    Thanks again for reacting to this! As Americans, we really do love our flag. In many schools, you have the American and state flag outside AND an American flag inside of every classroom. Many students still start their days or their weeks with the "Pledge of Allegiance" (although it isn't mandatory). It isn't that we think that America is perfect (far from it). However, we are a nation of immigrants. Most of our ancestors (and even many of us) left their homelands to come to this nation that is ever-seeking to be a "more perfect union." No matter if you're a Republican or Democrat, conserative, moderate or liberal, most Americans believe in collective liberty. We believe that our freedoms are innate -- something that we are born with and the Constitution is created to solidify this -- placing limits on the national government and its politicians from infringing on those liberties.

      Well said! And, when I was in school, the Pledge of Allegiance was definitely mandatory. Public school. I remember one kid getting sent to the principals office for not putting his hand over his heart after being told to. We really really really do love our flag. I think it’s partly because most of us have some military family, or military history, or I have come here, seeking a better life. As a result, that flag means a hell of a lot. It’s something people fight for, people, die for, and people leave their homes to seek. As an American, I just want all of those people to get what they deserve. As a wounded Army veteran, I prefer the true story. And the truth is that we were smarter and tougher than the british, and we had the high ground. The bombardment lasted for 27 HOURS. We did not sit there overnight dying holding the flag. We were too busy shooting back. We fought, as warriors, in glory. I just wish this video wasn’t the one going viral instead of the real history.
    This one is so ridiculously exaggerated as to be mostly myth rather than history but it’s gotten so widespread that many people think it’s the actual history and never bother to look up the real history that it’s based on.
    There is a kernel of truth behind this story as Francis Scott Key did write the lyrics after observing the flag following the bombardment of Fort McHenry. But the accuracy doesn’t go much beyond that.
    The British didn’t have hundreds of ships attacking the fort, they had 19. The fort didn’t have lots of women and children inside, it was primarily a military structure and women and children would have been mostly in the city of Baltimore instead. The British didn’t issue an ultimatum regarding the flag, though taking the fort was a critical strategic point that was necessary to either side to have a chance at winning the war.
    There weren’t piles of bodies supporting the flag, in fact the ships couldn’t get close enough in the harbor due to some defenses that had been set up and so were unable to do much damage, in fact only 4 men inside the fort were killed at all. The flag that Frances Scott Key saw in the morning also likely wasn’t even the one flying through the night, they usually raised an oversized flag in the morning for reveille in place of a smaller battle flag flying overnight.

      I forgot to mention that we sing them in church still but mostly around the 4th and Memorial Day and Veterans Day. We hold our flag with so much respect because of the fight for it. As far as the pattern, there are 13 stripes (for the 13 original colonies - 6 white and 7 red). There are now 50 stars, one for each state. The original one had 13 stars in a circle. Our flag means much more to us than being just a piece of fabric and therefore, we have many ways to show it. I, for one, respect everyone who has fought for our country and so I show that respect to my flag!!!!! Thank you for sharing the story with your mother.

In the theater before the movie starts, all stand for the National Anthem. The story about the Anthem i dont think many are aware of. It was actually a poem with several verses and later music was added as it became our Nation Anthem. If you want to hear in my opinion, the best rendition was when Whitney Houston sang it at the openning of the super bowl in 1992 during Desert Storm.

      You are partly right and partly wrong. Key was not aboard a British prison ship during the bombardment, but he was aboard a British troopship anchored 4 miles away. He had been sent to try to negotiate the release of one civilian captive and was detained when the bombardment started. His vantage point to see what was going on, especially during the night, was certainly less than ideal but when dawn broke he was able to see that the flag was still flying over the fort and penned his poem. It's a little unclear, but I don't believe he ever set foot in the fort in the aftermath. Some propaganda, some truth.

No one died holding up the flag, and there was no cargo hold full of prisoners for Key to relate the happenings of the battle to. The British made no ultimatum, and didn't even mention the flag. There were also only sixteen ships, not "hundreds". Virtually everything is fictional in this account, aside from the battle happening, and Scott writing a poem after.

We have actual eyewitness accounts of this, and the story in the video is almost completely made up, as I said. No one should be okay with historical revisionism, especially on this scale. This is one of the worst examples I've seen. Thus is why we don’t allow the flag to touch the ground and it must be lit up if flown at night, so it is always visible. Additionally, when the flag is removed from a pole, casket of a vet, etc there are distinct folds to represent very specific things. Also, our MIA/POW tables have reasons and positions for everything on them. We taught our Girl Scout Troop what they are, how to properly fold the flag and even though it was a troop of 2nd & 3rd graders to start, they were taught this and a flag ceremony was a part of every “formal” activity we had. Glad you enjoyed learning a bit of our heritage and shared your thoughts on it

    I appreciate your reaction and for sharing this. However, this video is not entirely true. I don't know why this particular video is still being circulated. I shared it on Facebook a couple of years ago and it was instantly blocked/removed by fact checkers. Just like you and other channels, I didn't know. Love the time and effort you put into your reactions! Howdy from Texas 🤠🤠

      @willsofer3679 Před 11 měsíci +1

      It's not even remotely true, except that a battle happened, and Scott wrote a poem about it the next day. There was no cargo hold full of prisoners, no hundreds of ships (just 16), no piles of bodies, no woman and children killed (the only woman in the fort was the commander's wife), no ultimatum regarding the flag, and no one died holding up the flag. By the way, the Beesleys know that this video is inaccurate. Well over 50 people told them in their last reaction, and they acknowledged it in another video. And they still decided to react to it again anyway, because it's the best performing video on their channel.

      Not just exaggerated, but completely false. The only accurate part is that there was a battle, and Scott wrote a poem. There was no ultimatum, no cargo hold full of prisoners, no hundreds of ships (just sixteen), and no piles of bodies, and none of them touched the flag (only four people died).

    Sorry, but there are so many errors here. This was not The Revolutionary War but The War of 1812. There were no colonies the U.S. was already a country (i.e. States). The Star Spangled Banner became the official national anthem in the early 1930s. There were several other songs in competition before then. The event at Baltimore and Fort McHenry did happen. The fort did not fall, there were 4 casualties. The official flag was raised in the morning which did signal the fort had not fallen. Key wrote a poem set to music later.

      There is a phrase, all gave some, but some gave all. Don't you think that those 4 lives meant something? Those 4 lives is why you can sit on here and complain about how good you have it.

    • @timfeeley714-25
      @timfeeley714-25 Před 11 měsíci +2

      Also Key was only negotiating the release of a single prisoner, it wasn't the entire British fleet dotting The horizon it was only 19 or 20 battleships and the fort was actually shelled off of barges because the ships couldn't get in a close enough, there is no historical record from either side of key ever having had a conversation with the admiral, the flagpole wasn't hit, there was no pile of bodies, the reason we don't let the flag touch the ground is because of ex slave, civil war hero and great American William Harvey Carney.

      @@moorek1967 Any ultimate sacrifice is to be noted. Four is not a pile of dead bodies holding up the flag. This was not researched. It is inaccurate. Pity because the real story is still impressive but factual. I did NOT complain about how good I have it. I noted the inaccuracies about this Vlog-considerable since he starts by getting the war wrong. Enjoy the real story which is still moving, the one that really happened. Not the one here trying to fit someone's agenda, or just made up as he rambles along.

      This isn't history. This story is completely made up. The narrator even gets the name of the fort wrong, and mixes up the revolution with the War of 1812. But people holding up the flag, a cargo hold full of prisoners, multiple people dying? None of that happened.
