Thank you for sharing this documentary, what a great job! I had been to Evergreen just prior to it's restoration. It was so very sad to see it looking like that. The small building you referred to as a crypt and now turned 'Storage' is actually an opening in to the catacombs of the Mission Inn. I have several friends who entered them via that route, but the openings have been bricked shut since the 80's. People like to say it is not, but I've watched them go in there and disappear for hours. I'm claustrophobic so I never went in. I'm glad they restored the cemetery. I spent hours walking among the tombs looking at the artistry of the carvings and the names. I never realized there was so much history there. It was nice to see the grave sites of my particular favorites. I dont get to visit it anymore now that I live in another state. Thank you

I work for the city of riverside and I often take lunch off the side of the road and walk up to the gate and just read the head stones and think wow over 100 years ago.... lots of stories underneath these head stones. Good job with the video.

Well done documentary. As soon as you mentioned the many Graves in 1917-18 I knew it was the Spanish flu. Years ago I wandered through a cemetary in Elgin IL that had a child's section. Most of the dates on the markers were 1917. I mentioned this to my grandmother, and it was she who told me about the pandemic. So sad. My grandmother was born in 1911. She was one of the lucky ones. I think this cemetary will be a future outing seeing how I live near there. I'd love to see you cover Oak Park cemetary in Claremont. My mother in law and father in law are both buried there.
Hi Rozee, thank you for taking the time to comment. Actually I was surprised to see so many graves from late 1918 to early 1919 at Riverside. Most old cemeteries have flu pandemic victims, but this one has the largest number I've seen so far. That must have been a very frightening thing to experience. I've read accounts of people who contracted the flu and survived, and they all said it was a horrible illness.
Rozee, my Grandma told me , here in what was then a small town, Roseville, Ca. that in 1918, she would run into people on the street on Monday and read about them in the obits in the paper on Friday. Very scary time

It is both ironic and topical that the last story in this documentary was on the event known as the Spanish flu of 1918/1919. I am only now viewing this piece for the first time, but I am hunkered down with the rest of Riverside and indeed the Country as we suspencefully await the passing of yet another pandemic known to us now as Covid-19!
I have walked through this cemetery many times people from the 1800 hundreds are interred there. But it has been vandalized many times in the last few years so now it is guarded occasionally. It really is a lovey peaceful place close to Fairmont Park the homes in the surrounding area are quite lovely,in the background is Mt. Rubidioux also a lovey peaceful place you used to be able to drive up to it but you have to hike,every year we have Easter Sunrise services and firework are displayed each year as well,but it has caught fire many times,I don't know of that ritual will continue,I used to watch them from my back yard.

What people DON'T KNOW IS that here in Virginia ,you can be arrested for trespassing in a cemetery or churchyard after sundown. Desecration of a grave is a CLASS SIX FELONY !! YOU WILL GO TO JAIL.
I used to joke with my sister that when I die just spread my ashes over the 91 freeway...... I spent so much time going back and forth from Riverside to the O.C.
I lived in several parts of Riverside county from 1973 to 1996. I have been to Rubidoux many times, but I did know about the existence of this Cemetary. Thank you for letting me walk with you through the pages of Riverside's history!!!

Thank God my grandmother Emilia Cruz immigrated to the US legally in 1917 so she didn't suffer from the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. A formidable women who owned the last dairy in Highland Park, a section of Los Angeles and who had two of her eight children become multi-millionaires because of the real estate boom after World War II in Southern California. I lived in Riverside during the late 1990s and I remember driving through this particular one almost everyday. At that time, no real effort at preservation had started and I am glad the the city got its act together. Oh, I was very pleased to read that this cemetery in operation at the time where segregation wasn't practiced.
Thank you for sharing your grandmother's story. She must have been formidable indeed to have owned her own business and to have raised 8 children at the same time. Bless her, and people like her, because they are such important role-models.

Seems to me I remember reading that a famous silent film star was buried here. Unfortunately I can't remember who. I bet the people buried here had no idea the area would become so sketchy a century later! Seeing the graves of the victims of the influenza is eerie, and hearing your warning just a few years before covid freaked me out a little bit! People certainly handled that epidemic with a lot more common sense than we do! Great videos! Love your narration!
I lived out here for the better part of 12 years now. Mt. Rubidoux has become my hiking trail in time. I have a cousin there, in fact he would be near Pine street section extension part of it.. Seeing these graves in it's historical nature I have a better understanding on them now, that includes the war section, I never knew anyone who fought in the South was buried there, until now. somewhere in Riverside, sorry, i forget where, i havent lived there for awhile, but its not far from Evergreen, is a very small cemetery with graves from children who lived at the Indian Training School in RIverside, in the early 1900s. -. So sad ( and an unpleasant part of riverside history ) that it wasnt considered a priority to send their bodies back to their families at the reservations they came from!

The Sherman Indian cemetery is located on Indiana Avenue in between Buchanan and Lincoln on the south-west end of Riverside. It is about eleven miles from Evergreen Cemetery.
I appreciate the Riverside community for saving this cemetery. Your research is outstanding of the departed. It is haunting for me the unknown soldiers but understandable. The harm caused to the body can cause lack of recognition but not lack that they lived.

I gotta tell you folks, I lived right next to the evergreen cemetery for a long time. I can tell you, you don’t have to worry about anything in the cemetery, those folks won’t hurt you, but the people who are still breathing you need to watch.
Today is July 16 2020 and we are in the midst of another pandemic, the Covid 19 virus. In the U.S. over 35,000 have died and thousands are infected. Yes we have forgotten the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 but its' distant relative has visited us. I remember when my dad, brother and sister visited the cemeteries of his birthplace in Morgan County Ohio. We saw many grave stones with the date 1918. Some stones marked whole families that died from the Spanish flu. Great video.
During the epilogue of the magnificent clip you made of this Riverside cemetery, I noticed the name of Irvine on one of the stones. There is another Irvine buried in the old Long Beach municipal cemetery 60 miles west of Riverside. I would think that the Irvine's would want to be buried in the city of their name sake which is Irvine, Ca. But what do I know. 😊

My family owned rental property in Riverside, including units on 14th St, just down from Evergreen. Our tenants told us crazy stories of ghosts and apparitions, which were corroborated by neighbors. Apparently, there's one ghost that does NOT. like kids cutting through the cemetery. Several people told me it's a very tall guy, with a long beard, that angrily stares at you before disappearing. Mt Rubidoux is also suppose to be haunted, as well...
Thanks so much for sharing your story. There are so many fascinating tales associated with this cemetery, it would be great to document your tenants' experiences. My approach at documenting cemeteries has never been with a thought to the supernatural, but this is one of two locations I've visited that I believe has something going on.
We sold that property some time back, but I'm guessing a few former tenants live in Riverside. I live in Oregon, so I can't talk to neighbors, but it would be interesting to hear their stories. Apparently, the bearded ghost is somewhat well known. I never lived in Riverside, so I have no first hand accounts. But the people who told these stories years ago were rational and intelligent, and had no reason to make things up...
I've would agree, except this ghost has been there for years. Doesn't mean homeless ppl couldn't have been using the cemetary for quite some time, but the ppl in the area says it's an apparition. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Lisabrrj There are a few in Riverside. There's Olivewood, which is another old one, and Crestlawn - this is where I heard that Cheri Jo was buried up until the 1980's.
Thinking that you might be hearing traffic noise, I went back to the original video clip and there is indeed sounds of traffic, but there's something else on the clip that's not a car.... I don't know what it is, but it's not a car.... very interesting....

I always wonder why cemeteries never offer headstone maintenance as a standard service included with the cost of a plot. When I look at some of the conditions of the headstones, I imagine what they would look like if the caretakers had just wiped down the headstone or/and applied some type of protective agent at least once a year, or maybe they do and that's just how they look😕.
I know what you mean... the condition of the older ones are pretty rough. I just got back from the Midwest (stay tuned) and many of the stones you can't even read because of exposure to the elements. It looks like the stones are melting. The identities of so many people are being erased by time...
Grave Explorations almost make you want to cry to think that nobody cares. It would make it a little better if the cemeteries had headstone upkeep as a standard service especially for the graves that nobody visit. That's why I go to my parents grave because I hate to think that nobody would be visiting their grave, which exactly would be the case if I didn't go.( but forest lawn in Glendale does a good job with general maintenance so at least i don't have to worry about the headstone upkeep)

Used to drive around this cemetery and look down at it from the mountain when I was stationed at March AFB 1982-90.

Thank you, as to the grave of Lucy , you said her obituary appeared in the Oregonian, isn't that an Oregon Newspaper. Wondering as she was from California. Although I know that newspaper would have maybe been available to Californians, at the time, but am just wondering. The info on the Spanish Flu, was a reminder that this could happen again. The city has done a good job in restoring and protecting this cemetery! Before 2001, it was left to neglect and decay.

My family owned rental property in Riverside, including units on 14th St, just down from Evergreen. Our tenants told us crazy stories of ghosts and apparitions, which were corroborated by neighbors. Apparently, there's one ghost that does NOT. like kids cutting through the cemetery. Several people told me it's a very tall guy, with a long beard, that angrily stares at you before disappearing. Mt Rubidoux is also suppose to be haunted, as well...
Thanks so much for sharing your story. There are so many fascinating tales associated with this cemetery, it would be great to document your tenants' experiences. My approach at documenting cemeteries has never been with a thought to the supernatural, but this is one of two locations I've visited that I believe has something going on.
We sold that property some time back, but I'm guessing a few former tenants live in Riverside. I live in Oregon, so I can't talk to neighbors, but it would be interesting to hear their stories.
Apparently, the bearded ghost is somewhat well known. I never lived in Riverside, so I have no first hand accounts. But the people who told these stories years ago were rational and intelligent, and had no reason to make things up...

I've would agree, except this ghost has been there for years. Doesn't mean homeless ppl couldn't have been using the cemetary for quite some time, but the ppl in the area says it's an apparition. 🤷♂️🤷♂️

Lisabrrj There are a few in Riverside. There's Olivewood, which is another old one, and Crestlawn - this is where I heard that Cheri Jo was buried up until the 1980's.

I always wonder why cemeteries never offer headstone maintenance as a standard service included with the cost of a plot. When I look at some of the conditions of the headstones, I imagine what they would look like if the caretakers had just wiped down the headstone or/and applied some type of protective agent at least once a year, or maybe they do and that's just how they look😕.
I know what you mean... the condition of the older ones are pretty rough. I just got back from the Midwest (stay tuned) and many of the stones you can't even read because of exposure to the elements. It looks like the stones are melting. The identities of so many people are being erased by time...
Grave Explorations almost make you want to cry to think that nobody cares. It would make it a little better if the cemeteries had headstone upkeep as a standard service especially for the graves that nobody visit. That's why I go to my parents grave because I hate to think that nobody would be visiting their grave, which exactly would be the case if I didn't go.( but forest lawn in Glendale does a good job with general maintenance so at least i don't have to worry about the headstone upkeep)
