Flashier graphics, better CGI in movies, spend more and hire a famous person to draw the crowds in. The UK can't always do that, so you have to lure people in another way. That can work great, and it can fall flat. Dr. Who, before it was relaunched, was kind of a joke. Wonky sets and men in bad rubber masks. The ideas were good, but the execution undercut a lot of what they were trying to do. Then, on the other hand, you have something like Yes Minister. It's a political satire, but 90% of the show is just three men sitting in an office and talking. It sounds painfully dull, but it's hilarious - and it holds up as excellent and surprisingly accurate political satire even 40 years later.
Hansel amusingly, The Day Today completely spoofs the overdramatic music and overblown intro graphics that were becoming a thing in the news around this time - and never really went away.
When you can call a character like Denholm the low point of a man's career, that does nothing but show how glorious the rest of it is. And it bloody well is too.
I was oddly disappointed in Denholm the first time I saw the IT Crowd. I mean, Morris acts him perfectly well, but it paled into comparison to everything I'd seen him do before. I think I appreciate the hamminess more now, but I still agree it counts as his "low" point. Matt Berry was truly great in the role, but that's because that man is basically the living embodiment of ham 😄
