Giving data the ability to have a laugh was one of the greatest things Q ever did. It was a really nice, warm thing to do and it made me like Q more as a character.

'The cold' is simply a viral infection. It's really not far fetched that in a few hundred years those can be completely rooted out, especially in a limited space like a starship.
Probably could cure it easily but better that people just let it happen. It's not harmful and it's much easier to let the immune system keep itself strong than to have to immunise against every disease there is
If you isolate a viral infection long enough, it can "die" actually. There are some diseases out there, very viral, that have actually gone extinct due to bad timing and bad luck on their parts. I like how in Disney's The Legend of Tarzan the cartoon, they briefly cover this, that if you're unearthing things, you run the chance of _stirring_ the ground and resurfacing diseases.
