      Trust me, you just have to find something you're keenly interested in and that you find valuable in your life. That's the only reason why anyone is productive or accomplishes great things: they saw it to be beneficial and interesting enough to put hard work towards it.

    Here is a good advice in learning the languages: Learn them one by one, and when you go to the next one, learn it in the most recent language you learned. (for example you learned Spanish and have plans on learning French, learn French in Spanish)
    happy studies.

      It is true that there are more resources in English, but I just personally think that it is better to learn newer languages through the recent languages, because it helps you in both languages, the one that you are learning, and the one you have learned in making it stay in your head while also learning a new language, besides it could be a fun challenge.

    When I was 7 years old I had the goal/dream to learn 14 languages, now I'm 21 and only speak 4 languages. I hope to learn the 10 remaining languages, this video really inspired me because I kinda gave up on learning new languages.
    Learning a language was so much easier for me as a child, now I'm scared of messing up.

    • @essennagerry
      @essennagerry Před 4 lety +20

      That is so cute! But don't be scared, that is not something someone is forcing you to do, you do it for yourself so feel free to do it on your own terms. :)
      When I was like 4/5 I had a dream of four languages and additional two. I never thought much about it until I was about 17/18 and realized I've learned two of them. I then got excited to learn the other two as well. However, in the few following years I got to knoe about more languaged and cultures and fell inlove with two other languaged which are not part of the dream. So now idk if I'll ever learn the original two to a very good level, maybe I'll only dabble in them. But! *I don't feel bad about it. ^^* It's my dream so I changed it to my preference. Life can take us in different directions.

    • @veramayer9571
      @veramayer9571 Před 4 lety +7

      Don't be scared! You can just learn for yourself and enjoy reading stuff, listening to music and watching movies in your new language. If you do mess up, nobody will be any the wiser, and you'll gradually improve if you stick with it. And if you choose to try out your new knowledge on native speakers, which I recommend, you don't need to worry. They'll be extremely appreciative of your efforts and they won't judge you for messing up. You'll get compliments and looks of surprise, not criticism, even if you are far from perfect. Go for it!
      Also, if you decide to take the leap, and write up a schedule and all that, don't be too hard on yourself if life gets in the way and you fall behind. Keep marchin' on, slow progress is better than no progress!

      @@EmperorsReview ok then :) I practically grew up bilingual in Romanian and Hungarian, to which I later added English, French and Italian. Out of the three, I rate my English as very good, the other two are somewhat weaker but still good enough. I also understand written Spanish to the point of being able to read and enjoy a novel without much effort, but spoken Spanish is a bit trickier... But I can carry out a basic conversation. I also know a little German, but I should brush up on it - it's only good enough for going shopping or asking for directions if lost. During last year I added Turkish to the bunch, and while it's still very much a work in progress, I can now follow a movie or TV series without subtitles, and I have been able to hold conversations with people in Turkey when I went on holiday there this summer. By no means perfect, but I got no flak for my mistakes, and this experience is what makes me say you should just go for it and learn the language you want to learn without worrying about mistakes. I feel even the tiniest amount of knowledge goes a long way and opens up new worlds. Plus, that little glow of satisfaction you get when you are able to communicate with others in your new language is just priceless, in my opinion!
      I actually am rather shy and I have a bit of a fear of failure too, so I understand these feelings, but I've luckily reached the point where I know it's better to just embrace the messiness of it and dive right in without worrying too much - the more you practice a language the better you eventually get at it. Even if you're no longer that young, you shouldn't let your age put you off :)

    Hi, Lindie. You seem to be one of the first to come up with an annual plan for 2020. This weekend, I'll move out of my parents' house (Dad died in 2002 and Mom last month) and into an apartment by myself (actually the basement of a stranger's home). My plan is to have different language courses in different locations in the apartment, and what I study will be based on where I am at the time. I have several MP3 players because I prefer to use audio programs (Innovative Language podcasts, Michel Thomas, Glossika, etc.) and I'm now in the process of choosing which language and course to put on which MP3 player and where to put it in my home (one beside my bed, one on the couch, etc.), as well as which languages I'll study by book (intermediate Japanese textbooks for reading practice) or via computer (Language Boost courses created by polyglots Jan van der Aa and Lucas Bighetti). I'm tentatively planning this winter to focus on Japanese (mostly reading/kanji), French (mostly listening), and Russian (mastering the basics/high beginner level)--however, I might still change my mind on which languages. I had a good Add1Challenge experience with German this year, so I might add German or substitute Russian with German. Also, I've tried to learn Mandarin Chinese, but so far it's my most difficult language, and I don't know if I want to continue it. Best wishes on your goals and languages! Thanks for the video.

      Yeah, it's so hard to find that balance of pushing yourself but also going easy on yourself when you take on too much. Also, trying to focus on the languages you already know and make them REALLY GOOD, this is what I struggle with. I know that I should spend 2020 just honing French and Swedish, but I doubt I'll be able to resist starting a new one by, say, June haha.

      Luckily not all of these languages are at beginner level and I'm learning new ones through other languages. This is what I enjoy and I appreciate your thoughts but I enjoy what I'm doing! Of course it would be a terrible idea to learn all 12 languages from scratch. I've been learning Korean for 10 years and that's enough of a base and depth to let it be a language medium to study others from.

    Inspirational! I love how you add in that learning languages is a learned skill, not some sort of inherent talent - it makes becoming a "polyglot" seem so much more doable for us not-so-clever folks. One day I hope to be as good at my TLs as you are at Korean, I hope your drive will inspire me to continue!
    My goals for 2020 are: reach a B2 level in Welsh, and reach a B1 level in Portuguese. I might start Korean if I have enough time... My ultimate (life) goal is to speak eight languages, but I'm taking things slow. :P

      I've been learning Korean for 3 years, I love it but I however have to warn you : learn it ONLY if this is the only asian language you like. If you also like Chinese I would highly recommend learning this one as it is in higher demand and is way easier outside of the character aspect. Korean may look easier but when you actually get into it it is HELL

      Logan Carson Parles-tu ces langues couramment ? Parce-que on ne peut pas prétendre de les parler en comprendre juste parce-que tu les bosses au collège et un peu chez toi (le niveau en 4ème est le A2, donc très basique). Au collège tu ne sais que la langue de manière très basique (et donc pas assez pour prétendre la connaître). Par exemple, dans mon cas, je peux dire que je parle couramment 2 langues : l’Italien et le français (j’ai vécu en Italie jusqu’à l’âge de 10 ans, puis j’ai déménagé et ça va faire mnt 6 ans que je suis en France); je saisis toutes les subtilités de ces 2 langues. Pour ce qui est de l’anglais je comprends 95% quand les gens parlent dans n’importe quelle conversation, je sais également m’exprimer (de manière basique) à l’écrit. Ceci est pareil pour l’espagnol, ce n’est pas pour autant que je me dis que je parle ces langues.
      En tout cas ne prend pas mal ce commentaire, je ne vise strictement pas à ne pas reconnaître les compétences que tu as peut-être, je cherche juste à m’assurer que tu sais bien ce que tu prétend savoir, sans tomber dans des abus de langage 🙂

    My goals for 2020:
    French, German, Latin, Italian - just maintain through low level practice. I'm not fluent in these but comfortable enough to let them progress slowly.
    Arabic - add in lots of exposure for listening practice as so far I've focussed only on reading, writing and grammar. Also start branching out from standard Arabic to include a dialect.
    Japanese and Chinese - focus on reading and writing to improve my memory for the characters rather than just speaking and listening.
    Korean - work through a few textbooks to make sure my grammar is correct. Keep building my vocabulary.
    Others - I'm really interested in different writing scripts so, depending on how things go, I would like to learn maybe 2-3 more next year.
    For everything, I need to work on my confidence in speaking. My tongue turns to lead and brain panics and goes blank.
    Thank-you for your videos Lindie, you've inspired me to work harder in my language learning and to have the confidence to follow everything I'm interested in when so many people tell me it's too much and too hard. I still call myself monolingual because I'm too nervous to speak but my dream is to one day be confident enough to answer 'yes' when someone asks if I can speak another language.

      I love how in Arabic you’ll start including a dialect. Because that’s the real experience when you learn standard Arabic and a dialect alongside each other this will allow your Arabic to be as natural as possible. This way you’ll understand other dialects too once you’re comfortable in standard Arabic and a dialect, because you’ll then realise Arabic dialects are more similar than you think, it’s all about the origin which is standard Arabic. Good luckkkk
