How to Hold & Unhook Catfish (Helpful Trick)

  • In this video I teach a few different methods how to safely hold catfish without getting spined, as well as a great trick to unhook them in seconds without even having to touch them! If you don't like to unhook fish, you will love this tool. I bought one from Amazon & one from Wish and they were both called “Fish Hook Remover Tool”.
    As a kid, catfish were the only fish I hated catching. I was scared that I was going to get stung by their barbs while trying to unhook them. Over the last few years I have learned a lot about catfish, including that they are great to eat! I learned how to handle them properly, but more importantly, I developed a technique to get them unhooked in seconds so I can get my bait back in the water faster and get back to walleye fishing.

    I just spent 40 minutes reading about catfish.
    Catfish can actually mess you up holy hell. I had no idea. I knew about getting stuck by the pectoral or dorsal fins and was told their skin had "some kind of venom" but I didn't know anymore than that. You said google it so I did. I'm honestly glad you did. It can be a potentially serious thing if you don't handle it. I'm the type to get a cut or something and just keep fishing. That's not one of those "eh, i'll deal with it when I get home" type deals. That's a "oh, I should definitely get this cleaned asap" kind of situation. The scariest part is how the spine is designed to tear open the skin to promote absorption of venom but also increases the chance of infection. Another solid reason to have a functioning first-aid kit when you go fishing.
    Appreciate the advice. Edit: Also, it can absolutely be fatal. Marine species are worse than Freshwater, but both can cause everything from dizziness/nausea and rapid heartrate to necrosis of the flesh and gangrene that lead to amputation in one case I just read. There's also been recorded deaths. Though I don't want anyone to freak out or anything, the vast majority of the time it's no different than any other cut and no other symptoms appear.

      A lot of catfish venom is like a bee sting… some are more serious but you dont see a lot of those in america. The problem is the bacteria can cause a really serious infection… some people say oh rub their slime on it no go and clean that cut lol

      Sorry for the delayed response! Fishing can be a great bonding activity for sure, I hope you guys have a great time. My opinion would be to start off cheap and simple. You can have plenty of success just using a cheap spinning combo. I used a $40 combo from Canadian Tire for about 20+ years. Start off just fishing for panfish (perch, bluegill, crappie) or bass with just a bobber, a hook, and live bait (minnows or worms). Research bodies of water close by that have a lot of fish that you can fish from the shore or a dock. You can use an app called "Fishbrain" to see what people are catching around you. For beginners and kids you want to find a spot that's as easy and productive as possible, get used to catching fish, unhooking them etc. Learn the excitement of fishing. Usually people that don't like fishing, is because someone took them out for hours and they didn't catch anything. Once you've decided if fishing is for you, then you can branch out into other techniques and methods like bass fishing, kayak fishing, cheap jon boat, etc. Hope this is somewhat helpful and best of luck!

    • @instaphippsyfishing
      @instaphippsyfishing  Před rokem

      @@devonparish5678 great question, but also a tough question! It depends on the body of water you're fishing, but if you know there are fish there, and you know what species are there, you should be able to figure them out in time. If you're after catfish, you'll want your worm to be on the bottom or really close to it, if you're after bass you can use a bobber and maybe have a big worm floating a few feet below it, if you're after panfish (sunfish, perch, crappie), you can use a smaller hook and smaller piece of worm 2-3 feet below the bobber. All fish behave differently and hang out at different water depths at different times of the year. I find panfish are usually the easiest to catch, and a small hook is usually the key. Check out my video called "Sight Fishing Invasive Sunfish" and see how small of a hook and piece of worm i'm using!

    Looks like you yanked a bunch of the catfish's mouth-meat out with the hook too! Great job on the catch and release.

      That’s a good point. I catch most of my catfish while trolling, so I can feel as soon as they bite and set the hook so it’s only in their mouth. However, if you fish a bottom rig or bobber, they have time to swallow the bait & hook. I think the fish hook remover tool would still be helpful, it gets a solid grip on the shank of the hook and it had a long shaft. Then you would just need to push the hook out by pushing deeper into the fishes mouth towards the stomach. Probably easier said than done lol but it is doable. Best of luck!
