Just another thing to add: Woodwinds are actually used very commonly in big film scores (Pirates Films, Maze Runner, Wonder Woman, Prometheus, even low winds in Inception, etc) but they are used more as blending tools, and not soloistically or necessarily for ornamentation. There’s also tons of huge woodwind ensembles in Interstellar. They are a fun batch of instruments that are actually really great for layering, and for the right moments, have a really great ability to add something rich if you put them on the surface! :)
Ashton Gleckman for sure!
Their precise sound is exactly what makes them perfect as layering agents, I show examples of that in the second half of the video.
I think we give them less credit than they deserve, but once you try them and see the effect, there's no coming back.
Alex Moukala Couldn’t agree more! Keep the great content coming! :-)
The Woodwinds have always been my favorites! :) There's always something cheerful about them and when they are missing from a composition it's like someone forgot to put _the salt_ in the meal.
I guess that Beethoven or Mozart never got the memo about Woodwinds not being solo instruments and used more for blending tools, huh.
@@aiden_macleod Didn't know that Mozart or Beethoven wrote film scores.
A great way to tell if your Winds part is to long is to sing the line, and if you run out of breath, the line is too long for the instrumentalist to play. Easy Cheesy.
YESSS, that's what I requested in that one stream!! Thank you so much, Alex, oh my gosh!! Woodwinds are between my favorites in the Orchestra and I love writing for them so this will be really useful, thank you so so much!!!
John Williams and woodwinds go hand in hand, man!
I've been hunting for good orchestration tutorials and dude, yours just cuts through the haze like nothing else. Yours are the kind of succinct, pointed tutorials I'd want to make. Eloquent and abundantly informative. Thank you!
Thanks for the video Alex. They are the hardest section to write for, fact. Yet, we shouldn't be afraid and be inspired to dive deeper, learn harder, and write for such amazing instruments.
This is the best explanation on woodwinds I've seen on CZcams. Thank You!!!!!!
Thanks for this awesome video, I've been struggling with writing for woodwinds. You are right that they are not a very prominent part of today's "epic" orchestral music, but they are a very powerful tool when it comes to layering them on top of other instruments or used in softer passages.
Your music is so full. I love it.
Dude, this orchestration is incredible. And this video and your explanation (especially the part about fundamentals and harmonics) was super insightful and helpful! Thank you
You're welcome
for an example of a really high bassoon solo, check out the one at the beginning of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring
Man I learned more from this video than I have in a lot of composing videos I’ve watched ! I love the final fantasy references too lol
As always, I learned a lot. Thanks Alex :)
Honestly this is way more than just a Woodwinds tutorial in my opinion, it's phenomenal. Alex mentions something very fundamental and important around 6 minute mark, what he mentions is instrumentation register, in this example he talks about the register of woodwinds instruments but this is true for a lot of instruments. There is a lot of instruments that can reach certain octaves, notes etc but they sound more realistic on some notes than others.
This is really important to understand and this video is basically a shortcut if you pay attention.
thx you ALEX...…. i was waiting for this tutorial for a long time. thx you a lot.
Thank you Alex for your amazing tutorials! Greetings from Malaysia!
Great tutorial! Thank you Alex!
Great stuff as always. Thanks!
Dude, you're awesome! Thanks a lot for share your knowledge.
Hey what's up Alex. Thanks for all your hard work :)
Hey thanks for your tutorials man.I am a newbie to composition and your channel offers a lot of knowledge to me, and I want to share something woodwind players sometimes do play over 40 seconds. They use a technique called circular breathing to achieve that.
Great Video Alex!
Man! Thanks for that!
Thank you for this!
Yep! Anže Rozman is a very talented guy.
Another good point of reference is some thriller movies from the 90s they have a more moody soundtrack that has more winds and strings and brass is used for texture
I just found you on You tube. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very informative .
I'm a new sub :D I'm just about to try and write some woodwind parts, so came straight over :D
Thanx for sharing
Thank you.
Looking forward to Cinematic Studios Woodwinds. OT has a great solo winds program that's been around a while.
yeah! I always look up to japanese music :D I found they tend to write somewhat different than western style track even the chord progression hahaha.
Thanks for this tutorial Alex!
I think you should make a tutorial on how to compose japanese soundtrack!
I was thinking about what you were talking about the other day and was wondering what your take on Eastern Orchestral Music (specifically Japan) was, and I was also wondering if you could maybe do a tutorial on it, maybe like scoring for an Anime, J-RPG, Martial Arts Film or something.
P.S. Love your Channel it really does break down Orchestral Music so well.
Hi Alex, have you already made another tutorial on woodwinds? Because I would like to watch that :D
Thanks for another great video! Jesus Christ, Pledge of Chaos is a brilliant piece of music. I can't wait to listen to the 4-odd other hours of music from that game.
Literally one of the best orchestrations in Final Fantasy for me!
2:34 Ironically, I came here to learn more about woodwinds just because I watched a free masterclass by John Powell in the "Mixing With The Masters" site. He was breaking down also one of the tracks he made for How To Train Your Dragon 3, called "Third Date", which is the title of the masterclass as well. Btw, it has five videos between 15 and 25 minutes approximately. I recommend to everyone interested on learning some very interesting and meaningful lessons (that apply to career and to life too).
in 9:53 what is the name of the plugin you use for control expressions in the piano roll
You are cool, bro! hi from Russia
Ah yes, Green Hill Zone. Very nice touch! ;)
i like your videos and i hope you make video about your plugins in fl studio and your kontakt plugins
please
I already did: czcams.com/video/X6yNLvk8POE/video.html
Really great video! And just to mention it: your microphone has a very quiet feedback/echo after you speak.
Yes, indeed, You can hear a lot of woodwinds section in japanese orchestral composition. Here another example : Donkey Kong Country played at the symphonic games orchestra 2 : czcams.com/video/LGZtPht11pg/video.html . The woodwinds section can enrich the full song, like double some strings part, but also, they can bring a really new feeling, color, atmospher to the song. Emotional feeling like : mystery, slyness, fun, humor. But also you can create some transition effect like you did at 13:00. I think the high frequences that you are talking about is this kind of woodwinds does not create the "Overtone" that we can clearly hear with lower instrument.By the way alex, I signed up to evenant. And i just finish the course of Arn. Really intersting and helpful! Less is more!!
Hey Alex, great video and discussion on the frequencies/harmonics! Would you consider doing a review of CineWinds Core?
I did a fast review of it here around minute 30: czcams.com/video/X6yNLvk8POE/video.htmlm14s
Cool. Do you find the sound in Cinestrings is 'older' too?
Please complete tutorial of ur track Codename highwind
Any tip for preventing distortion when playing midi instruments? What can I do to make them sound real ? Thank you.
Great video. The tones that aren’t harmonics are called overtones for those who want to know.
an another amazing tutorial, is there a coupon code that you have for when we sign up to Evenant?
Hey, so I only have the volume and velocity and pitch control. How do you get that dynamics control?
Also, Does anyone use Ghosthack at all libraries? I think it’s more tailored toward EDM type stuff. Just wondering.
Hey Alex, thank you for another great video! I have a quick question for you: Do you use step input to program the ostinatos/runs in your projects?
Not really! I just do that with velocities. But I guess it could also be done that way.
I luv u
Spettacolare serie! Sto imprando tanto, e lavorando nella industry dei videogiochi amo che prendi per riferimento altri giochi :)
Mai pensato ad un'orchestrazione del main theme di Chrono Trigger? Thank you!
Non ho mai giocato a Chrono Trigger purtroppo!
@@AlexMoukala lo so...1995 :) ma grazie di tutti questi video. Sto iniziando a comporre musica orchestrale, e grazie ai tuoi video ho molte più informazioni!
Can you perform an orchestration tutorial on an MPC?
There's a library from cinesample that have woodwinds runs called hollywoodwinds, much more realistic.
hello!!
Thank you for this wonderful video. You should actually do a video on BRSO . I have watched your tutorial on that but i do not think it is complete
Iam Nobody a tutorial about what aspects of it precisely??
about how you map the expression and how you edit it in the piano roll itself. I have watched almost all of your streams and i am still trying to figure out. Plus your workflow is really fast , you should do a video on that too :)
Right click on the expression knob -> edit events in piano roll.
As for my workflow, I guess I'll make a video about my favorite shortcuts. But they're few!
thank you :)
Star Wars is the first movie series I think of with woodwinds in it
Hey Alex, a question to the evenant course: Is it as precise explained as you do it?
And does it cover everything ? Like what you need in a template and stuff?
I noticed you sometimes use the whole string essamble for chords and than layer cellos basses solo cello and 1st and 2nd violin over it
I don’t know why you should layer cellos and basses on top + solo cello
Just want to know if it‘s really in-depth since I‘m thinking to get this course for a few months now and invest in that
Thanks a lot! Always love your tutorials and your quality posts on Instagram
Greets from Germany!
Because 355 is a bit of money for me 😂🙈
For sure. I wouldn't recommend you something that's badly made or a scam.
That course is the biggest and most-full resource I know and tried for when it comes to learning about writing Modern Orchestral Music.
Arn's way of teaching is a bit different than mine since we had different backgrounds and skill levels (he's five times more talented than me) but it's still understandable and easily-relatable.
I think, if you follow both my channel and his course, and practice what we preach, then you'll get two different perspectives on the same thing which will just make you grow much faster.
Alex Moukala I know you care about your audience and never would recommend something that’s not good, thanks for that really detailed information !
I‘m using FL and he is using Cubase but I think that won‘t be a problem since I‘m seeing your videos for making a template etc. :D
Also, why do you put saxophones into the brass instead of the woodwinds?
20 min mark can you do the stretchy trick in cubase?
god damn.. is it so hard to play a sample of the full project at the start of the video xD
6:35 types of woodwinds
Dude, how do you EQ the Giant? I feel like I have to put a high-pass all the way up to 600Hz before it starts to sound clear, but loses so much of that 'giant' sound... :(
Not EQ. Only arrangement. With a good composition, the EQ is unnecessary.
how do you add markers on the timeline? and what piano do you use? I feel like I heard it before
Alt+T.
And for the piano: The Giant.
Alex Moukala oh thanks!
Thanks Alex for all the great content! But the explanation on "why higher notes cut through the mix better" is a bit hazy.
Higher sounding instruments cut through the mix better partly because of why you have explained on the video (the amount of harmonics is smaller, thus, less harmonics to clash with other instruments), but the main reason is in physics: Higher frequencies naturally have more energy stored in them, not needing to have so much amplification in order to be heard.
Fun fact, the same thing happens to light! Light of higher frequencies (or shorter wavelengths, your choosing) also has more energy associated with it (E = hf)
Hey, check out harry potter 3 film score.I think the woodwinds arrangement in there is amazing.
donny cui love those!
Especially the first two scores more than the third.
It's sad that we almost don't get that type of classical movie scores anymore.
You know there are original music sheets available for harry potter 1&2,you can study the orchestration bar by bar.Tons of info there.
That's literally the only thing that makes me regret not being able to read music.
But there's much more I feel like I should learn personally before I even tackle that.
Alex you are quite wrong about long phrases for woodwinds. You can actually play long phrases depending on how much air it requires.
Imagine lomg notes that should be played piano or mezzopiano, it can last lomger than a lomg note played fortissimo, and also you can catch breath without stopping playing, even if it is a very difficult technique, used mostly in contemporary music.
I think you would be helping many people if you only explained how you configured kontakt with all those channels .. if you can help me with something, it is making a video explaining how the hell you do that... I really need that
I already did: czcams.com/video/ekReYnYA5a0/video.html
wow I did not expect you to respond so fast ♥♥♥♥.. keep working hard master!!!
I use Clarinet mostly as a solo instrument since my best friend is a talented clarinet player. Before I met her I thought Clarinet was a very boring instrument. You can also think of woodwinds in a different non-classic way to spice up your compositions for example as we did in the beginning of this track. czcams.com/video/LqFTV2Zx2Co/video.html
Though I built the track upon recorded improvisations and learnt everything about trailer music from the evenant trailer course.
Boggles your mind that the scale run 20:48 sounds very legit and still seems impossible to perform on real instruments?
That can be "easily" achieved with two instruments playing the scale run. Playing that (19:37) in perfect sync will be totally impossible and the result will end up very close to the duet sounding scale runs. Just try layering two simple scale run and offset the key notes in the piano roll just ever so slightly. Sounds almost identical to the 20:48?
Mystery solved...
You are talking to quick....i do not understand you.
