God-Talk: Let the Ragged be Ragged

  • The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein warned against shooting for artificial precision in language. "The ragged must be left ragged," he said. This is especially true when it comes to discourse about God, which, given the essential incomprehensibility of divine mystery, is always raggedly ambiguous. We must be careful not to snip away the frayed edges either by a fundamentalist reading of Scripture or an overly cerebral theologizing that reduces God to an abstract definition.
