- Nikola Jokic guided Denver Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship and was named a unanimous NBA Finals MVP while being misunderstood and disrespected in the US by former players like Gilbert Arenas & Kendrick Perkins and many other celebrities and fans.
There is more than one reason why Americans don't understand Jokic and we break down all of them in this video.

No narcissism, no trash talk, honest and humble, no scandals, married his first girlfriend ever, wears his wedding ring on his shoelace, has a child, has money but never brags, donates a ton of it to different causes behind the scenes, respects his opponents and lifts up everyone around him. Arenas is 100% correct. Most of the media won't stop over-criticizing him, the brands won't see value on his playing ( for instance, signature shoes) as the general public don't care about the Basketball IQ, about his insane performances. For them is all about the social media, the hype, the acrobatics, posterizing the defending guy or letting him on the floor with some crafty handle.

He's not talking about 'true basketball fans'
@@rockonileva Check the television ratings. The general public did care and actually watched the finals because there wasn't a huge drop off from last year's final.
It’s fashionable to bash Americans. There are many knowledgeable basketball fans in the US. Considering the game was invented on American soil and was dominated internationally by the US until more recently, it’s kind of pompous to say we do not, as a whole, appreciate nor understand the game.

From my experience, Jokic is viewed with tremendous positivity by the average American NBA viewer. It's the sports media that is completely off base with their terrible takes and continual dismissal of him.
Personally, I've had very sporadic interest in the NBA since Jordan retired. Jokic has been a breath of fresh air, especially this season where, even though he was robbed of the MVP, his championship has opened many more eyes to how exceptional he is.
I would also agree that his demeanor is one of his best attributes. I, for one, am sick of these narcissistic prima donnas that the sports world is full of. Jokic seems to be more low key version of athletes like Derek Jeter or Aaron Judge. They are professionals that carry themselves the right way.
We need more players like LeBron in the league, he brings excitement not like Joker, he's boring
Greatness never is and never was a popularity contest. Nikola's game speaks volumes.
But it is sad. You have media, at best, ignoring someone who is on the path to be one of the all time greats and is perfect role model to young generations.
@@XelNaga89 That is the OP's point. He lets his game speak for him. There is NO way you can omit Jokic from the story of the NBA--no matter how much they might want to.

Nikola Jokic is the single reason I’ve paid any attention to the NBA for the first time in 10 years. Humble, hard-working, respectful, no nonsense, and family-oriented. For every guy that watches the NBA there are atleast 6 people not watching because they find nikola boring.

If even a few kids look at Jokic as a role model (and there will be many), I think that is a good thing for society as a whole. He understands that there are negative sides to social media fame (for himself and his team), he let's his play on the court speak for himself, and he knows how to live a complete life.
I'm a Detroit guy and a fan of the Joker. I think back to the other athletes I hold in high esteem, Dave Bing, Barry Sanders, Al Kaline, Joe Dumars, Steve Yzerman and all of them had the same mind set and outward appearance as Jocik. Team, Humility, Contribute, Lead by actions, not words. Those are character traits any kid can appreciate. So can adult sports fans.
No , he is a great role model. What the guy meant , is that nobody wants to model their game like Jokic. Which is normal. But what everyone seems to forget is that he is a CENTRE! This position is not flashy in general, with a few exceptions, mostly because really big guys don't fly in the air (forget Wilt)and are not that explosive, but that's not what their job is. They need to muscle underneath the basket , get rebounds and to free the way for the attacking players( it's called shelter in my language)not sure how you say it in English, when you you block the way with your body, so the defender can't move in on your teammate. Jokic is so great, because he is the first center with the ability of a playmaker, I don't remember another one like him at least. Again, exept Wilt , who basically could do whatever he wanted, so one year he decided to try and finished with the most assists in the whole league. But Joker does it naturally, I don't argue he is probably the best player in the moment, but For me these comparisons are useless cos Joker and Morant and Curry and Lebron are completely different players with completely different jobs on the court. But I prefer watching Kyrie play , just because of his ball handling and very aesthetic skill.

Jokic might not do things that people 'want to see', but he does the things that everyone should see. He's a father that takes care of his kids and is loyal to his wife. He's a private man that prioritizes family above all else. He's a professional that would rather do the right thing than get fame or personal accolades. He's an incredibly wealthy man that gives substantial amounts of money to charities and people in his home country. He is a famous man who remains humble and self-effacing.

We need more people like him on this planet. Social media and narcissists today are a menace. I don't follow basketball, but if these rings/trophies are won based on popularity then I don't know what to say. Basically, they are worth nothing.
I’m a 35 year old New Yorker. I love me some Jokic and I appreciate his greatness. Not all Americans view him boring.

He's bringing me back to the NBA. I'm 70 haven't cared for the game since 04 Pistons. This team plays so well together. And Jokic is the key. So awesome to have a player with such talent and humility. Just really enjoyed watching the nuggets.
So you lived through the 80s and 90s with all the fights, trash talking, and Jordan declaring himself better than other players…
BUT HUMILITY 😂🤣
right, so the 80s and 90s portrayed "humility" to you.

Lived in Michigan at the time for a couple of years, that was a great fun team to watch. The Spurs of the time were another fun TEAM to watch.
@@ArnoldMejia It's these kinds of teams that bring out the real ball fans.
Nikola Jokic is wholesome. I love this dude.
I feel like Jokic saves energy not wasting time going to meetings working in his brand image.
I think it's very refreshing to have a superstar not care at all about social media and self-promotion. He does all his work on the court. Just straight up woops your ass and doesn't have much to say about it. He reminds me of a lot big name hockey players. Most of them don't talk about themselves at all. It's about the team and winning and that's it. Love it.
This is not refreshing tbh since i was watching nba since back then where no social media but ym and friendster only.. that’s why i like nikola
Kawhi is like that
"He is not the superstar the kids want to see..." No but he is perfect superstar that can act normal and doesnt get affected by the people around him. Being humble, doesnt want social media etc... He is the guy that those kids need
he's not the superstar the kids want to see. he's the superstar the kids should see .... since he's an actual proper role model.
Kids don’t look at BIG guy. Because they can’t relate. Kids will rather see Curry, Kyrie. Is all about the height. Small players who are good tend to have more impact with kids than BIG guy.
@@groundtrader173I don’t think it’s about height, rather most children prefer seeing more “exciting” players. Kyrie and Steph being 2 examples.
@@groundtrader173 kids want to see fully edited mixtapes of 3s , layups and dunks rather than a pure fundamental player

Basketball is like any sport, played in many ways, in this aspect we have to enjoy it in our own way.
Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
It's very common in the game of basketball. Trash-talks, discouragements, dirty fingers, etc. The Serbians are very proud of what Jokic achieved now.
People who truly know basketball appreciate

First, we are in a world of many falsehoods, everything is promotion, speculation and everything contrary to God or the Supreme or Jehovah, but to teach humanity a lesson, the Supreme gives tasks to people who do not know why they choose what they do if it is not their priority. They appear with characteristics completely contrary to the usual direction of this Humanity. But we remain blind even with his Triumphs. Thank you Jokic.
They also appreciate women’s hoops for keeping their fundamentals alive, too.
He is what every KID SHOULD Follow. HARD WORK Will make you successful. Not running your mouth will make everybody like you. Family 1st. So much respect for him.
The thing is, Giannis did the EXACT SAME THING just two years ago, and some of you weren't as effusive with your praise for him. Just as humble, just as about team...stuck it out in a place that hadn't sniffed real success in decades before he arrived...why isn't/wasn't he the model of 'hard work'? Is that only possible with white athletes?
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 isn't it obvious? Giannis is freaking black, most Greek people don't even claim him, they only give him a pass because he's an NBA star😂

also, looking at basketball skills, jokic is just better. Its nice that Giannis dunks and is fast, but he cant shoot and his passing isnt really great. Jokic is just an overall better player and he developed into this. Giannis plays the same way since 2018, and still didnt learn to shoot the ball.

That player is the example of a great role model for any kid in the world.
Jokic is this era Tim Duncan, all they want to do is play basketball and win, then after that go home or "I just wanna go home"...
I love his attitude and how he's ridiculously HUMBLE...
CONGRATS CHAMP!!!

Those were great Spurs teams to watch, maybe because I just hadn't been watching or they haven't had enough time in the limelight that I don't know who the Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker of this team are. They gave a lot of personality to those teams despite Duncan's quiet demeanor.
Great comparison
He is respectful and kind. He was raised well. He is humble and a good father and husband. He loves horses. Something people aren't used to in the NBA. He is bringing the old game of basketball back. I admire him for his love of his team and family. He is just a humble man.plain and simple. Love him.
He was raised better than some nba players who lived here unlike him who grew up in a war torn country which is made, his mom must be very proud that he raised a humble kid from the ravages of what her country has gone thru
He sets an example for everyone in everything.
Jokic made me start watching ball again because of his humbleness (and skill too ofc)
The reason why Jokic is not getting the respect that he deserves is simply because he puts winning over entertainment. He isn't out there to make a show, he is there to win and just that. He is what an athlete should be.
But his fanbase are entertained, and I think that is good enough for him!
Are you sure? Sport is literally entertainment. If Jokic wasn't as good player as he is, he would be gotten rid of. Professional, humble, very skilled white player - nba hates him
Also because of the propaganda in the 90's which portrayed Serbs as bad people in order to justify the illegal military action in the Balkans. One of the reasons why sportsmen like Djokovic and Jokovic get less (positive) attention.

I stopped watching the NBA in the early 2000s. I watch old NBA videos. I'd heard Jokic's name the past couple years because he won the MVP twice. I didn't really care but I kept seeing lots of hype but much more hate and dismissiveness. I finally watched some videos of his highlights and I was really impressed. I started watching the NBA again because of him. I live in Denver. Everybody LOVES the guy here.
As an older American, I love Jokic. He's amazing. Humble and good at what he does. He doesn't feed the machine, and he still makes a ton of money. His teammates can do all the social media stuff. I realize it's not exciting for kids to watch maybe, but older men can appreciate him.

But people grew to love Luka because of his end all be all style of play. However, that made me a Mavs fan rather disappointed because that made him not so special and less likely to be a backbone of a dynasty
The thing with Doncic is his play is unsustainable.

I remember 3 or so years ago when the NBA MVP race was between Nikola, LeBron and Harden. When interviewed about the race, LeBron said "I should have won more MVPs." Harden said "I'm the MVP!" Nikola said "Jamal Murray is the best player on our team."
So basically Jokic lied while Lebron and Harden really spoke what was on their minds lol, with that logic you probably think Mohamed Ali was the most arrogant guy ever
