste, Shovel Knight, Sonic Mania etc.) while also providing their own identities and strengths to distinguish themselves from their inspirations.

I 100% agree I’m also happy this souless era has somewhat passed (or it’s easier to spot idk) as a game like this in my opinion is a complete insult to their respective fanbases just trying to milk money out of people and i know for a fact that if I bought this for $20-25 when it first came out I would’ve FREAKED!

this games title was unacceptable, why did they have to make a shitty version of the classic games, when instead they could've just made a rush styled game for mobile, i womder what reason it is "NOSTALGIA", episode 2 is way better tho, the only thing i can commemorate episode 1 for tho, is the fact that it's level aren't, short asf like forces, whether that's a good or bad thing tho is up for debate and honestly, this was just wasted development, when they could've just focused more on generations 3DS or Colours DS, adding more levels, or maybe tapping into some "NOSTALGIA" that hasn't been tapped into yet, more sonic handheld era levels for Generations 3DS, you can also tell this game is just lazy ASF when the title screen is a near still image of the front cover, Fuck ME, if sonic games had an expiry date like food this would literally be sonic 1 1000 years past it's expiry date, i remember when my mum bought me this game for her new at the time IPHONE 4 back in 2010, i actually sort of don't mind this game too much, as a six year old then, i couldn't really see it problems mostly, so i had fun with it, using gyroscope on her iphone was cool to me back then, so i had fun with the game, Jun Senoue and Tee lopes Remix of Splash hill is amazing tho, even with how poorly made this game is, i absolutely despise games, that get advertised and shown off as just as good as their predecessor and their so short off greatness or being decent, (FORCES), so in a way i sorta find this game, because it isn't a shitty version of my Favourite sonic game (sonic Generations)

Sonic 4 sucks more than u think
1. In the 90s sonic's songs were really popular but the songs in sonic 4's songs are really bad they successfully failed at seeing what made 90's sonic songs good
2. The level designing is terrible there are boosters every single place the speed doesn't feel any rewarding
3.the physics are broken it feels nothing you just have to spam the homming attack to win there it doesn't feel any rewarding
4.cutseans are stupid the animations suck on them therebwas no need for cutseans in the game they could atleast added bubble text but no its the cheapest sonic game you will see
100% with ya dude! I will say though that S4's OST is mainly bad due to the over use of synth to emulate the Genesis games, in my opinion, its actually quite good when instruments are used! I kind of feel like the level of rage here might be just a teeny bit irrational. haha But as someone who grew up with the Sonic games on Sega Genesis (I actually grew up in the NES era, but when the next gen consoles came out, our parents got us a Sega Genesis instead of a Super Nintendo. So I missed out on Super Mario World, which I've since played, but transitioned from old school Mario to Sonic 1, 2, and 3&K). As someone who grew up on these Sonic games and loved them, I've always believed Sonic is, in essence, a 2D platformer. The whole concept of Sonic just doesn't work in 3D. So when they announced a true Sonic 4 that was supposed to be a directly sequel of 3&K, I was exceedingly happy, only to have my heart broken when I finally bought the game and experienced how terrible it was. Sonic deserved much better.
I will say that I do prefer the Death Egg Robot design in this game

Tbh if this had stayed as the mobile game it was conceived as we all wouldn't be so hard on it. Because it really feels like it, everything makes sense with that in mind, the reused zones, the weird physics, having no story, and Sonic only. It's a mobile game that Sega demand to change the title of to get more money, and that's it's biggest sin, it would be a fine entertaining mobile game otherwise.
Honestly if it stayed on consoles but wasnt called sonic 4 it still wouldve been berated because mobile games are held at a much lower standard for quality

In a way this game feels worse than other sonic games that technically are worse overall. Dimps could've done a lot better and they had in the past. The advance games and the rush games for example
Amazing how a simple name change can make people so hateful towards a game. I bet if they kept the name Sonic The Portable everyone in the fandom would be like "Hey? Remember that clunky Sonic game Sega released on mobile phones around 2010? Weird, right?" I'm not saying that Sonic 4 is a good game. I'm saying that everyone acts like it was created to be a sequel to the classic games when in reality they only decided to change just the name a literal year before the game was released.

@@vegetafan9922 While I do understand why Sega made that very dumb decision of having a mobile phone game disguised as a sequel to the classics and making it episodic, since around that time Sonic was a complete joke to the general public because of the Dark Age games like Shadow and Sonic 06 ruining the brands reputation. But COME ON ON SEGA why can't you leave it as just a mobile phone game??? you don't have to executive meddle with it. Plus the fact that Sonic Colors came along THE FOLLOWING MONTH and that game saved the brands reputation... at least for a while at the time, making the ENTIRE Sonic 4 Saga Absolutely POINTLESS and a huge waste of time and maybe even money.
That's the point. If it wasn't *given* the title "Sonic 4", it wouldn't be hated as much. Keyword: Given. Titles that call themselves sequels to a successful game has to be *earned,* not given!

Sonic 4 was a gross marketing stunt that took total advantage of the fans and it deserves everything it gets, this was a fantastically cathartic video and I agree with it 100%. Sonic 4 is actually one of my least favorite games in the series alongside Lost World and Forces, just because of what it represents. They all share similar aggravating traits: lazy development, obvious shame of the brands true identity, a complete misunderstanding of the point of the series, complete disregard of actual fans, and just gratuitous, pathetic, distastefully recycled nostalgia whoring. About as shallow as you can make a Sonic game. 06 even is above all of them for me which is pretty shocking. Of course, this is exactly what modern game journalists like IGN and people like Egoraptor want the series to be evidently, with the real fans left completely discarded and only occasionally milked for nostalgia bucks. soniks stoopid frends am i right fellas?? baldy nosehair!! so edgy haha!! big the cat XD!!!!!

I have this weird relationship with Forces where my friends and I like it on meta-ironic level...it’s fun to laugh at. I’ll never forget because Forces/Mania being free on PS+ is what brought me back to the franchise post 2008 (not knocking those games I just got obsessed with halo) and when the “final battle” happens in forces I was laughing my head off...looks like someone’s first day in blender LOL
@@Eldarin Forces _is_ a pretty good source of amusement. Admittedly, I often find myself quoting the "none of this is good Vector, that's why it's called war!" and "DOES ANYONE BUT YOOU BELIEVE YOUR LIIEES?!" on a regular basis. On the blender thing, no joke, before the game came out some cutscenes leaked, including the one where Shadow kicks his clone away from Sonic. I 100% genuinely thought it was a fake SFM animation when I saw it so I dismissed it, not even exaggerating. When I saw it was in the final game once it came out I was absolutely flawed, laughed my ass off, they made this game in a week on crack. Anyway, love that you read the comments and stuff, can't wait for more videos!

14:16 what a coincidence because I made an idea for a fan made sonic level that’s called bottomless pit zone where sonic has to dodge falling boulders and spikes and there will be some platforming with low gravity. When you get to the fight with Eggman sonic equips a blaster and it basically becomes in Alien Shooter arcade game.

Finally someone brings up the lack of elemental shields and extra playable characters in Sonic 4. I don't know why people rarely bring those two up in a game that's after Sonic 3 & Knuckles in their reviews.
