Installing an inboard motor in a small boat update 6 of 13

  • Since I got the Atomic 4 bolted in, and the shaft and propeller are installed, I decided to test run this rig on the trailer. You will notice I put the top on, and this is so I don't fall out of the boat. I had to mess with a dead battery, and I had a small water leak in the exhaust, but otherwise it seemed to work fine.
    There is a minute or so of wonderful views of the grass. One of these happened when I forgot to turn the water on and the water pump was sucking air.

    That was absolutely awesome!! I am on 6 of 13, and just had to comment as I go on to watch the next video. You never cease to amaze me with your talents.

      +sunrise 13 Thanks Sunrise. You are too kind. Sorry about the poor sound.
      Working on boats is kind of fiddly and hard to make interesting. It is one big project, all linked together, and all progressing too slowly. But I am sure glad you like the boat videos. I was hoping for more views on these boat videos, as it is a very very unique project. As a matter of fact, don't recall ever seeing such a thing on CZcams. Maybe the boat videos will be discovered by the small boat guys someday.
      But who cares right. I'm fine, as long as I have you and the rest of my Memphis Monday viewers.

      +Memphis Applegate Make the title..."making a homemade boat" or something people would will be looking for. People will put in building boats and I think you would get more views. How about "building a homemade boat with an inboard motor?" Just my two cents worth. I just know the more words in the title, people will have a better chance of having yours show up first when searching videos. I absolutely love your videos, people are missing out on it though. Its a shame.

    It sounded great! I hope this series of videos culminates with you putting the "African Queen" in the water.

      +Pidasian Hippie Later we get in the water plenty. Thinking about a Memphis Monday episode documenting some future voyage of the African Queen. What do you think?
      I love that movie. Think I have most of the dialog memorize. Hepburn and Bogy. He won "Best Actor" that year of his role, but I think Hepburn carried the movie, and she should have won.

      ***** I think it would be a great segment of Memphis Monday. I hate to admit that I have only seen the movie once. Maybe that needs to be put on my todo list. I did enjoy the movie. They were both great in it, but I agree that Audrey Hepburn was outstanding in it. It was, unfortunately, a time that women were not appreciated as much in Hollywood.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  Před 8 lety +1

      +Pidasian Hippie Finally we disagree, sort of. Katherine Hepburn, not Audrey Hepburn!!! Okay, I'm over the "bowel" episode now.
      Katherine was nominated 12 times as "Best Actress," a record that will probably stand forever. She won the award four times, another record unlikely to be broken. But Bogy, who was getting old at the time, had never won an Oscar, so I think the Academy made up for their mistake.
      Your point about women not being appreciated is well taken, but stand-by for Katherine. She was the most independent, outspoken, no-nonsense person ever. Check out some interviews with her. I'm not sure she cared at all about being appreciated, or fitting in, or conforming; Katherine was a free spirit who defined the new improved role of women in Hollywood, and in the broader sense, all of our society.
      Katherine Hepburn, yep, I liked her a lot.

      ***** Ummmm....Would you believe me if I said that I purposely used Audrey instead of Katherine to make you feel better about the "Bowel" incident? I didn't think so. Actually, when I was typing that, I was thinking that Audrey was the dark haired actress who played in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but could not come up with Katherine's name so I thought it must be right. She was a great role model for women even as she was in her later years. I hate to admit that my first exposure to her was Rooster Cogburn. I have seen some interviews with her after she was older. I didn't realize she had won that many Academy Awards. Now you have me hankering to watch a few old movies this weekend.

    so why were you running the drive system without water ??

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  Před 10 lety

      Probably because I'm an amateur. I read a caution somewhere to limit the time the strut bearing and packing gland are run dry. Of course that is common sense, as both of these bearings/seals are lubricated and cooled by water. Mindful of this, I limited the waterless run time to a couple of minutes.
      Fact is that before I built this rig I didn't know what a packing gland and strut bearing were. I'm not even a big boater, rather I built this thing as a fun "project."
      If you are an expert or even conversant on inboard powered small boats, I'd love to get your feedback on the thing.

    Wooden motor mounts no good your shaft alignment has to be within .003thousand or it will ruin tranny and shaft

    Looks like you got way too much distance between your prop and cutlass bearing. Should be about one and a half times the diameter of the shaft.

      +Mazda rx7 Thanks for the input. Wish you were around while I was rigging this thing. I will check this out.

      +Mazda rx7 Thanks again!!! Just checked this out, and you are so right!!! I actually bought a new shaft because of the vibrations I was getting. Nobody else but you have pointed this problem out, and I'm sure glad you did.
      If you get a chance to watch any of my other boat videos, I'll be standing by for more good input. I went into this adventure totally green. I didn't even know what a cutlass bearing was. Got lots of great feedback, but again, nobody caught this error but you. Thanks.

      I'll take a look at the res if the set up, BTW ther is a maximum angle you can set that motor at or it will through off the carb float or starve it of oil

    • @mazdarx7887
      @mazdarx7887 Před 8 lety

      Just looked it up the absolute maximum mounting angle for a an Universal Atomic 4is 15 degrees (that is measured with boat sitting in water with normal load) Most engines will be the same.Remember that the boat may have a bow up angle while running, therefor a 15 degree angle will be greatly exceeded while running, hence engine failure.
      I have never done it myself but I have heard of guys machine and install a car CV joint to get the engine more level .

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  Před 8 lety

      Mazda rx7 I'm at 14 degrees, so it sounds like I need a CV joint. I'm not really a boater or fisherman, I'm a woodworker, and I love mechanical problems. This whole thing has been a "project" for me; a course in small boat marine engineering. I think that you are the guy I wished would chime in three years ago.
      I was going to sell the boat, but with all this new work to do, that doesn't seem ethical. Stand by for many Memphis Monday videos incorporating Mazda RX7 inputs.

      "The only word I can find so far for engine install on your tube is PATHETIC, long winded and nothing learned."
      Such a comment could only be made by a person who has no videos. Am I right? Pretty much always right about that, as these kinds of comments are almost always anonymous; always from keyboard warriors who don't create content, and don't have a clue about making videos.
      Unless you have content of your own, then your criticism is meaningless; and you courage is suspect.
      Crank out that video camera and show us how it's done. But you won't.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  Před 6 lety

      No, it is installed correctly, but we do discover later in the series that it is way too big. I kind of suspected it was too big, so I had the correct size prop ready to change it out.
      I have since this video rebuilt the boat again (some recent videos on it), but I'm not a boater or fisherman, rather I think I work on this boat as a woodworking project.
      Thanks for the view and the comment.
