Morel Mushroom Hunting Using a Dog!

- Morel mushroom (Morchella spp.) season is upon us. I take you into the early spring woods to demonstrate how one can use a scent-trained dog to locate these choice edible wild mushrooms. The video will demonstrate the basics of getting a dog to do scent work from container searches inside to outdoor environment searches for a target odour. The end goal is for the dog to find the handler some wild edible mushrooms for the dinner table!
**Please remember when foraging for mushrooms, when in doubt about identification, throw it out. Also, DO NOT have your dog search for wild mushrooms if they have any tendency to eat things off the forest floor. This could be a FATAL MISTAKE as some mushrooms are lethal when ingested.**

What a beautiful big dog he is so good!! It looks like a beautiful day ENJOY ❤
Thanks for showing us how to do the scent training…I have the patience of a house on fire, so that would be a lesson for me too! I do play hide n seek w treats in the house 😂😊 Hugs to Royce! ❤️🐾🐾🥾🥾😎
😊👍
I think our morel season is starting to slow down. Sadly, due to my schedule, I've not had the chance to look for any. Great video!
Scent detection dogs are borderline psychotic (hyper obsessive) about doing ONE thing and doing it WELL.
I'm not taking anything away from your progress, and your dog will find some morels. But he lacks that burning desire...
I got a lab that is literally up my ssa, 24/7, watching my every move. I can't even take a #2 without him scratching at the bathroom door. He lays next to the tub while i shower.
He's at 100 mph every minute of the day and LOVES his tennis ball.
I've been working with him all winter on finding morels, and that SOB would die of exhaustion, sniffing the yard for the rehydrated morels (purchased on Amazon) I hide in the yard.
Get the right dog, and you'll be blown away at how fast they'll progress with scent detection. It will come almost naturally
Atta Boy, Royce ! Keep At It Jen. Have A Great Up Coming Week Ahead ! ATB T God Bless
Cocktail hour for Royce! Awesome training! 👍😎🇨🇦🐾🍄
Lots of treats for the best boy!
Fried up a bag yesterday. Scrumptious! Now I want more lol
Thank you for sharing! Very interesting! That’s pretty impressive Royce and Jen! What a unique video! As usual ❤️
I love the Morels! They good eatin for sure! Royce is such a good dog,he will be make a great shroom hunter!! Thanks for sharing!! ❣❤❣
Nice training! I wonder how many species you will be able to train him on. Truffles ahoy!
Very very interesting training info CJ 👍👍👍😃✌️🍄
Very interesting. Might give it a try. It is so satisfying for me to be able to tire out my dog. And, as you mentioned, it’s good to tire them out mentally as well as physically.
100% Have fun!!
Great job in training. Royce is so smart. He’s got this.
Wonderful video. Thank you 🙏
I sure miss your whippoorwill music please add that back on
Very interesting . We may be getting a Beagle or two when we move to the homestead . Rabbits and Morels . Perfect combo .
I am getting a basset hound and want to do this.
I wonder if Royce's sniffer is now a super power since his eye incident. They say that happens in humans. Your other senses make up for the loss....Teach him to sshnifff for ginsing...and or marajuana grow ops.....If you're quick Jen you could make out like a bandit...
😊
Truffles next?
I love that. I think there are pockets of them in Northern Ontario but extremely rare here. We'd have to travel.
Scouted some out at Italian Restaurant's take out section, for
$12.99 Tortufi Jimmy truffle pesto, aquired taste! ( with summer truffle, 'tuber aestvum vitt'). Surprising the basil didn't overpower the truffle flavour. .Crave more. They even sell truffle chips!
Been attempting to link the morels & chanterelles with treats with little snoodle. Point them out, then praise, treat. Often hide treats for him at his home when I leave. Will pair it up with some for now dried mushrooms for him to associate with, on next stay & make sure all are retreived.😅 Great vid on scent training! Happy Spring!
What breed is your gorgeous boy?
Thank you! He is a bouvier des flandres
