OUCH! HURTS SO GOOD ... to see THAT bike again! My friend, God rest his soul, let me test ride his bike - this same year CR250 Elsinore - in-between his race heats and I WAS BLOWN AWAY! GAME CHANGER, BABY, FOR SURE!

All eyes were glued on these when these came out the smell in the air a unique sound everyone was exited just to hear watch and feel what a real elsinore looked and performed like was best fun anybody could have had on something genuine of the early 1970s it could rip and plough the earth

Hey there it could be a faulty CDI as it sounds like the ignition is not advancing , being a display piece the CDI was probably swapped out for a dud one to keep another CR runnin

Out here from Lake Elsinore area, this bike has always had a special feeling for me knowing the history of the bike and the LEGP where Steve McQueen would dominate.

Brings a year to my eye: had the similar 74 CR125m Elsinore back in 1978 as original & looked as good as this one, at first I didn't like the & rode 6 different Cars until I road my Rocketship & by the top of 1st gear I knew despite a blown 3rd gear I had to have it 1 cold frosty test ride night. It lifted the front wheel in the 1st 3 gears...after I bought it from the college students mum for $250....it still had its original tyres on it & on std bore with no wear on the jug !. I split the cases myself & put a new 3rd gear in it for $32 & reassembled it: god that thing was scaringly fast & I found out later that the real hot running ones used to blow 2nd & 3rd gear.I also learnt years later that it had the restrictive corn popper muffler & replace it with a Glasspac strait through muffler like mine had as well that you picked up another solid 3 HP & in a dragrace it was neck & neck with the then new mates 1979 YZ125 monoshock & was he pissed off !
I got the holeshot on Australasian champion on it.On a regretful forced sale on moving to AU a test pilot was away for ages but didn't buy it but he came back white coloured & said:" I don't believe it,this thing is Faster than my CZ250 " tight arse was only joy riding, if we didn't move to Australia I'd still be owning it & the cylinder hadn't been ported: it was stock ! Gee I miss that rocket ship & it never once loaded up or fouled a plug on me & you could even trail ride on it !. I see restored ones asking stupid money, but when you know something about them, something doesn't belong Etc....I sold it for $250 & had difficulty at that, about $150US yep stupid money now eh ? If only I STILL had that bike: riding it made a teen feel a million $.Cheers from NewZealand.

Uncle ken those early carbureters were very unique on these early elsinores i never see on the more modern mikuni,s the top of the old carbs where you unscrew to take the slide out was different it looked a nice carb on the early elsinores they are like a beautifull ghost these days with the down pipe we welded the underneath of the pipe because of rocks but it looked good the yamaha,s were up pipes the same year of the elsinores it would be good if the early honda,s could have a upsweep pipe the same with suzuki tms but honda had the problem with the pipe maybe a special well made down pipe like a dg pipe i can,t remember the name for the pipe they used on the early red devil elsinore in 1976 you could get a racing pipe for two stroke down pipes still they were fun and sounded like the true elsinore sounded like

Sounds good the ignition system is shorting out!! Check your kill wire on the handle bars

Or the points and coil need to be tested the list goes on fuel delivery system I'd do a major troubleshoot on the bike engine

Wow! Nicest Elsinore I have ever seen. I wish they still called the CR:Elisnore.. I had a 79' and I think that was the last year of the dessert race nameplate.

I bought an Elsinore 250 brand new in the 70's amazing bike-- They used 'load up' alot..like it struggles to stay running for a minute or two- trying to breath for awhile until it clears up in the carb or something...that was it's #1 flaw....starting fluid spray might help that bike..it's boggin' out also..

What a jewel awesome megaleap in motocross History.
How well did the cr's do against Husquavarna of the same time period
What else equally competitive with this Cr in 73 or anything else better performing at the time?

I didn't hear it start and run , I have one of these and it sounds like a jet or needle issue . If not then you can move on to a stabler and coil , and I'm no mechanic .

      Do some research son...
All 73/74 CR 250M tanks were bare, brushed aluminum then clear coated.
CR 125M and MT 250 steel tanks were painted silver.

I never said they were not green painted tops..
The sides of the tanks were never painted silver...
And I also raced, and currently own 3, and restore these bikes...
Maybe your memory is failing you...

@@johnwadsworth4916 i have a tank sitting here and yes the top was painted green but as HJG 1964 said the sides were brushed aluminium (the 125s were painted silver but not the 250s), so that tank has been painted and the front drum outer case is meant to be black not silver there is a few unoriginal bits on that bike.
