This is how I usually play. I mean I can see the opposition pieces but I have no idea what's going on.

This game is hardly possible without a computer. Perhaps it can be simulated with board and real pieces, if you have two boards and a neutral arbiter. Even then, it loses its dynamics.

Hikaru sure spends a lot of time saying "I basically knew where all your pieces were" but then upon Gotham suggesting a move "but I didn't know where your pieces were".

I'm noticing Hikaru does that a _lot._ Even when it came to something trivial like learning the rules of 5D chess, he insists that he completely understands everything in front of him when chat is pointing out he plainly doesn't. He's an incurable know-it-all.
@@Princess_Ruto Oh, god. I watched that video because I desperately want to see a GM who actually knows the rules of 5D chess play it, to really see what some one *good* at chess play 5D chess well. But I was so sorely disappointed and frustrated. Like, I've seen other play 5D chess and pick up the rules pretty quickly and fully understand them, but then those people are so frustrating to watch because they're just so bad at regular chess so that even if they know what the rules are they just constantly miss super obvious problems that are gonna happen in just 1 move. I just want to see some one play 5D chess well.

@@Princess_Ruto it's definitely not a good thing but I can see where it comes from mentally, when you're so good at something that you can be considered one of the few top players, subconsciously you'd like to think you know everything, "why else would I be one of the best if I don't know it all?" Can go through your mind. Not saying it's a good thing ofc, just saying it's understandable how he got to this point.
The more I observe Hikaru the more I become convinced he is just on the autism spectrum to some degree, what they used to call Aspergers. A lot of his actions come off as him being an insufferable know it all, and maybe he is, but really I think he just doesn't understand social graces.

2 boards. Each player only sees one and his pieces on it. 3rd party person adds pieces of opposing side which should be seen.

Can we please see some engines play this version? I'd love to see computers devise the least calculate-able openings where half the game is not verses bot deliberately trying to hide their pieces.
I think they’d break. The way they calculate where to move is by seeing where the opponent’s pieces are. Without being able to see, I don’t think they’d be able to move at all

That would be fun to program. Traditional and even variants like crazyhouse have perfect information. An engine for fog of war would need to use probabilities and focus more on risk trade offs versus ply depth.

JediNxf7 in the fog of war variant there is no check, you have to actually take the king
@JediNxf7 except you can see your own pieces in fog of war, so that's not really a FoW blunder but just mouse slip blunder, which means you're playing a combination of two variants anyway.
Guys it was black's turn to move. Levy just made a pre-move. He didn't miss capture the King.
Although Hikaru left his king hanging for lols Levi had already made the premove he assumed that Hikaru would save his King.

my friend did programming in uni and made exactly this mode in 2009, and he got a C. I know he didn't invent the mode, but I thought it was worth a lot more way back then
It's a good idea, but on top of normal chess it's not too difficult to implement programming wise
perhaps not, but he coded the chess as well. Didn't start with a template or anything

Fog of War is my favourite variant for basically the sole reason that I, someone rated 1000 in online Blitz and doesn’t even have an OTB rating, once beat a Candidate Master rated 2269 OTB

This is an interesting game mode. Ties into real life strategy where you don’t have 100% info on the enemies movements
Yes, "fog of war" originally comes from real time strategy games like Age of Empires or Command and Conquer as well as turn-based ones like the Civilization series and that is exactly what it is meant to represent. In those games you often have to send scout units into enemy territory to get an idea of what army they're making or how they are developing economically and whether you're ahead or behind them.

GM Hikaru FoW Chess insight: If somebody offers a queen trade, take it! You get to see a ton of their pieces, and they get none. Offensive trading in general will net you information! Very neat.

It would be fun if super GM's played this variant and after 15 or so moves tried guessing where the opponent's pieces(battleship style)..

I think this variant is really poetic. In war , armies have incomplete information about their opponents. And have to find out the position of enemy base camps. I think this variant simulates that scenario so well. Really cool stuff !!
Real war doesn't have "base camps". I have no idea where you are getting your ideas about war from... computer games maybe?
@@jrd33 Lol , wars don't have base camps ? They absolutely do. Generals would send batallions or some special units to specific positions in the enemy territory for variety of reasons like conducting a surprise raid , distraction , or maybe reporting enemy positions back to the headquarters. It's basic war tactics which have been employed throughout history in wars. And I found this variant of the game somewhat simulating that.
I don't know, in war you do reconnaissance by sending out scouts or by other covert means, not by just putting your unit somewhere and hoping that you're not walking into a trap. Both in ancient and in modern times, commanders usually have a pretty good idea of the enemy forces before engaging in battle. Obviously there are ambushes and stuff like that but most of the time, war is more similar to regular chess where you know what the other side is doing.

Because Levi could of won the game by taking the king with the rook. But he retreats the rook. Hikari knew he dodged a bullet and is a bit dumbfounded by Levi, but doesn't say anything to not give anything away.

This turns the game into something like StarCraft where using cheap units (pawns) to scout and get a read on openers (build openers). This is so great!

This is so awesome of a game mode variant -- I was LITERALLY just thinking about this concept a couple weeks ago and thought how it would be such a cool tactical style of chess that made it almost like a war, where information and maximizing the control of your pieces is key
This is super interesting. I think this is more fun to watch than normal chess.
I can already imagine the level of pre-moving damage to vision in this mode to avoid gambits for vision

Hikaru didn't even know that you can check the squares in front of pawn to see if there's anything in front of it by seeing if you can even move it there as legal move. Hikaru trying to come up with all these complex strategies but is beaten due to not knowing basic game play functions on how to receive information about the board.
Levy's a kind gentleman, not calling out Hikaru's ego. Good sportsmanship on his end
