Palpatine's blank stare and "you seem agitated" line become even funnier when you realise Vader probably was ranting like this for the past eight minutes.
Palpatine: Dammit Vader I'm in the middle of a meeting and you call me just to rant about your ex master?!
@@elmiau4225 They should have had Seth MacFarlane's Robot Chicken Palpatine play this scene... Go for Papa Palpatine!
The image of that is fucking hysterical!
Eight minutes? We’re talking an hour at least.
I believe there have been a few moments in Legends comics where Palpatine has said to him "Will you shut the fuck up about Obi-Wan?!"
I love how Ian McDiarmid modulates his voice and makes it much deeper to show the parts where the emperor is very serious
I've always seen that deep growling voice as the actual Sidious persona, when Sidious is tired of keeping up the Palpatine façade and needs to hammer a point home. You can pretty much hear Vader do a **gulp** when Sidious says "I wonder... if your thoughts *_are clear on this, Lord Vader._* " because he knows he's dangerously close to pissing off someone that can wipe the floor with him, and has no compunctions towards killing him and choosing a more worthy Apprentice.

Darth Sidious: Lord Vader, have you dealt with the Rebels in the Lothal system?
Darth Vader: Yes Master, they are broken.
Darth Sidious: And yet I sense something more to your victory.

Darth Vader: It was here
Darth Sidious: This is an opportunity not let pass Skywalker’s apprentice cloud lead to other lost Jedi.

Darth Sidious: Perhaps, if he lives, be patient my old friend, for now dispatch another Inquisitor to hunt them down!
Darth Vader: As you wish, my master.
@@speedracer2008Yeah, Vader backed down immediately in the face of that reproach. He was powerful and pretty much fearless, but he knew better than to provoke the Emperor’s displeasure.
In this scene, Palpatine starts out in his almost kind, fatherly voice. But every word grows progressively more serious and threatening and the evil shows in his face when he threatens Vader. Then when Vader gets the hint Palpatine becomes the satisfied father figure. Ian is just amazing.
Agreed. I love how it slowly becomes more like that gruttal we all know and love
I kinda wish we had that in rise of skywalker when he talks to Rey
@@mediakira6621 ROS was so confused. One minute he wants to kill Rey, the next he wants her to succeed him. Personally, I think Palpatine would have used his kindly father routine because he would have preferred a blood descendant to follow him.
Great breakdown, I started noticing every time Palpatine says “Friend” to Vader it’s almost in a demeaning and sarcastic way as if he is trying to degrade Vader.
In a way Vader is his son.
@@marial8235 Palpatine is a psychopath and a liar, so him switching to a father figure when confronted by Rey directly and personally is kinda on brand as he also most likely is a coward especially when in his half alive state and he is willing to discard her again once he believed he became God. I mean he literally murdered his only son just so he could get her to experiment on.... There's no real confusion when you think of it. To be honest he never wanted Rey as his granddaughter he only viewed her as either material or a vessel for himself as such having her killed by Kylo Ren would benefit him as he could than transfer his soul to the body or use her in some way to create a better vessel for himself, and when confronted he merely tried to trick her into initiating the ritual herself, so there's really nothing confusing about his behaviour through out the movie if you think about it, even though it looks like his goals are inconsistent with each other it's not really the case if you understand Sidious.
It's crazy how you can tell as vader got older his anger and aggression turned into silence but here as a young vader he's furious and filled with Hate in his voice
Keep in mind that this is more then likely at least 10 years after revenge of the Sith because of Luke is at a least 10 or 11 in that scene .
And it’s shown earlier when he force chokes the inquisitor for letting Obi Wan escape, moving a lot faster than he normally does and raising his voice.

I love how SIdious very subtly threatens Vader, all he has to do is lower his voice and suggest Vader is weak, and Vader gets the point straight away. When Vader later tells Luke "You don't know the power of the Dark Side.. I MUST obey my master" you can see he means it.
“Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor, or suffer your father’s fate you will”

I noticed Palpatine's eyes widened up at 0:50 , it was such a terrifying expression, clearly as a warning for Vader to fall in line.
Thank you. Glad I was not the only one to have noticed that.
So subtle, yet so important. Vader knows and feels every small que from his master.
Ian McDiarmid is such a good actor.
I didn’t know that! That is a way to pull on Vader’s leash when he gets out of line!
Which is why Vader hated the inquisitors
“Dammit Vader, you woke me up at 3am for this shit? Y’know what? Ok. I get it. He was your master, he kicked your ass, took your saber- I get it. But understand this; we’ve got bigger things to worry about. And I’m not pissing away millions of credits into manpower and heavy artillery just so you can settle a grudge from 10 years ago. This was the perfect moment to use an iconic theme like this.
It was to show that the completely psychotic and obsessed Vader is gone as he officially became the Vader from ANH.
I was more happy hearing the imperial march than I was seeing palpatine
The imperial march is in a minor key genius
@@FatGuyReviews.935 read to comprehend, not to respond smart ass. I clearly wrote and I quote "a remix in minor tone" just because it's already in minor key doesn't mean that there can't be variations, how did everyone else who liked the comment understand this but you didn't?
Palpatine is realizing: “shit he really cared about this dude…imagine if that kid(s) of his survived.”
"Vader, my dude...give it a rest."
I think this may be a fun theory: Vader's desire to continue hunting down Obi-Wan and fight and "destroy" him isn't literally an attempt at revenge, it's a subconscious cry for help. In continuing to chase down Obi-Wan, a deeply buried fraction of the old Anakin hopes that Obi-Wan might somehow 'safe' him.. Vader interprets this cry for help as pure hate and acts upon that. Ofcourse, Emperor Palpatine senses all this, which is why he orders Darth Vader to stay away from Obi-Wan.
Its very sad if you look at it like this. Obi-Wan 'gave up' on Anakin and his new master orders him to stay away from him, he is not even allowed to hate and destroy Obi-Wan even more which truly eliminates the last link to his old master (until he finds out he has a son, of course). The dark side has truly imprisoned Anakin.
This is a sound theory, and aligns closely with the theory that Anakin suffers from borderline personality disorder. In episode III, Anakin was not first to draw his lightsaber. He was hoping that Obi-wan would choose loyalty to him over his loyalty to the jedi, and does not consider Obi-wan an enemy until Obi-wan makes it clear he stands against Anakin. In this series, he is relentless in his pursuit of Obi-wan, but never finishes the job despite clearly being within his power to do so. He is trapped in a conflicting pattern of wanting to draw Obi-wan in and wanting to push him away, as is the case with borderline individuals. Borderline individuals suffer from a tendency to feel abandoned, and struggle to find stability in close relationships. It is clear to me that his anger towards Obi-wan is not from his past defeats, but from feeling abandoned by his master when he needed him most. And he continually seeks Obi-wan in the hopes that he will one day choose loyalty to his friend and not abandon him again. But at the same time he does not feel worthy of salvation for what he has done, and is unable to reach out directly himself for help. Instead he continually punishes himself, and a symptom of this self loathing is the need to destroy everything around him that reminds him of his past self.
@@TheFukkles I like your answer as well as the original comment so much, that both comments give comfort to me, making me truly feel connected in the ways of thinking, and show me that I am not alone in this universe. I genuinely hope you two will have happy lifes (I usually don't wish this to anyone on youtube).
His armor is his prison. Obi Wan could have ended his misery, but he spared him because he is suffering more alive. Probably some part of Vader wants death because this power didn't gave him anything.
It's interesting, but impossible, as anakin Skywalker doesn't exist at all, Darth Vader is pure evil, and only finds light when his son brings him hope again

That's master acting right there. You don't have to say or do much, but EVERYONE gets the message when you're in the room. Everyone knows exactly how your character is feeling and how to react.
This scene is a nice finish, it's a nice reminder for both Vader AND the viewers as to who's REALLY running the show.
Anakin really got caught up in something he shouldn’t have and I’m sure wishes he hadn’t. This is the Emperor Palpatine show.
I bet Anakin would admit the Jedi were actually ok compared to Palpatine.
@@Brownie-tg3nu Karmic isn't it, he was liberated from slavery by the Jedi and in destroying them he finds himself a slave again to a much WORSE master.
Didn’t realize but he asks Vader the same question in ROTJ when Vader tells the emperor Luke is on Endor when even he admits he couldn’t sense Luke there. “I wonder if your feelings on this matter are clear.”
Palpatine knows a threat when he sees it. If Obi-Wan can turn Vader back to the good side, he’s fucked. If Obi-Wan kills Vader, he’s fucked. Hence why he wanted Luke to take his father’s place because if Luke and Vader had teamed up, he’d be fucked.
I like the idea that Vader has been rambling for hours without letting Palpatine get a word in edgeways. Makes Palpatine's line seems so very deliciously sarcastic.

That soundtrack will never get old. No matter what.
0:33 that voice gives me chills, the way Ian drops it and gives it that effect 😱
He’s amazing for this role. Brilliantly done
He went from the more grandfatherly tone to the Sith tone. This was him reminding Vader who is apprentice and who is master, merely with his tone of voice. Ian is the one and only Palpatine.
This scene is exactly why Palpatine is a villain on a scale that is difficult to wrap your head around in a nutshell. Not only is it the fact that he brings the most feared man in the galaxy to heel in seconds with a little bit of faux concern, it is the fact he does it for showing that he has any semblance of an independent personality outside of being his slave. Not insubordination. Simply being a person who might have anything in his life that is not serving him 24/7. A mistake that is punishable by death.
Also, it serves to remind of how every single last event in the Star Wars universe only happens as part of a grand conspiracy set in motion by Palpatine. Every scene, every line, every movie, every TV show, every tear, every laugh, every love, every loss, every conversation, every last iota of this entire series has Palpatine's galactic ambition as the prime causal factor shaping its context.
What a character.
It was in palpatines scheme to get luke to kiss his sister

By this scene Palpatine’s spies have probably informed him of Vader’s near death yet again by Kenobi. Sidious realize Kenobi is not likely to attack him and is likely to kill Vader. He still needs Vader. Palpatine still has enemies to find and destroy.

And Vader understands that Palpatine will kill him if he’s no longer useful, and if Vader dies then he can’t bring back Padme, which is the only thing that motivates him to live.

Something I just realized - this episode marks the return of both Qui-Gon and Palpatine. Both appear as light blue apparitions. And yet one appears using technological means, while the other appears via spiritual means. I think this does a great job of highlighting the contrasts of both characters - while they both serve separately as mentors to the protagonist and antagonist, the medium by which they appear also emphasizes the Sith fixation on material power, technology, and wealth, and the Jedi's deeper connection to the spiritual aspects of the Force.

No smirking, no cackling, no condescending wisdom, he changes the pitch of his voice and just dead serious.
Seeing Ian now as Palpatine felt so much better than in the sequels. Now he's got actual reasons to appear. He plays the evil manipulator so well.
In both the series, films and audiovisual content of the saga, the relationship between Vader and Palpatine seems pleasant and one could even say that they are friends. But when you read the comics you realize how cruel Palpatine was to him all that time and manipulated him.
Is it only me or to someone else the fact that Vader sits comfy in his throne while speaking to Palpatine feels wrong. I understand when he speaks to Reeva - he is the boss, he towers over her and she is a small hologram. But when he speaks to the Emperor it should be much bigger hologram to emphasize their dynamic (calling Vader his friend would have played a bit different) and Vader should also be kneeled

@@fixipszikon6670 key word being republic. There isn’t one by the time this scene takes place. It’s an empire now and a single Jedi isn’t a threat in his eyes. Indeed it wasn’t until Luke that an actual threat appeared.
@@fixipszikon6670 Palpatine scolding Vader for his continued focus on Jedi is nothing new, even in legends lmao
@@debutriah2854
Thats fine. "lmao" makes you just another fan of stupid "legends/eu" and comics, that contradict somehow the 6 Lucas movies.
Also, no contradiction can be erased or justified as a non-contradiction, by using another contradicting crap, as an example.
So the fact still remains, it is crap.
@@fixipszikon6670 ok?
Damn dude, get some furniture and a couple paintings.
I serve only you my master. That line is so cool
People complained about the imperial March not being used while the episodes were airing but it hit so much harder in this scene since it wasn't used before.
“Lord Vader, I know you know we don’t have time for this shit.”
0:08 Rebels season 2 synced with Kenobi
Darth Sidious: Lord Vader, have you dealt with the Rebels in the Lothal system?
Darth Vader: Yes Master, they are broken.
Darth Sidious: And yet I sense something more to your victory.
Darth Vader: I believe the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker lives and in League with these Rebels.
Darth Sidious: Are you certain?
Darth Vader: It was here
Darth Sidious: This is an opportunity not let pass Skywalker’s apprentice cloud lead to other lost Jedi.
Darth Vader: Such as Kenobi.
Darth Sidious: Perhaps, if he lives, be patient my old friend, for now dispatch another Inquisitor to hunt them down!
Darth Vader: As you wish, my master.
Lucasfilm has been doing Vader so much justice over the years. Love to see it.
Ian makes this character so great with his tone of voice
The emperor here is more menacing than all of Rise of Skywalker!
There’s a big part of me which refuses to recognize Episodes 8 and 9 as canon. The former blatantly refuses to keep the saga’s story coherent, and the latter tries and fails miserably at damage control.
That same big part of me also refuses to recognize as canon any media which exists solely to justify the absurd plot points of those two episodes.
Hopefully we one day we see Episodes 8 and 9 retconned and have the saga ended properly. They even have a method to justify such a retcon, thanks to Rebels.

@@jameskardys3452 I would rather have the Yuuzhan Vong invasion over the 'sequels'.
@@jameskardys3452 Precisely how I feel about Rings of Power
Vader: *going on a tirade for 20 looong minutes about how he should have beaten Obi Wan*
Sidious: lol you seem mad bro
This was a great scene
I dont think the emperor was telling vader to calm down like he cared about him, he was telling him "calm down or else even you in all your power can be replaced" and good thing vader got the mesage.
Palpatine: "Mate, calm down."
Before this series I wasn't quite capable of picturing Christensen's Anakin under that mask. Too many differences in the voice. Now I can.
I Love Darth Vader ❤️
The best scene in the whole series.
This scene is great, because at 0:48 You could feel that Sidious was gonna give Vader the Dooku treatment, the force choke from half a galaxy away treatment, but Vader did say the right words which leads to 0:58 which you can see Sidious nodding as if Vader passed the vibe check.
Ian McDiarmid is a gift to the Star Wars universe and we should all be thankful
