Woohoo! New favorite review!! OK, maybe not my favorite review (what's up Sliger case reviews). But I've been easing into home audio recording (guitar and choir stuff) over the last two years, and oh man, I would love it if you had more music tech on the show. True story, just a few minutes ago I was browsing videos trying to learn if there's ever a situation where PCIe audio capture cards make more sense than USB audio interfaces for an amateur enthusiast like me.
Anyway, I know this type of review isn't your bread and butter, but I really enjoyed this one all the same!
Ben Richards, glad you liked this one! I doubt I'll venture to far into PC audio tech, but that question on PCIe interfaces sounds pretty interesting! I'm still slumming on a USB mic, despite so many viewers telling me that it's XLR or bust!
Good idea about the visual notification, but you’ll be able to tell if it’s still working because it hasn’t vibrated/beeped yet meaning it hasn’t locked in the tuning for the string.
According to my music teacher back in school I have absolute pitch, or at least close to it. Turns out that doesn't make me musical in the least. It just means I suffer when people sing out of pitch or when instruments are badly tuned. I did learn to tune a guitar pretty well, but haven't touched one in over 40 years. The strings hurt my fingers so bad I refused to continue playing. The final tuning Roadie made was good enough to not give me headache so I guess it was at least decent. Funnily it did make me feel like taking down the guitar from the wall. The thick layer of dust saved me...

Thanks for the review. I own way to many guitars to want to calibrate all of them. Its cool but im gonna stick with my polytune for +/-0.02 accuracy
I bought this to store my own twisted Sonic Youth-like tunings, and although I've entered a few of mine in the app, they're ignored by the tuner. Also, when I get to string #6, the tuner goes into a coma. So, this device is good for tuning your last 5 strings only.
So every demo I've seen of this, the player is at least close to being in tune within a few cents up or down. What if you're terribly out of tune? How good is it then?
Nicely done. I just got the Roadie 3 and had the same experiences you demonstrate. Calibration is a must. For a real treat, try it on an acoustic 12-string. I've been playing for about 50 years and it took me about 15 minutes to get the thing to properly tune my Taylor 12. That's way too long if you're playing in front of an audience. And, for reasons I don't understand, it didn't work at all on the D string. It didn't do a thing. And this was after it dramatically detuned my A string all the way down to an D or something. Oddly, it did OK with the octave strings.
I think it's OK for a Fender or other instrument that has all the tuning pegs on one side. Otherwise, tuning the G, B and E strings requires strength and some wrist acrobatics.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I should probably calibrate again. It still fails to tune my high E string, but otherwise does a pretty good job!

Honestly, I wasn't sure I'd play on camera, and that was an improvised take, neither rehearsed nor reshot. Once I watched it, I decided to cut the standard conclusion I'd already filmed. And thanks to your suggestion, I'm feeling like it might be worth recording a background track to loop in all my videos!
Your D string was ringing while you were tuning other strings. That will confuse any tuner. Other reviews of this show it’s very accurate in “tune up” mode. It looks useful to change from standard to open tunings on the fly. That said, I think I want one!

I used the roadie 3 for the first time on Easter, I broke d string. Yes I am new to the guitar. I think it’s a great tool, I really need study it a bit more.
You have to make sure to watch the cues for when it's time to move to the next string. If it thought the D string was a G string, it would over-tighten it.
I like your user suggestions.
Now all I can see in my mind's eye is the string to tune on the app and a green circle to keep strumming or a red square to stop.

Interesting suggestion. I think they tried to provide the best overall solution when both performance and convenience were taken into account.
I think the coolest feature of the Roadie 3 is how it can do alternate tunings. Yeah I'm pretty lazy
Oh, you do guitar stuff also? I play bass and fine that some tuners strugle with low E string, not to mention B

Gibson got so much backlash from the guitarist community when they introduced self tuning robot guitars in 2007. Almost two decades later some random company re-introduces the same concept except that it is semi-auto tuning due to having to hold the gadget in your hand and people call it a genius invention. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think it uses vibrations not a microphone.
With normal tuners When you speak it interferes with the tuner im guessing thats where alot of your issue's came from here
looking at how unoptimised this autotuner is, I think manual tuning with either tuner app on phone, digital tuner stompbox, or clip on tuners will still do better for at least 5 more years (if the company still continue their development of this autotuner of course).
and since I mostly play in whole step down tuning (when I play guitar) anyway so manual chromatic tuner is the only way to go for me in the meantime.
The tuner actually has many tuning modes, definitely whole step down. It does well when calibrated, and has a slower high precision mode that I didn't demonstrate.

And we still have to account for string action heights for it to have the desireable tune.
Gibson had similar tuner built in their guitar years ago, players hated it...
Wow, I didn't know that. Just looked it up, and seems like it launched way back in 2007. Actually a pretty neat idea, but I could imagine it might have drawbacks when built into the guitar, not least of which making the guitar obsolete when the tech becomes obsolete.
All robot tuner systems are rubbish,playing since you were7 yrs old and can’t tune a standard pitch on a 6 string,nice promo for Roadie.
I dont know much about your pc tech stuff but I do know a lot about gtrs and not only do these stink; inaccurate vs say a manual strobe tuner and also don’t work on buzz feiten systems.
I hear you on that. This is all about convenience, I wouldn't trust it if stepping on stage.

Could it be that it's having so much trouble tuning your guitar, because your machine heads are as dry and crusty as your fretboard? 🤔 Also, changing one string? Are you performing live, or just lazy?
Remove those strings and maintain your instrument, before I stop this performance and show the whole class how it's done.
