  • The 1994 FA Cup Final was the 49th FA Cup final to be held since the Second World War and was contested between Manchester United and Chelsea. United went into the final as Premier League champions, having won the title by 8 points over Blackburn Rovers. They were bidding to become only the fourth team of the 20th Century to complete "the Double" and the first in their own history. Chelsea, on the other hand, were playing in their first major final since 1971 having finished 14th in the Premier League.
The match took place on a rainy May afternoon, and, in the first half, Chelsea were the better team. Gavin Peacock had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes when his half-volley hit the crossbar. In the second half, Manchester United took over with three goals in the space of nine minutes; two almost identical penalties by Eric Cantona and a shot by Mark Hughes, following a slip by Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair. Brian McClair scored a late fourth following an unselfish pass by Paul Ince.

Irwin is one of UTDs greatest all time players. Solid, dependable and consistent. A quiet, private man, not like todays overpaid, media obsessed attention seekers.

What I love about ther first pen is the way Cantona places the ball, Elleray moves it, so Cantona goes back again and says 'what are you doing?' before putting it back where he wanted it. Nervous? No chance.

The first penalty was as clear cut as you could ever wish to see; the second one was scandalous but I’m far from convinced it would’ve affected the final outcome, even in light of Hughes’s quick fire third. United were exceptional that season and apart from a minor wobble in March when they lost the LC Final, fell to Blackburn and Wimbledon in the league and Cantona was sent off in two successive games they were brilliant to watch all season.

Don Reed No one with half a brain would ever deny it, just like no one with half a brain would deny that United's buying power isn't part of their success either, or Real Madrids, or Barcelona's or Bayern Munichs....that's the way football is now...as for the League this season as I have said elsewhere today I am not counting any chickens yet, I am too old a Chelsea fan not to know that if anyone can blow this lead WE can blow this lead.

NYJALB OK pal enjoy your football. Pro football died for me many years ago sadly. Money being a, but not the only, reason for this. You're too good a team, with the best manager in football to blow this. Enjoy it while it lasts though before some foreign syndicate buys Spurs, Newcastle, Wolves etc etc etc.

    • @NYJALB
      @NYJALB Před 9 lety

Don Reed I have to say I have fallen out of love with Premier League football a bit lately too, for various reasons but also partly since Ossie passed away, a bit of Chelsea died that day for a lot of us of a certain age.
I still have a season ticket at Chelsea and get to most home games but it's not the same since we got successful....you can stand outside the gates on a match day now and hear a dozen different languages spoken from all the day trippers passing by.
I split my time between down south and a home in Scotland now and so get to see Kilmarnock quite a bit too, the football isn't as good, but it's a lot more honest, and not only does it only cost £20 to get in, but the pies are great too....one thing is for certain though mate, if a mega rich so and so ever buys Tottenham and they start winning the League I am definitely calling it a day!!!

Chelsea were on top in the first half but we hardly battered them. Hit the bar and Stein had a good chance which was blocked by Schmeichel. The penatly changed the game and then United were never going to lose. Their team was different class back then. So balanced. Keane and Ince, Sharpe and Kanchelskis and Hughes and Cantona. Chelsea somehow took 6 points off United this season. Fuck knows how with this mediocre team.

If you're going to scythe down Denis Irwin in front of the ref without touching the ball then you deserve a penalty. The second penalty was dubious, fair enough. The third goal had an element of luck, but hughes was positioned well and still had to beat the keeper. The fourth was no fluke, Chelsea were run ragged and United scored a good team goal.
You don't win 10 premier leagues + more with "penalties, fluke goals from mistakes and flukes in stoppage time! " It helps, but there's more to it.

In the treble season DavidElleray was screwing over ManUtd much worse than that in PL & FAcup latter stages, or trying to anyway. FAcup semi-final vs Arsenal RoyKeane goal disallowed for "offside"?? Giggs had passed to himself before crossing the ball with no one offside and no one noticed the flag that only went up because linesman made a mistake but everyone was actually trying to play the game and didn't notice it for it to effect the rest of play either. Not a single player on the pitch for ManUtd or Arsenal thought there was an offside there. Elleray wasn't favourable towards ManUtd in the replay either (to say the least) and ManUtd pretty much had to beat that solid Arsenal team (who only conceded 17 in PL) 3 times in 1 tie because in the replay after Bergkamp's fortunate deflected equaliser against the run of play to cancel out ManUtd's beauty, ManUtd had to win it all over again in extra-time and with 10 men and with another iconic goal not just being given something. ManUtd were absolutely robbed of a PL win at Anfield by Elleray again on May5th99 which put Arsenal into a position where if they beat 4th place Leeds away on penultimate game (hard fixture) they might have an ever so slight goal difference advantage even if ManUtd were to beat Blackburn the following day. ManUtd were unlucky for it to even be in both Arsenal & ManUtd's hands not just their own hands but Leeds won (just like they did for Arsenal the year earlier in another close race) and then Ferguson thought a draw was good for both ManUtd & Blackburn who were battling relegation and managed by Ferguson's mate BrianKidd and Ferguson seemed happy post match but was then told Blackburn are now down following that draw as they actually needed to win and that changed Ferguson's mood to subdued. Anyway ManUtd won the title (and treble) but it looked a lot closer than it was (in all 3 competitions actually, scored by far the most in PL & CL won CL invincible style and didn't need any pens). People don't realise Arsenal needed much more luck in 97/98 to win the double and also their title race was won less convincingly.
I think ManUtd were comfortable winners in this 1994 final regardless of the Kanchelskis pen decision which is still debatable you can make an argument either way but for sure it wasn't as bad a decision as Liverpool's fake pen May5th99 when Blomqvist hooked the ball away cleanly & fairly when ManUtd were 0-2 up which was a crucial moment in a close title race. This for Chelsea wasn't as crucial, it was a killer for them because they weren't as good as ManUtd and they only beat ManUtd home&away that season because they needed things to go their way and not concede and nick a goal and this game was no different if they were to win it wasn't going to be dominant they didn't have that potential like ManUtd did.

I wonder how much Fergie paid the ref for the 2nd penalty. If it had remained at 1 - 0, you never know what could have happened. That aside, United was outstanding that season.

Not as much as Abramovic paid MartinAtkinson for all those years and then they both stop cheating in Chelsea's favour at the same time 🤫

"CHELSEA DOUBLE CHAMPIONS" Oh yeah, you've won four league titles, and i dunno, five or six FA Cup titles and zero ECCs. call us when you've won a major treble, or when you've matched Manchester United's 18 league titles, 11 Fa cups and 3 Champions league trophies. Because as of now, your club is shit compared to us. Oh yeah.

Those lists need to be amended to include another 2 FA Cups, Chelsea's 2 European Cup Winners Cups (which are/were serious prestigious honours btw, it doens't exist now but was top notch!) The European Cup/Champions League from 2012 and the UEFA Cup/Europa League from 2013. For Manchester United you need to include another FA Cup, 1 European Cup Winners Cup, 1 UEFA Cup/Europa League.

Chelsea beat United twice in the league that season and if peacock would have scored instead of the cross bar would have won this I've no doubt

PL scores are quite irrelevant to this (unless it was an absolute hammering but then again Chelsea seem to think they would've beaten a great ManUtd 2008/09 team with an unplayable Cristiano and many more in either FAcup or CL final 2009 had Chelsea not avoided ManUtd in FA & ManUtd not avoided Chelsea in CL finals both that year?? ManUtd thrashed Chelsea in their last meeting a few months earlier to nil and could even afford to have a wrongly disallowed goal as well) but are you suggesting that makes Chelsea a better team than ManUtd who finished 13 places higher than Chelsea to win the PL 😆
You phrased it Chelsea "beat ManUtd twice" but sometimes a team can take the points because of luck or decisions and by being 2nd best not necessarily that they "beat" them.
Anyone can get lucky in the odd head-to-head game or 2 and Chelsea did they were both only 1-0. Chelsea took the points that doesn't automatically mean they were better than ManUtd in those games. You're only clearly better than a team if you finish many points above the other team in question because many points difference isn't just lucky. Also I'm not saying this was necessarily the case but many times when a team does the double over another especially if they're not actually better overall or only just scraped above them due to the head-to-head wins they could've been because of certain circumstances like the team that lost had key players unavailable at the times you played them you could've just got them at a lucky time in the season.
Chelsea then would need everything to go their way to get those wins, keep it tight/ride their luck, nick a goal. ManUtd didn't generally need all that to happen to win and that includes when Chelsea became Chelski Ferguson's ManUtd after a slight rebuild selling half the class of 92 and waiting for the replacements to get up to standard became again the more stronger & more consistent team from 2006/07 to 2012/13 despite how expensive Chelsea's team's were and if you notice whenever Chelsea ever got a draw or win vs ManUtd in this period they always deserved less because they're not as good a team but Chelsea were getting a lot of decisions in Abramovic era which was a big factor as well.
Chelsea certainly weren't unlucky in 93/94 that they couldn't get lucky 3 out of 3 times that season but I think obviously from their point of view they would've preferred being lucky in this one they'd trade both head-to-head wins for this surely. But this scoreline was a better reflection of the difference between the 2 teams than the previous 2 results. You may have deserved at least 1of the head-to-head wins you got even if it was narrow but you seem like you can't tell when your team is lucky and exaggerate something when you lose so you always think you're better than you are.
