I have to disagree. 105 is the sweet spot. There is not much difference between Ultegra and 105. That's why Ultegra is priced closer to 105 than Dura Ace. Ultegra and Dura Ace might feel similar, but so does a well tuned 105. However, what you pay for with Dura Ace is what you generally don't see. If you break down each component, you'll notice that derailleurs on Ultegra and 105 are designed exactly the same, with Ultegra using lighter materials with a better finish. Ultegra is actually closer to 105 than it is to Dura Ace. Ultegra is more of a "105 SL." Dura Ace has a different internal design on the derailleurs, using lighter, sturdier internals... meaning more expensive materials with an even better finish than Ultegra. As for shifters, Dura Ace uses a 4 bearing design; Ultegra and the others use a single bearing design, plus Dura Ace uses full carbon shift levers. Ultegra uses carbon fiber with a plastic resin. 105 uses all plastic (they use another name for it though). Only gripe with Dura Ace is the cassette on the 9000 and 9100 models. It's use of titanium on the cassette means that while it is lighter than Ultegra, it wears faster; which is why I and so many others use Ultegra cassettes. Ultegra and Dura Ace might feel the same when new, but after a lot of time and use, you realize why Dura Ace costs more. The shifters and derailleurs generally last longer. As for why 105 is called 105, I really don't know. However, it has been called 105 since it was introduced in the 1980's. Ultegra used to be called Shimano 600 back then; Dura Ace has been Dura Ace since the 70's. In the 80's, due to Shimano's fear of tarnishing the Dura Ace name with a failed product, 105 was where all the latest technology was introduced: SIS, Biopace, and let's not forget SLR brakes. Even Dura Ace owners racing to get 105 brakes at that time. SLR brakes, like the current Dura Ace brakes, were the best on the market, and they were only available on 105 when first introduced. 105 has seen success in many types disciplines, racing, touring, cyclocross, tandems, etc. Changing the name would be like changing the name of Dura Ace. Shimano phased out 600 in favor of Ultegra in the 90's. While 600/Ultegra has always been a great gruppo, it never had the reputation of 105. It wasn't until the introduction of carbon bikes that people really embraced Ultegra the way they do today. Back in the 90's, carbon bikes were initially only equipped with Ultegra or Dura Ace (provided they were equipped with Shimano components. Many who wanted carbon bikes, either didn't want to spend the money or couldn't afford the bump to Dura Ace, they were relegated to Ultegra. 105 wasn't used on carbon bikes until the mid 2000's. As for Tektro, they make brakes for several entry level to mid level bikes for a very long time. I'm surprised you've never heard of them!. The performance isn't the best with them until you swap out the pads for a set of aftermarkets, like the Kool Stop salmon pads. If that's not enough to impress you, have you ever heard of a high end brand of brakes called TRP? TRP is Tektro.
I am so glad I came across your video. Thank you so much for all the information you provided me through your video. Now I can make a much educated decision.
The point is they are more comfortable in life financially than y’all are who can’t afford it 🤣 don’t be a hater, maybe if y’all work just as hard to get a better pay just as you do on ya fitness then y’all maybe can afford it 😉
I don't know that I would say that ultegra is the sweet spot. I just ordered a Giant defy advanced pro 2, so with 105. I looked at the pro 1 with ultegra, and read everything I could find, and other than the color of the bike, it having ultegra instead of 105 was the only difference I could find and it was 400£ more expensive. 400£ to save just a few grams doesn't seem like a sweet spot to me.
baconfromhell666 it's because the price scale remains fairly spaced until Ultegra, but the gap between Ultegra to Dura-Ace is totally different and goes into luxury item category.
Hi! Nice video, Im new to road bikes! thinking of purchasing my first, do you think you can post an updated video similar to this one. Would you still recommend the current Canyon Endurace AL 7.0 2020 .. Cheers !
Not surprised Trek got the last place out of those bikes. in most cases price to performance ratio on Trek bikes are sub par. i also have owned road bikes from Trek, Specialized and Giant and Trek was the only bike i got continuously disappointed as i rode them.
Not only choice of groupset matters. Wheels & tires but also cofort components like the seatpost affects the value of a bike. Canyon I belive is the only one with a really good carbon/graphite seatpost that smoothens the ride significantly over an alu piece. Also the giant comes with tubeless wheels and tires if I’m not misstaken. Nice comparison over geometry!
Very good analysis. I wouldn't get hung up on group sets. Sora & tiagra groups work fine but you do notice a bigger jump between gears. Dura-ace is very expensive for what it is.
Good video, 105 component worth the money, best for value, trek is always pricy with the same component as compared with giant, unless use SRAM components so it’s not easily see the difference.
Why do you have the domane instead of the emonda, the domane is priced higher because of the isospeed which none of the other bikes have any features like it on their frames
I'm currently looking at changing my heavy cheap hybrid and buying a bike in this sort of price range. I have had a look at the majority of these (didn't look at Specialized) and the one I like the most is the Scott Speedster. I have a bit of weight behind me so the 28 tyres is definitely a plus compared to the thinner 25s
Nice idea with the graph but it's wildly flawed. The biggest variation would be in body positions, wheels and then somewhere the frame. Air resistance is exponential - you would maybe gain a couple MPH max going from £999 to £12500.
I’d say the sweet spot is 1000-1500. For that you can easily get a good bike with 11s group like 105 or ultegra and a full carbon frame. Everything after 11s and full carbon frame will be marginal gains. Never buy new, get them used. From what I’ve seen on bike listings bikes seem to loose like 50% value after the first ride...
i think 2 grand might be the sweet spot. Shimano 105 has the same shifting performance as ultegra/dura ace, only difference is weight and you’d get a nice aluminum frame.
If I could afford it and had a place to store it I would probably get a Canyon. Read about them lately and it seems they do give a pretty good value for the money not to mention it's the honest thing not to swap out the more 'obscure' components like everyone else seems to do.
I have a alloy bike with medium low alloy wheels and 105 in the UK and a full Italian carbon bike with Dura Ace in another country. Essentially there is no difference other than a second or two over cat 4 type climbs. Differences are inflated by marketing.
I think it’s time for another video - orbea avant h30 - caad 13 - synapse I would add Rose Pro SL, but that would be unfair. Canyon and Rose give you a lot more for your money but availability can be sketchy and you can’t try them out before buying.
If your budget is 1000 max, than it is highly improbable that you will ride/have friends that afford 3-4000 USD bikes. More likely the more expensive bikes will spend more time inside, than on the tarmac. Very rich people do not have the time or the will to ride, they buy them to show off.
I wanted a Specialized Allez (red and white, ala American Flyers) or a Scott, for obvious reasons, but couldn't find either available, even online. Just put a down payment on a Giant Contend AR 1 yesterday.
No cannondale synapse ? Im so disappointed my bike got last. Im so into trek Im a trek fan. But is true why they use lower group sets And price their bikes higher?
I’m enjoying the bike so far czcams.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
I can't even find the canyon bike without disc brakes???? And just found out (comment section) the allez are being recalled because of the fork..... looks like trek is moving on up lol 😎
Bikotic I'm from the US and the lowest option canyon gives me is the same model... but with disc brakes which bumps it up to the 1,500 mark.... what a shame usually the US has the most options available
Canyon entered US market Aug '17 and are not offering full line up right away. They are testing waters and said it will take some time before they start offering the full catalog.
Domane AL3 2020 is 733 £, not 1000 £, with the same specs... It would be the Émonda ALR 4 instead this year for that price point. Maybe they went crazy when they put that price to the Domane ALR3...
The price of the Trek with sora is 990 euros in Europe thats around 900pounds. Maybe you got the price confused with Treks alr4 which is equipped with tiagra. Great video otherwise.
Sweetspot at 3500 pounds? Mmm, I'd argue it's lower, much lower. Electronic shifting, more than 9 or 10 speeds, and fancy carbon layup are luxury items, a person could ride perfectly fine and perfectly fast without them. A 1000 pound bike with 1000 pound aero wheels is the sweetspot imo, so about 2000.
Let me introduce you to Economics 101. Inflation happens naturally in any economy. Some countries are worse than others. Do you make the exact same per month today as you did 3 years ago? If not, your purchasing power has also gone up, meaning the 200 dollars you refer to is actually 0! Yes 0.
Interesting video. Your comment about halfords bikes made me wonder if you disagree about the times in this video. czcams.com/video/ow7MdsSVQuw/video.html I guess the bike in that video would be very similar to the Carrera Virtuoso a bike that sells for about £325 but has been sold as low £230. I personally think diminishing returns start much lowering in the pricing and groupsets for normal/average riders. I think for many a Claris equipped road bike would delivery performance very close to the higher end bikes of this video. I mean the Giant Contend 2 is only about £500, less than £400 currently for 2018 models and is sub 10kg. I suspect the times would be extremely close to these £1,000 models even with its Claris groupset. I wish someone would do a video review of many road bikes at different price points and even some retro bikes and give a comparison based on the same circuit and rider just to see how times improved and where. I believe the speed of a bicycle is pretty much 99% down to the engine just like other vehicles.
come on, don't align the picture with front wheel axle. Instead, make rider the center and align with bottom bracket (center of the crankset). The reason is very simple, some bike have longer front end but short rear end, some bike is just long on both way. With your way of aligning front wheel, it's hard to detect ratio between front and rear length. Even exact comparison of seat post angle is harder because your starting point of seat tube doesn't start from the same place on each picture.
thanks for your comment, I will certainly have a look and see how your idea works - generally though i'm interested in comparing head angles, stack, reach, offset and wheelbase which works well aligning the front wheel
Stack and Reach measure from top of head tube point to center of Bottom Bracket, no center of front wheel involve. Aligning one of the measurement point make for even easier comparison. Wheel base still can be compared, and now we can split between difference in front center and rear center easier. It can also make for easier detection if some bike's BB is lower or higher than another. If a frame has higher BB drop ( BB sit lower) you'll see that their wheel sit higher compare to another bike with higher bb position. head tube angles and (fork) offset may not be any easier to compare though.
From a £1000 bike to 10 grand bike your more like talking maybe 1 to 1.5mph faster, I've said it a million times that an expensive bike won't make you faster, train hard eat right is better advice than anything
Very very interesting. I love the way you arrive at ranking. A bit risky for newbie to buy Canyon on-line IMHO - better getting fitted at local bike shop! All these bikes are good, and new Sora is a very competent chain set, as is Tiagra; no problem if you’re on a budget. Here’s an interesting vlog on Tektro czcams.com/video/ThJR_RXbvZA/video.html
Anything less than 105 is not worthwhile? C'mon now, we all know that's complete garbage. You offer no reason other than weight and snobbery. Why? Because there are no valid reasons to avoid the groupsets below 105. Tiagra/Sore/Claris are durable, inexpensive, easily maintained, and shift flawlessly. They will outlast the bike you put them on. Be a rebel, not a snob.
I have to disagree. 105 is the sweet spot. There is not much difference between Ultegra and 105. That's why Ultegra is priced closer to 105 than Dura Ace. Should be ranked bassed on how well they ride ...

Electronic shifting, more than 9 or 10 speeds, and fancy carbon layup are luxury items, a person could ride perfectly fine and perfectly fast without them. A 1000 pound bike with 1000 pound aero wheels is the sweetspot imo, so about 2000.
having a bike that weighs 4 pounds more is hardly going to make any difference at speed on the flats.....

I tried this out this morning, quite liked it, might give it ago on my next video to see what people think - cheers for the idea.
You said I shouldn't have anything less than shimano 105 then you said that Claris sora and tiagra are all just fine
So what do you mean. Ffs
Take them against my aliexpress carbon race machine
CANYON FOR THE WIN
The trek is not 1200 $ it’s 950 ish dollars*
allez is recalled...
perwiratempur why?
Carbon fork fails
90 RPM all fixed now!
From a £1000 bike to 10 grand bike your more like talking maybe 1 to 1.5mph faster, I've said it a million times that an expensive bike won't make you faster, train hard eat right is better advice than anything
Preach it!
Rose Pro sl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AL 3 doesn’t even look good neither think I’m going to soon purchase allez base model then add upgrades later on
I can't believe you are discussing bikes and never heard of Tektro or carbon composite.
i want 105 di2
Very very interesting. I love the way you arrive at ranking. A bit risky for newbie to buy Canyon on-line IMHO - better getting fitted at local bike shop! All these bikes are good, and new Sora is a very competent chain set, as is Tiagra; no problem if you’re on a budget. Here’s an interesting vlog on Tektro

haha, weird that video was published 5 days after I published mine - a few days before and I might have known who Tektro where! Thanks for the tip.
ha! all this time believing I had the top with my tiagra????
Trek's over priced. No disc brake, yet heavier, cheap Sora gears.
Where is the £1500 league bike comparison?
Graph is completely wrong
+Sam Lederman. No, its awesome
Useless
thanks Bill
Anything less than 105 is not worthwhile? C'mon now, we all know that's complete garbage. You offer no reason other than weight and snobbery. Why? Because there are no valid reasons to avoid the groupsets below 105. Tiagra/Sore/Claris are durable, inexpensive, easily maintained, and shift flawlessly. They will outlast the bike you put them on. Be a rebel, not a snob.
