  • WARNING - This will fix the slipping manual focus issue but you will lose Auto Focus and risk burning out the Auto Focus motor if you use it in AF!
    If you have one of these lenses, a Canon EF 70mm - 200mm f4 L IS USM, then you will know that they fail after a few years. The manual focus will seem disconected from the focussing glass inside. I bought mine secondhand from eBay and I remember it was slipping very slightly then, about three years ago. It got progressively worse since then. Now it's completely useless as a manual lens!
    So watch out if you are buying one from eBay or a second hand camera shop. But if you do happen to have one and you need it to work in MANUAL ONLY then here is a very simple fix that turns it into an even more amazing lens than before! At NO cost to you. You do have to be a little daring but here I walk you through the process of mending it and then at the end of the video I show you just how to put it back to it's previous condition.
    I paid exactly £500 for this lens. New, they're around £1,200 and to get one fixed professionaly by Canon, it would cost about £300 to £350 or as in one case un USA it's $300 for a repair. See this video which has nearly 4,000 hits from unsatisfied Canon users looking for a repair: • Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS ...
    A week ago I (Tim Hollingworth) was looking for a fix for my lens and posted just that in the comments, below the video. Thanks to "Video DSLR Tutorial" for showing us the Canon design problem and the proper steps to getting it repaired.
    Now every photographer or cameraperson with one of these Canon lenses will now be able to do their own repair, simply, cheaply and most effectively.
    You will end up with a lens that is even more useful manually as it now will have two settings. Let me explain because this is soooo awsome! if you turn the focussing ring clockwise to the right towards infinity untill it becomes stiff and difficult to turn it will now be in a special NEVER before seen, brand new mode of operation. When it's in this mode you can focus the lens swiftly and accurately between near and far, from the closest 1.2 meters all the way to infinity in just a 1/4 turn of the focussing ring!
    To put it back to it's original manual feel which is a half turn, "geared" feel, it couldn't be more simple. Just turn the focussing ring anticlockwise or to the left, from infinity towards 1.2 meters or 4 feet. Keep turning the focus ring and it will glide into the middle of a "soft" area where it will be back to normal operation. Focussing will work as usual, in that it will feel "geared" and a 1/2 turn of the ring will have a more precise feel as it will travel faster than the focussing numbers in the distance window.
    I know it sounds too good to be true (I myself was so surprised by this) but please watch the video and do the fix yourself if you don't believe me.
    Leave a comment below if you have managed this repair and let others know that it is a genuine fix and NOT a fake or scam. Here is my website blog where I have written out and posted the video on my business website.
    www.cameramanfreelance.co.uk/c...
    If you have tried the fix and you are happy that I have saved you hundreds of pounds/dollars please consider a PayPal donation as I am self employed and grateful for your kind offering. You don't have to but I'm sure you will be so happy to get this lens working again.
    www.paypal.me/TimHollingworth
    Just click the link and choose how much you think this information is worth to you and your brand new, better than before lens. Thank you for reading this far and good luck with the repair. All you will need is a small phillips screwdriver, two wooden skewers from Wetherspoons burgers and a tiny bit of courage. Dont forget that you will need the secret everyday piece of clothing that you will probably have worn, which I reveal what it is and where to out it, in the video.
    WARNING
    This will change a Canon 70mm - 200mm f4 lens from an autofocus to a NON auto-focus lens and will probably damage the focussing motor and or your camera if you attempt to use auto-focus!!!!!! I taped my auto-focus switch into the OFF position with a piece of black electrical insulation tape and I recommend that you do the same. I hold NO responsibility for YOU damaging YOUR lens as this is information only use it at your own risk.

    @avsararas Před 5 lety +8

    You need to open all the lens down to the AF motor unit and take out the USM clutch, lubricate it properly and put back for proper solution. Canon used high viscosity lubricant in the clutch section which is unable to move the focus element without any slipping. That's why they released the 2nd gen of this lens.

    • @tonskulus
      @tonskulus Před 3 lety

      Yes, true that. However, this particular lens is very difficult to disassemble down to USM unit.. there are many decentering collars to be removed etc.. thankfully most canon lenses are pretty easy to maintenance.

    • @Guoenyi
      @Guoenyi Před 2 lety

      There is no clutch… 3 rings operate on friction. There is no lubrication. Slipping likely caused by the surface getting worn smooth and lost friction. Over turning focus past limits does that slowly.

    • @The-four-o-five
      @The-four-o-five Před rokem

      @@Guoenyi Correct, this is why Canon will swap the whole USM Ass'y (if the focus barrel system is not impact damaged anyway, totally different case though). If this was just a question of lubrication, Canon service would do just that.

      Without seeing the lens it's difficult to say as they are very complicated inside. The focussing barrel doesn't really attach to anything. You can easily take off the collar as I show in the video and the barrel comes off easily. Its worth a try! Good luck... • @TimHollingworth
      @TimHollingworth  Před 6 lety

      Hi Eric please don't try this if the auto focus still works. It's only for people who don't use auto focus (like me) when filming video footage. The extra friction will damage the auto focus motor! As it is trying to also move the focussing ring when the wrist band is fitted.

    • @TimHollingworth

      @YDS Together it depends on if you only want to use it manually or autofocus. Unfortunately you can't have not with this "fix." I only ever use manual focus because I shoot video. But if you only shoot auto focus then this probably isn't for you. Thanks for your feedback, so glad it worked for your lens whether you keep it manual only or remove the band for auto.

    • @TimHollingworth
      @TimHollingworth  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi this lens also has Image Stabilisation. You may have a new version as this lens is a few years old now. There is a separate lens inside that is connected to the IS circuit and this mod is nowhere near this mechanism. So I would assume you are good to go and try it out if your manual focus is faulty. It will impede auto focus 100% so if that is NOT needed then you could go ahead with the mod. You can always reverse the mod if you follow the second part of this video. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Thanks for your comment.

      Hi the short answer is any will work. Because the Canon 80D has the smaller crop censor it will increase the zoom of any lens. Take the focal length of your lens x 1.6 equals the equivalent focal length, when you use it on your crop sensor camera. For example the 200mm lens on a crop sensor camera will have the equivalent of: 200mm x 1.6 = 320mm and the 300mm x 1.6 = 480mm. It all depends on how close you want see things.

    Telling people to use a Phillips screwdriver on the JIS screws in Japanese lenses like this is about the worst advice you can give them and will lead to even higher costs when they have to pay the shop extra $$$ to drill the stripped screw heads out on top of the needed repair.
    To anyone attempting this mod: first Google "JIS screwdriver" and save yourself a lot of heartache.

      bgohacki Thank you for your valuable information. I for one had no idea there was a different type to the Phillips. QUOTE: JIS - Japanese Industrial Standard. ... JIS looks much like a Phillips screw (and even more similar to Frearson), but is designed not to cam out and will, therefore, be damaged by a Phillips screwdriver if it is too tight. Heads are usually identifiable by a single raised dot to one side of the cross slot.

    "Fix" is an exaggeration

      It stopped working as a manual lens a couple of years ago. I added a silicone band and I could use it again, perfectly. I never used it on autofocus. To me it is a 100% fix. Maybe a more accurate term would be bodge?
