    Formula E's finally figured out a way to avoid the silly have-to-switch-cars thing? Great!
    I remember watching one of the first FE races where commentators were talking about how a guy pulling into the pits was going to need to retire because of damage, only for the "oh, wait, never mind, he's getting into a different car" realization to hit them a few seconds later. That was mildly amusing.

      Indeed, but on the other hand, it was weird but also funny in the first season, how both title contenders weren't be able to score points in the title deciding rsce, so it came down to who posted the fastest lap. It was weird at first but makes a lot of sense. Come to think of it, it doesn't really matter how pitstops work after all. It's all part of racing strategy. No matter how you do it. That being said; I want refueling back in F1!

    My brother was a NASCAR pit crew man for 3 years. Specifically, the rear tire changer (operating the pneumatic gun). He always said he was jealous of F1 mechanics because they only had to hit one bolt on each tire meanwhile In NASCAR he had to hit about 6 bolts on each tire. Also, NASCAR teams only hire ex-college or professional athletes and held a combine like event to find their pit crew. About 260 tried out and they only took 3.

I still think nascar pit stops are incredibly impressive at the sheer speed of doing 5 lugs. But that doesn’t mean F1’s 2 second pit stops AREN’T impressive

      I've always thought NASCAR pitstops could be improved a lot. Not sure how. Maybe use pneumatic jacks in the bottom of the car so all 4 tires could be changed at once and have the gas man use a hose from a tank, both like Indy. Those gas cans seem so archaic. On the other hand, the tire guys are incredibly fast with the lug nuts. They must practice constantly. It must take a long time to learn and condition yourself (including muscle memory) to remove and re-apply the lug nuts.

    Thank you for this unbiased look at these different methods. I never knew how strange the Formula E and Endurance pit stops were before. Also, thank you for breaking down exactly why the NASCAR pit stops are so much of a struggle and take so much longer than F1. So many F1 fans don't realize the limitations NASCAR crews have to deal with, and the five lug nut thing is honestly outdated and should be changed at this point. There've been way too many issues that have come out of a single lug nut not being tightened all the way.

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam Před 2 lety +1

      Right. And F1 has never had any issues with their one-and-only-one lug not being torqued. 4 out of 5 is much better than 0 out of 1. (In F1, if they get that -- or anything, really -- wrong, their race is over.) I'd still rather watch F1. NASCAR is rather boring to watch. For 2018 the gasman is only allowed gas the car (to prevent fires and people leaving with the can still attached). They also moved to 5 men over the wall instead of 6. A standard strategy for those 5 men has yet to be developed. The change has increased the average pitstop time by about 2.5 seconds.

      EliteJerk im also confused by their wording of „stops take between 30-40s“
      WEC and German Version VLN both have mandatory standing times depending on laps driven (or time left in the race for the last hour approximatly). In the qualifying race for the 24h Nürburgring, if you pitted ~65min before end of the race you had a mandatory standing time of 195s i believe.
      What im trying to say is, that while the „important stuff“ refuelling, tire change, window cleaning, driver change and so on surely are optimized, if you need to stay put afterwards anyways due to regulations it causes less stress, therefore less mistakes are made and its safer for everyone (and also fair in a 24h race, because Pit Time should be the same for everyone, disregarding the amount of stops)
      Edit: just searched for it and apparently the mandatory stopping time isnt a thing in WEC... interesting.

      its not a thing in most endurance races. Some races like VLN or 24 hours of nurb have this rule to stop some lower end teams from making unsafe pit stops. Dont forget there are some much slower cars, and they wont have the same gadgets and tools as the GT3 cars will. As those teams on the lower end of the classes are more "amateur" (wrong word but i lack another one), its unwise to pressure them into making a blinding fast pit stop, only to find that they left a wheel nut loose and the tyre comes flying off half way around a 9 minute lap, thats a looooong way from home when that happens.

      Negative. If they do a front wing change, the two guys whose task is adjusting front flap perform the front wing change.

    Great information! I would enjoy knowing the training a person must do in order to perform their job... Is there a campion or a legend name that has a title? Having such title as the best of the best should be given to???? Bob

    My favourite pit stop is Guidi who changes all 4 tires from McQueen's car in 1.5 seconds on his own. (Any cars fans over here?)
