- 4 leather strands are round braided against a wood core, followed by the same 4 strands round braided without the core. The leather strands that are braided around the core are ~8 mm wide each; in the round braiding without the core the leather thongs are thinned from ~8 to ~4 mm to give the round braid a tapered look. Demonstration 6.

Thank you!! This is a great video!!
This is a superb effect. Seems difficult to start off though? Worth it though. 👍🇬🇧
Nicely Explained. Thank you 👍👍👍
Thank you, this was so useful! Especially because you coloured the strands in different colours!
If you found it useful then this video has served its purpose, and I am glad. Most of my braiding demonstrations are color coded to make them easier to learn.
Thank you, you helped me put my leather corded wallet/key chain back together. :)
I'm an absolute beginner and this is perfect for me. Thank you!!
+Karma Camilleon You're most welcome. The patriarch of trees started life as a tiny seed.
I like the way you demonstrate how to I want to thank you for showing us how it's done and easy to follow thanks again reuben
NP. Glad you liked it.
This was easier to understand than the Beadaholique video; it made the structure clearer. I think it helped that you started with the braid around the core, and then without a core. And we got two demos for the price of one!
Thanks KA. I try to be efficient in my videos.
thank you very much for the post!
Great video dude, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for the video!

Thanks!
+dzejsenka You're welcome.
How long should the strands need to be for a given finished piece?
No worries, I stretched the core, and it works well. Same as using a 4 leather braid, but when it is off stretch it is impossible to move.
What once ant type leather are you using. Also if you run out can another piece be spliced in?
u teached very gud and simple
Thank you.
where do you get your leather? do you order it? i am having a hard time finding this locally...or anything suitable for braiding a bullwhip. i am hesitant to order online unless i know specifically what i am ordering is correct...can you help? i need exactly what you used here. btw...thank u for the video...this was easy to learn from.
I know it can be hard to find the right leather. Ideally you'd want rawhide to make a really snappy whip, but you won't find it commercially, you'd have to make it yourself. I have a video on making raw hide. The next best is to use a rawhide core and braid thin vegetable tanned leather around it and build up the whip layer by layer. Vegetable tanned kip leather is what I usually use, the thin stuff 1-2 mm. But any vegetable tanned leather will work. As for the core, you can braid a tight 4 thong veg tan leather the full length of the whip, excluding the fall part. Good luck with your project.
Without a core, I estimate the length of the strands to be about double of needed product length. With a core, is 2.5 times expected product length enough?
So how do you make a 4 strand on poly cord?
Can you teach how to make 8 strand gaucho braid around core with 2 different colors. Thanks in advance.
Great job. Made it easy
Thanks. Glad to hear.
Hi. I’m trying to do a wrap around a handle. My leather is 2.5-3mm thick and I’m having trouble. Is the leather just too thick? What thickness is best? Thanks. Brian.
Try beveling/thinning the edges. It will make it lay better.
Hi. I have softer leather now. I’m managing the wrap okay, but I keep getting gaps where I can see underneath? What would cause this? My cuts are the right width? Thanks, Brian.
you're likely pulling the leather or have uneven width, or your width is too small.
where do I find that type of leather?
You can buy it online, some craft store will have them. They are called vegetable tanned leather.
Subscribed. Hope you are well.
This is going to sound stupid. But I used this braid on a handle on a handbag. I got in trouble when selling it because they said it was cultural appreciation of native American heritage.
That is quite ridiculous. All cultures have braided leather for generations. Don’t pay any attention to ‘cultural appropriation’ rubbish.
OK I'm pretty sure this does not fall under the umbrella of cultural appropriation. I can't imagine that only one culture used this knot, it's probably used by every culture just like the wheel. Just curious: who told you that?
For thong braid? Nope. Four strand round braid
Thanks!
You're welcome!
