- I had a few people enquiring about my version of Don't Think Twice, It's Alright by Bob Dylan so here's a rough little lesson on how I go about picking this particular tune. Enjoy!

That jazzy outro curveball is one of the most interesting and refreshing parts I have heard in a folk cover. Pulled the rug under me when I first heard it and couldn't get it out of my head. Thanks for the lesson.

You've motivated me to get on top of this! Your version of Don't Think Twice is so beautiful it actually brings a (healing) tear. I just have it on repeat at the moment - same thing when I first heard it the other day.

Thank you so much for doing this. I really appreciate it. I'm a 'reasonable' fingerpicker and alternate bass is no problem. Delighted though that you showed your own little nuances that make the difference. Now I don't have to sit down and work it out. You're correct; IT IS an easy one to do for a seasoned fingerpicker. Reminds me of Mark Knofler describing how to fingerpick...learn the basics - thumb for 6,5,4, and fingers 1,2,3 for strings 3,2,1. Get comfortable with that, bring in alternation and then...forget it completely and away you go! It was great to hear him justify what I'd done myself many years earlier 😅. Nice to hear the Oz accent...I spent ten years there. Greetings from Ireland.
Yes! I remember seeing that video of Mark Knofler many years ago. I'd forgotten until you mentioned it. Maybe I was channeling some of that in my explanation. Its a nice space you get into where everything just happens on autopilot. That's not to say it happens without feeling, more so in fact. It just happens without the conscious mind coming in and muddling everything up!

Love your hybrid picking style, man. I've been practicing tons of alternate picking and I'm quite attached to my pick, so I don't want to go full fingerstyle. You have shown me that hybrid picking is the right way to go (for me). Cheers!
It can be a very useful thing. Especially if you are already adept with a pick and don't want to throw that technique aside. I feel like thumb picking definitely has its advantages, but it comes down to what you do. I find the versatility of this method perfect for me.
I feel like everybody really has their own take on what "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" should sound like, that's what makes this song so interesting, and timeless!
True. It has such a strong melody that it affords all kinds of iterations without falling apart. The mark of a good song.
Jordan, Please think about doing more videos. Besides having incredible ability at playing this instrument, you have specific arranging skill for the guitar (and Bass! -- nice work combining Bass and guitar on some of your work!)... A feel for arranging specifically for guitar is an art, a very valuable one! But it's like, "You own this instrument." You're doing it by "ear" (or as you said at one point, I believe, "the voice is leading the guitar/arrangement"). As with all great arranging, the music is the mistress to the words. Anyway, MY FIRST POINT IS: If you put "theory" first, you would have to put your "ear" second, and it's your ear that is a free-flowing fountain for guitar arranging! You're not bound! If theory were first, you'd feel so "boxed in" that you wouldn't feel free to create. I'm an all-too-much "boxed in" musician who knows theory quite well, being a "piano major," and it's always been a detriment to my creativity! So maybe, I know "a little" about that! Please keep creating for the guitar and Bass, and please keep sharing your creations by video. What you did here is perfect! MY SECOND POINT IS: Please believe that your arranging ability for the guitar is unique and worthy. It's "cool" guitar arranging. Very nice work. It probably wouldn't sound as good on the piano because what works for one instrument doesn't always sound good on another (even though your theory is correct!) Like, diminished chords can be called different things, depending on one's vantage point (i.e., the key and how it's functioning in the chord progression); and some chords just don't have a proper name because calling them thus-and-so with an added non-harmonic tone of thus-and-so HRRE is the best we can do! You know all that, but maybe everyone listening to this video doesn't. But, as I said, you're wise to place theory second (though it's needed moreso when you're trying to articulate what you're playing to others). But, you're MASTER at the guitar. What you hear and "think up" to do is REALLY NICE. SECOND POINT AGAIN: Be confident! Videos will further you along (although I doubt you made this video for that purpose). My "first love" is the piano. It always will be (although I can play violin and enjoy the classical guitar for the beauty of the pure notes and chords). ((Side Note: No classical I have can match the smaller Martins you've played, like the D-28 00-17, and the 1943 Martin that you used for "That' all right.")) But, I suspect you made this video simply because the guitar IS your "first love," and you wanted to connect in a unique way with your followers who have the same "first love." That should really make you happy! You accomplish that WELL in this video. Anyway, these are my ramblings as a piano major from the 1980s !!! (I'm 65-years-old, and worked at piano attempting to arrange for the piano some stuff like the Elvis piece you played, many years ago when he was singing it. But, your work is nicer than what I could come up with!). In short, I very much love your work! David F. Lee
Hey David! I really appreciate your thorough, and well considered response to what I'm doing here on CZcams. It was slow going at first but its nice to see it starting to gain momentum. I'm glad you appreciate my arrangements of songs. Its a good creative outlet for me, as well as writing my own material. As I get better with the process of recording myself play, and building on my skill set to actually be able to play effortlessly after all that faffing around setting up mics and such I will hopefully start putting out more of my own arrangements of songs. Its still a bit hit and miss but I'd like to start honing in my consistency. I'll keep at it, thank you David!.

By the way, that Martin you have is really musical, and it sounds wonderful. What is it specifically?
Thanks! I have had some work done on this thing recently and it sounds great now! It is a relatively new Martin OM-28. The action was a bit too low in this video, a new bone saddle solved that!

Out of curiosity, what’d you have done to it other than the saddle? Did it always sound that good? I’ve found so many of these to be complete dogs - dead, tight, and lifeless: om28, 000-18, etc.
@@LPKJFHIS Honestly, when I got this one, it was definitely one of those aforementioned dog. It was in such a bad way. A wealthy foreign gentleman decided to practice his lutherie skills. He attacked the finish with steel wool to make it "rustic", took the binding off and superglued in some black plastic strips which were half the size they needed to be, he'd given it some kind of haphazard neck reset which ruined the action, and also "scalloped" aka crudely chiselled away most of the top bracing. It was destroyed. Thankfully I had a builder friend restore this guitar. Taking the back off, replacing the bracing (unscalloped), redoing all the binding, resetting the neck and restoring the nitro with a fresh clear coat. It recently had another neck reset and saddle and I think it's perfect now. 000s are less snappy than OMs due to the shorter scale length. I like pretty fresh 11-53 gauge strings and relatively low action (1.5-2mm) with a dead straight neck. Personally I dislike any neck relief as I feel it can sort of rubberise the tone. Also the large diaphragm Telefunken U47 does a great job at capturing all the frequencies
@@Jordan_Thomas Super interesting. Love to hear about this kind of stuff! I just got myself a ‘65 guild f30 that was pretty much resorted by a luthier. It is really magical. Before that I let a ‘bag guitar’, a guitar in pieces that was rebuilt, 00-17 from ‘48 get away - it was the best guitar I’ve probably ever played. Direct with the notes, musical, balanced, and beyond playable. Before that, I played a rebuilt j50 that got away - also rebuilt and so musical and playable. I’m starting to think that some of the best guitars out there have been rebuilt by talented luthiers.
@@LPKJFHIS I tend to agree with you - guitars that have been to hell and back - that have been worked over by skilled luthiers so so so often tend to be great instruments. Its the added level of consideration, and maybe the rebuilding of something that's already worn in that tends to bring out something special. This OM-28 sounds exceptional these days. There is a 1953 Gibson J-45 in our shop at the moment (Premier Guitars Australia) that has to have all the inner bracing reglued. Its for sale as is, and I think it could be an amazing guitar if properly reassembled.
No denigration meant .. however... has anyone ever mentioned you are in the same vein as Johnny Depp ??? Damn skilled and "it's my world" take it or leave it.
BTW I make Bloody Mary's with Aquavit.
Personally I can’t see it, but that’s one heck of a compliment. Maybe you could elaborate? I do know what you mean with regard to Johnny Depp. I think that’s why he remains to be so beloved.
