      It's always great timing no matter when it is, because it's always been, always is, and always will be how American politics works.

    I love that Ebert liked Der Bewegte Mann (Maybe Maybe Not). I grew up in Germany and there was not a lot of stuff for gay people in media. And this one was VERY light on gay stuff too, but at least it was a huge success. The more important things was that German cartoonist Ralf König, wo wrote/draw the comic the movies based on, got a lot of recognition, bc in German (and European) gay culture he is one of THE most important figures - and he released one amazingly told book after another.

    I'm surprised they gave such high praise to such a crude and crass movie as Eddie's The Nutty Professor.

      I used to work at Montgomery Ward at the mall back in the mid 90's. They put The Nutty Professor on an endless loop. We poor employees were tormented with this garbage all day.

    Jerry Lewis, allegedly playing Martin AND Lewis in the original The Nutty Professor, but really, Buddy Love is actually Jerry's persona for the Muscular Dystrophy Telethons ... and, many reported, his true persona.

    I agree mostly with Ebert about striptease the book is great and the story works in it while the movie doesn't. Part is how Demi moore plays the lead but part of it is that it took of the edginess that the book has. It is a dark comedy and the movie ia played way too light.

    Striptease - Ebert is 100% correct. Demi is simply unfunny in this film. The stripping scenes aren’t funny and sexy. Only Burt Reynolds, Ving Rhames, and Robert Patrick brought an occasional smile to my face. I remember the hype leading up to the movie’s release which was basically just about Demi’s training on the pole and her $12 million paycheck. That’s it. Whoopie!👎🏾 ⭐️1/2.
    The Nutty Professor - a rare remake that works and has a point to make. It also has plenty laughs and a big heart. Gene’s right, Professor Klump is a lovable guy. This was the first of many “comebacks” in Eddie’s now four-decade film career. With this film, hilarity ensues at almost every turn. 👍🏾 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

    The idea of Eddie Murphy in a fat suit didn't appeal to me so I've never seen The Nutty Professor. I haven't seen the original either; from the clips shown here, I kind of dig Jerry Lewis' take on Buddy Love, but I doubt I could stand more than 3 minutes of his professor before I'd want to blow my brains out. (God, does a little bit of Jerry Lewis go a long, long way.)
    I wonder if it's possible to do this movie without going completely over the top and having the professor be either grotesquely obese or autistic? I feel like a slightly more nuanced take could be more bearable while still being funny.

      what do you mean? are you saying that in hindsight of A LOT of people saying he is a really awful piece of crap. or are you saying that in a you dont find him funny way or something else?
      he was a HUGE star back in his time and had a lot of fans, the Martin and Lewis films were huge blockbusters in their day. why wouldnt some one recommend one of his films back in 96.
      for me personally i am very disappointed all the awful stories i have heard about him, and im not a fan of his humor either he is just too much. but when i was a child in the 70s i use to love watching those old Martin and Lewis films with my father.

      @lowbridge7070 Před 2 lety +3

      I would.
      In the 1970s I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery.
      Jerry Lewis movies (both with and without Dean) are among the things I watched and enjoyed. They really did a good job in helping me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had as well as provided me with much needed laughter, happiness, and joy in an otherwise joyless existence.
      It wasn't until many years later did I learn about how horrible a person Jerry was in real life. But I don't let that stop me from still watching and enjoying his movies.
      So, I say to Jerry Lewis (and Dean Martin), thank you so ever much for the many years of humor and happiness you put into my life.
