Canada vs Australia - Which country is more liveable?

- Canada and Australia are 2 of the most livable countries on earth but how do they compare? Which has better health? Education? Employment?
Data Sources: pastebin.com/eLJFEaCA
The first connection between Canada and Australia was the deportation of 154 Canadian rebels to Australia in the 1800s. Since then counties have developed strong ties and having fought alongside each other in multiple wars and UN security council missions.
This is Alex, an Aussie with family in Canada, and today I wanted to objectively compare these countries to see which is more liveable. So looking at education, employment, health, happiness, and Security & Safety lets.
Keep in mind that these figures are based on country wide data. Obviously, there is a huge variation within both countries based on demographics such as location and wealth.

As a Canadian, I can't help but notice Australia and Canada have a really great relationship. I think we both have great overall senses of humour about ourselves, and unique senses of outdoor adventure. I haven't been to Australia yet, but I can imagine it will feel like a home away from home. ❤️
Aussies have MORE fun !
@@maximillianvermontsuperbik2624 - Disagree.
Yeah there definitely is a pretty decent link between the two countries for sure. I am a citizen/resident of both, and the way I compare is that one is a wintery mountain and lake version, the other is a summery and beachy version of each other (obviously with a few extra quirks, but in generalized terms).
@user-lj7dh8lt3v which city? There should be jobs, but in Aus finding jobs isn't a quick process.
No jobs in Melbourne l have been applying for thousands of jobs

I don’t understand why people dish Canada for its weather. I love the variations of the weather here. Summers are awesome for barbeques, boating, hiking etc. then you get fall & the colours turn soo pretty everywhere. Then the winter arrives with snow and makes the place a winter wonderland! Enjoy skiing, ice skating, snowball fights. Then you have spring with flowers blooming everywhere, sakura, tulip festivals. You also have the US & Mexico relatively closeby to enjoy beaches if you want. I just Love Canada!

Pre-covid, I managed a shop down the street from a cafe that had 2 Aussie staff, working in Canada on a 2year visa. Winter came and when it hit -30c, they were the ones who were loving the cold and designated themselves the cafe’s neighbourhood outdoor errand runners. One thing some people may not think about is weather. I'm an Aussie who's just returned to Australia after living in northern Europe (including Russia) for the past 16 years. I've returned just prior to the Australian summer and I have to say the heat is just killing me. I'd much prefer a Canadian winter to an Australian summer.
Wow. That must really be fun without some form of air-con. Do you sleep OK?
@@lesskeels3417 There are air-cons? Lots of them.
I agree. The heat is too much. I am fine with the coldness in winters. Easier to rug up or get moving to warm up, than to try to cool down. When people say "aircon", yeah sure, but I could also say "heaters". You don't want to be relegated to an indoor airconditioned room for the summer.
As a Canadian, I'd say both places sound fairly similar, with one important caveat: weather. I personally cannot stand temperatures above 22 Celsius, and the 2-3 months of summer we get up here are already too much for me. So yeah, I think I'll stay put!

I'm a Canadian who grew-up travelling a lot and has visited many countries as an adult as well, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The only place I can imagine living is Australia and it is one of my favourite places I've visited. I am not surprised at all of how similarly we scored. The only thing about Aus that makes me hesitant is it seems more socially conservative and not as accepting of different-looking people from around the world.
I think that’s improving
@@stussysinglet Cool!
tbh, i think you completely missed the mark with this one, considering sydney is in the top ten for most racially diverse cities in the world. plus its extremely lingistically diverse. you see lots of bilingual signs in chinese and english. plus atleast from what ive seen most recently in the city is that theres still alot of new chinese businesses moving into sydney. i would say that, we arent as accepting of specific groups not because we have anything against them but overall are more cautious and definetly prefer to have students and highly trained foreigners move to australia rather than low wage, low skilled workers.
@@slicer2938 I appreciate and understand your POV, but being diverse (I won't apply the term "race" to people), isn't a helpful measuring stick. You can go to NYC or Los Angeles and see lots and lots of "diversity," but the other part of that same story is segregation. A more extreme example is apartheid Cape Town was very diverse! But.... well, ya know... As for Seydney, diverse, again that's more about numbers, but it is still very conformist to the dominanat WASPy-Aussie mode of being and there are stiil lots of terms and things said out loud that make me cringe a bit. But this is just my opnion. And Like I've said , I do love Oz and Aussies.
@@slicer2938 Funny, this just came up on another thread, make what you will of these numbers. If we look at some of teh NAMES of Federal Cabinets of each country:
CURRENT CANADIAN CABINET (pretty standrad for Canada) (of 39)
Kamal Khera (Seniors)
Omar Alghabra (Transportation)
Anita Anand (Defence)
Mary Ng (International Trade; Business Developmet)
Pablo Rodriguez (Heritage; Quebec)
Ahmed Hussen (Housing; Multiculturalism)
Harjit S. Sajjan (International Developmet; Pacific Trade)
There are other Ministers of colour (but their names wouldn't show that). And or Governor General is Her Exelency Ningiukudluk. (She is Quebec Inuit)
CURRENT CABINET OF AUSTRALIA (of 23)
Penny Wong (Foreign Affairs)

I pick the cold
Read the comments here and everybody equates Canada with Edmonton. I live in Southern Ontario where it has been 28-35C and super humid for the last 3 months. We might get 4 or 5 notable snow storms in a year...its not a desert here but it certainly not cold all the time...

I have been to Canada. A very awesome country.
Nice. Have you been to Australia just out of curiosity? What country do you live in?
@@theassortedchannel2944 Never been to Australia.

Unemployment rates aren't always a good gauge as the calculations aren't uniform across countries. In the US, for instance, its far harder to be counted as unemployed than in Canada. A general rule of thumb is to take one percentage point off a Canadian rate when comparing it to the US rate, for instance. I'm not sure about Canada vs Australia but I'd suggest using the 'Employment Rate' instead. It calculates what % of the working age population is working. Overall, your analysis is very good though.
I'm amazed at how similar both countries are. I would prefer the weather in Oz, but it's a little isolated down there. Canada has cooler weather in winter, but you can just hop in a car and drive to other countries - main place is USA but also Mexico, Central America, or go sailing in the Gulf to Barbados, Cuba, Turks and Caicos, Bahamas etc. I suppose you can go sailing from Oz too though. Yeah, amazingly similar. I would like to go to Oz and tour it on a motorcycle or something for fun. I've already done most of Canada - it's quite an adventure. But what's really amazing is that Canadians and Australians can just hop on a plane and visit each other easily and we speak the same language. Sort of took all that for granted.
We spend weekends in Asia like Bali, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam. Airfare from Sydney can be as low as $200 roundtrip on offpeaks. A little over when peak. And also don't forget New Zealand is in our backyard too.
If you are after cruise, famous cheap packages from Australia are south pacific like Fiji, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and tens of other tiny dots islands. All major cruise liners are represented here.
Canada is only close to the US and it's far from every other country in the world. Australia has all of Asia on top of it hence why Australia gets the millionaire migration. Australia also falls under Asia's time zone, which makes it a better choice for international students since nearly all of them come from Asia. Australia is much closer to them than Canada.
If you're from Europe choose Canada and if you're from Asia choose Australia.
From what i gather from this video. Both countries are pretty great
In Australia you 🥵 in Canada you 🥶. So basically in Australia you burn, in Canada you freeze. Which one would you prefer?
I have lived long term in both countries. Originally born in the UK and now living in Australia for over 30 years. Both great countries but I give the slight edge to Canada. Mainly because Australia is quite isolated from the rest of world and thus believes itself to the best at a lot of things where most Aussies have no experience of other nations. Canada being next door to U.S. is more aware of their position in the world. I also miss the changing of the seasons. Australia pretty much has 8 months of the year with quite hot summers with winters Canadians would call spring weather. Of course being a large country this can vary. Only an opinion though as no problems in residing in either country.
Obviously you've never been to the mountain regions of Australia that's where you'll get UK and Canada like winter as Australia does get snow actually the Australian Alps gets more snow then the Swiss Alps
@@adambrock3932 Good points. However in comparison to Canada these Australian mountain regions are so very tiny.

I fully understand you love Australia and with good reason. But please forgive me for preferring Canada's climate. I would definitely go back if my wife and children would let me but I am simply out numbered by Aussies. Ice Hockey, snow at Xmas, Gridiron, hunting. fresh water fishing, etc. are in my DNA. So in summary we are talking about choice and our choices are clearly different. Enough said.
@@garyfleming5156 um try the snowy mountains for 1 perisher Valley is another obviously you're not looking hard enough and every year Stanthorpe in Queensland also gets a light dusting of snow because of the Antarctic blast
This was a good video - thank you. The whole comparison is very subjective once you step away from the stats. Some people like the cold, some people like the beach etc. Im an aussie who has lived in Canada (Alberta) for the last 11 years. Im planning to move back to oz in a few years with my wife and 2 young kids - my 2 main reasons are that the winter here is tooooo looooong and the primary/secondary school system here is not as good as Australia (in our opinion). Theyre both good countries to live in and you cant go too wrong choosing to live in either. One other observation is that Aussies are less forgiving and expect more of staff or co-workers in the workplace - this is sometimes a good thing, sometimes not - depends which side of the situation you find yourself in.

I've never been to Australia, but I read online that we have comparable economies. The perk about Canada that I like is that we have a lot of fresh water and resources, and we have a strong relationship with the United States. I just crossed the bridge last week into Niagara falls, NY.
Practically the same as Aus
Australia has the second biggest diamond mines in the world.
We don't ran out of fresh water. Plus we have thousands of world class beaches. Just google "how many beaches in Sydney" and will tell you over 100! move to the Cariboo - we didn't get snow until just before Xmas and that will be gone by April
It depends on the person's ability to like or handle snow. If you want to work outside all year and not deal with snow: pick Australia. If you love snow and work inside then Canada. As a Canadian, I'd say that Australia is better.
arielzors So you’d pick warm weather over a self sustaining country? Australia is hella expensive and all the BS of “oh we get paid more” is crap. Higher minimum wage=high cost of living. Canada IS the superior country
Manny Pacquiao & Amir Khan I have nothing against Australia, all of my family lives there and I would love to see the country grow more. But the false narrative where Australia is better when it’s clearly a lie and not based on facts is what gets under my skin. In many ways, Australia will not be able to compete with Canada because of the sheer mass of land that we have. Canada is one of the largest agricultural producers and exporters in the world. We have been importing wheat to Australia since May. But we don’t talk about these things and grow in the quiet.
@@2bit156 Australia has a higher wage / Gdp per capita / Life Expectancy etc. ofc it can "compete"

I have lived in Canada, the UK and Australia, all arr great countries and are better than each other at different things. Overall I must say I enjoyed living in canada the most. So cheap, safe, clean, friendly people, great outdoors and i loved being able to drive to to America whenever I wanted. Also, the cold is pretty cool once you get used to it and get into the hockey and drinking culture! Australia had by far the best weather (Canada only gets nice weather like that for 4 months a year) and also aussies are cool people but I hated how isolated it felt and it kind of feels abit behind in some aspects. The UK was by far the most fun and lively country and had the best architecture but its expensive, wages are low and oppertunities are limited in most professions.
Very interesting summary. I agree about UK and Oz. Not lived in Canada but the ease of travelling to the USA would be a big plus for me.

@GoWestYoungMan I disagree. A lot of culture in Canada is influenced by the U.S and not "home grown". In my opinion. Also, the 2 most populated cities in Australia have very consistent, 4 season years. Both are home to mountain ranges with proficient skiing and winter sports.
@@tyronebronte9028 The assumption is that Canada's culture is 'American' but it's really a shared US-Canada culture that Canada has massively contributed to. Just look at one area, sports. Ice hockey, basketball, baseball, 'American Football',and lacrosse were all either invented by a Canadian or trace their origins/early development to Canada. US influence has been huge but Canada has more than pulled its own weight. Canadians have good reason to take ownership of this culture. When one talks of American culture/Canadian culture, we're really talking about the same thing.

Income tax is higher in Canada (keep in mind we pay federal +provincial tax) ends up pretty high compare to Australia (only federal tax).
That's what I was thinking. There's not a chance Aussies pay more taxes than Canadians.
Both countries have something to very proud of, and I'm sorry that you didn't mention it in the video. Both countries have unique nature that you can't find elsewhere, but I have to pick Ausie because they live longer, Hey 4 months, and that's the only thing that's definitely different. Ha ha ha.
Im born Canadian and live here too however my mother resides in Aussie land and i do have dual citizen ship ..
Been there few times and loved it since both countries share similar values and a way of life .. I do have the option to live there permanent .
One thing always gets me why do Aussies drive on the wrong side of the street while the majority of the world drives on the right side :P
Also their import vehicles such as F150 truck/ute will set you back 120k+ or a Chrysler 300C sedan 110k.. and in Canada 40-60k for the F150 and 25-45k for the sedan.
or a pair of Canadian Walmart 30$ jeans will set you 80$ in Australia..
In conclusion Australia is beautiful with their vast summer beaches and 2 yearly seasons and Canada is breathtaking all year round with its 4 seasons climate change.
It boils down to a individual preference ...
As for my self personally looking forward experiencing all weather season compared to other folks that only like hot/warm climate.
So who is better .. hard to says.. I prefer Canada over all..but will always visit Aussie land in reality i have it pretty good :P
Cheers
The expenses on clothes and cars mostly boils down to the fact that we are largely very seperated from those markets and don't have a sizeable population unlike North America which would keep costs lower. Overall income is a bit higher and in terms of the jeans, you can easily get cheap jeans from Kmart, Target, Big W (3 main cheap Dept stores) for $30 AUD. In saying that, I'm glad you liked Australia and every Canadian Ive ever mate have been great people
nicely put - the world need more people who think/speak as eloquently
Stratchona it’s the same way a Holden Ute is near 80k
And a Chrysler 300c doesn’t cost $110k what the fuck u on about
You forgetting the states doesn't have federal consumption tax and.australia has high federal consumption tax
$110000 is r/t plus package , 300c srt8 in Australia is $70000aud
Do one for New Zealand vs Australia!
Nameless CZcamsr There are already you tube videos on Australia vs New Zealand
I am indian. Which country should I prefer for master's i.e MBA. Canada or Australia 🦘??
I migrated to Australia 20 years ago. And I love Australia to the death. I believe Australia is the best country in the world to live. I love Australian way of life. People are so easy going, so friendly, so helpful.
@Canadian Best thing about Canada is its proximity to USA.
So I have heard. Enjoy your heaven.
It's Me
That's because you are white. lol
Love you Australia
So is. The best lifestyle. Fitness lifestyle! Greetings from Colombia soon from Australia!
After living in canada for 5 years, i had to move back to Australia its just more laid back and I feel happier even though a lot of my family was in canada
Zain Sadiq depends where you live in Canada. The east coast, although jobs are few and far, is exactly the same as what you would get in Australia, minus the weather. People there are friendly, you can leave your doors unlocked too and nobody will rob you. Although I wouldn’t try that in downtown Saint John, but other than that you’re fine
Obviously you’ve never been to Calgary or Victoria!
Education cost varies greatly across Canada... you have two nations within a country with very different values and societies
I'm a Canadian and I've lived 6 years in Australia. They are both great and I absolutely loved Australia. But in the end, I chose to come back to Canada as it's less isolated, is more diverse (seasons, culture, languages) and has a bit of a simpler way of life, somehow. Distances are shorter in cities, one can walk, bike and take public transport as things in, say, Montreal, Quebec, or Toronto are more clustered. I miss the weather, though!
Canada is only close to the US and it's far from every other country in the world.
Australia has all of Asia on top of it hence why Australia gets most millionaires moving into their country than any other in the world. Australia also falls under Asia's time zone, which makes it a better choice for international students since nearly all of them come from Asia and also makes business a lot easier.
Australia is much closer to them than Canada. Idk what you mean by isolation? Maybe you mean from your home country Canada? then yes
Let’s talk about the weather, the beaches and the coffee. 🙂
Yeah the beaches are beautiful af. Gone to surfers paradise?
@@eliassleiman8877 Sunshine Coast beats that 10 times lol
Bartolomeo Babbo Tofino beats both
Australia and NZ are my favourite places on earth
@Canadian that's an advantage
It is an advantage because since they are far from the world, there are lesser crime. So that no other countries can enter Australia or NZ by car and commit crimes there. However some people in different countries might take the plane and commit crimes there
@@ninjapirate123
Just because they are far doesn’t mean people can’t commit crimes.XD
NZ is about 1,000,000 times better than Australia: nicer and kinder weather, ditto the people, no endless deserts to circumnavigate, bilingual (English/Maori) no dangerous animals, beautiful scenery within an hour's drive or so, better internet, oh, and they play some darn good rugby as well.
Plz make a video on Australia vs USA... Prons & crons...with / without spouse visa....
If you gonna move... move to North America (USA or Canada). Australia sucks- am an American who visited both Canada & australia
Comparing Australia to USA??? ha ha ha If you gonna move, don't go to USA. Only people from third world countries love to live in USA.
Canada has public health care. Is this the same for Australia (it probably is based on taxes) but just want to be sure.
I’m Aussie living in Australia and I love my country. However, you’ll never hear me say a bad word about Canada. Beautiful place with beautiful people
Only to Trudeau, yes.
@OceanBlue nothing on this earth would persuade me to live in the USA. Who are the second class citizens now????
@OceanBlue US is first class country in cover-19 ha ha ha, a country that no free healthcare services, a country where its own citizens work 2 to 3 jobs just to survive. ENJOY your USA, because I am enjoying my Australia where I have 5 weeks paid vacation leave every year and 12 weeks paid long service leave after working the same company for 10 years, free healthcare when I go to my doctor and hospitals. Oh, I am enjoying clean public parks and clean trains. Oh your Amtrak trains so disgusting for so called rich USA. Lastly, its nice to walk around here in Australia without having homeless people in my eye sights.
@OceanBlue....you really are delusional. I feel so sorry for you
@OceanBlue
Excuse me?!
You forgot to count the forest fires, lots of bugs, and overall ravenous animals
From somebody who has been invited for an exploration to planet Mars, I would have to say: Why go to Mars when you have Australia? It’s just as isolated! Lol
I am from Montréal and one of my friend at work is Iranian. He told me that Canada and Australia was is 2 first choice for immegrat for all this reason. And the waiting time for accessibilite to immegrat and the cost was better with Canada.
When I think of Canada My heart cools down I wish to be there for ever.
The main point you didn't mention is harshness of weather in canada.
I agree, however Australia’s weather is too hot 🥵 🥵
Lol I don’t know which country
@@yuvikaasmr3236 its too hot but in the day and it is for 2 months only still u have morning and evng to enjoy
Well my country is ruined but id like to know wich place is more friendly with south americans? (Im argentinian).
Venezuelan/Canadian here. There's a larger Latino community here in Canada. People don't discriminate if you have an accent. I've heard Australians can be a bit racist if you're not a native anglophone. The weather in Australia is more similar to Argentina but overall Canada is better for our people 👍
@@josefmonagas3548 thank You friend for your reply! I Will keep your words in mind when i try yo get my visa. plus all is more expensive in Australia and thats something i may not afford at the beggining.
lol as a Canadian I've always wished I could be Australian. y'all are just so cool
Canada doesn't have lower wages. Just minimum wage is lower. So unless you work at mcdonalds you will see more of you money living in canada.
I have lived 25 years in canada and 15 in australia.
Love the weather in australia.
Way way cheaper to live in canada.
Jd and coke in sydney 13 bucks depends where you go
In canada 6 bucks.
b21141413 a registered nurse make $100k easy In Australia in Canada it’s half
You dnt know shit
A pharmacist earns $80k-$144k in Canada while Australia makes $67K
I agree with b21141413. The minimum wage is much lower $15/hour and Canada is way more cheaper and beautiful.
@@RxT7A Pharmacist in Australia starting salary (fresh from university) $75K. After 3 years that will jump to $90K.
I am really sensitive to heat and I prefer the cold so....
we have cold area in Australia I'm from ballarat and it get down to 3 degree in winter and 30 degree in summer but the average is about 26
How about weather???
Are you sure aus is only 15th in terms of house pricing
As a perfectly content Canadian - the only other countries I'd ever consider living in would be Australia or New Zealand.
you forgot to mention we have, Thor, Wolverine, Joker, Harley Queen while Canada has Justine Bieber xD
That's the gayest comment I've ever read. What are you, fifty?
Oh Bro, canadians have Jim Carrey
@@leoca8691 and so many more, it's just that no one really remembers all the true entertainers from Canada that sadly HAD to migrate to the US to further their careers o.0
Canada has Deadpool and John Wick
We have Ryan Reynolds nuff said.
If you are looking for a cheaper place to live you might want to go to canada but be ready for lots of snow. Australia has a warmer climate and depending where you are has some large bugs that get into your home. If you live in a city you will see these less though. Canada and Australia have universal health care and both countries are great options
Depends whether you prefer freezing or frying.
Depends whether you prefer temperate or frying.
Both countries have a lot in common. Both are friendly until you really piss them off.
Nah, I'm from Europe and I'm living in Australia, poeple treat us like crap either way doesn't matter if your nice or not and that's what rlly pisses me off
Canada= nicer people
Please do Ireland vs UK!
Its Ireland by far....not even worth comparing, England is shite
@OceanBlue which is the best out of all these countries
Ireland is a shit hole
Sundayschoolsong
Ireland. Is this even a debate? Ireland was better even before Brexit, but Brexit solidified the UK's status as dumbest country in Europe.
What is the freezing to death rate in Canada?
Protective wear...jackets, hats, gloves, scarfs
I think 2 other factors are important, weather and location.
If you like year-round warm weather Australia clearly wins but if you like cold weather or seasons that are cold & hot, Canada wins. Also Australia's location is much more isolated, so if you love to travel, Canada is much closer to everything. You can get to many great cities in 1 to 6 hours for New York or London. So if you hate being isolated downunder, Canada is the better connected choice.
All this being said, it's amazing how similar Canada and Australia are. They both are great places to live in or travel to. I think both countries are very lucky!
Canada is only close to the US and it's far from every other country in the world.
