  • Part one of three was hiked from the 29th of May to the 4th of June 2023 and covers the first 175km of the total 355km.
Being early in the hiking season, it took me through quite a lot of snow, freezingly cold nights and a few flooded areas which meant having to follow winter trails and getting wet feet more than I had hoped for.
Luckily it also meant having the trail almost completely to myself; except for in the area close to Grövelsjön, I only met six other people during these first seven days.
The vastness and beautiful views at Fulufjället Nationalpark and the old, crooked trees in Drevfjället Naturreservat were the highlights of the trip, which each day offered wonderful variation of forests, mountains, bogs, lakes and rivers.
The only monotonous stretch was the one from Flötningen to Guttudalskojan as it runs on gravel roads in forested areas.
    About Södra Kungsleden
Södra Kungsleden is the result of a non-succesful attempt to extent Kungsleden to stretch through the entire Swedish mountain range.
Hence, its name is only officially used in Dalarna, though you sporadically will see signs with its crown-symbol along the northern half of the route as well.
It is possible to stock up food in Flötningen, Ramundberget and in certain STF cabins. However, the store in Ramundberget as well as the STF cabins are only open seasonally and were closed at the time of my trip.
Information about the trail is sparse. Länsstyrelsens folder (available online) covers the part in Dalarna, while a Swedish (Lars Magnusson "Vandra i Sverige") and German (Michael Hennemann "Scweden: Kungsleden) contains information about the entire route.
Feel free to ask any questions if you are thinking about doing the trail.

Great Tour! I did this in July 2021 and it was a lot warmer. Was that a cold spring in 2023? This part was my favourite section of the tour because there are so view people.

Hi! Thank you very much for your beautiful report. In August I'm going to do Sodra Kungsleden, I have 2 weeks to do it plus one day to get there and back. Do you think that at this time I can complete this trail without any great effort or rush? it amounts to 25 km a day, which in my case is not a big amount. I plan to cover 25 - 35 km a day. I've never been to that area and I don't know what to expect. I will be grateful for your advice. Kind regards!
