  • This is a video on why I recommend Quests and talk about Meta even though I disagree with some of the foundations of Meta and Facebook. This is my stance moving forward on this channel as to why I will do the things i do. This has been weighing on me heavily. I hope these words resonate well with some people. If you agree or disagree, let me know in the comments. Lets have a discussion, otherwise, lets talk about it on my Discord.
    I love VR and the Virtual Reality industry so much. I want to see it thrive and prosper in an open ecosystem with choice and fairness for everybody.

      I love that analogy and you're absolutely right. It's rather naive of Thrill to think we will be able to veer the ship in the direction we want. Once their competition is dead no one will jump ship as there will be no other ship left in the Ocean. Then you're stuck with a dictator of a captain.

    • @billfortney6560
      @billfortney6560 Před 2 lety +21

      That is definitly a concern, but I think so long as we don't go aboard with blinders on our headsets, and so long as we as a community stick together, we can still help stear the ship. If ten thousand people crowd to a corner of the boat at once, the boat will lean that direction. Lets keep our eyes, ears, and mind open and see where this goes, then if it does capsize, lets make sure theres room on the debris for Jack to get out of the water. We need more life rafts!

      Yep, this isn't really much of a stretch. The steam deck hardware makes the quest look like a potato. Change the form factor, put some lenses in front of that screen and you have yourself a vr headset. You can even make it so you have a computer screen in VR and use a keyboard and mouse and play 2d games like you would on a PC, but with your headset on, and then play a vr game... or a 3d desktop game where the game comes out of the monitor.
      This is such a straight forward thing that it would boggle my mind if someone in valve wasn't already prototyping it. And then, they have an entire storefront of vr games instantly available from launch day.

      @@JRCT3E More like Sony, Microsoft, Valve and companies like Asus. I don't think you have to be worried. The established big dogs of the gaming industry are just smarter than Mesa. Keep in mind that it wasn't that long ago normal VR headsets were like $2000-3000. In 5-10 more years it's going to be even less.
      I'm happy with my Quest for now, but the way I see it, the Quest is comparable to the iPhone (except facebook being worse than Apple). Alone in the market, trying to dominate by locking hardware and software together. Until Google's Android came along.
      Let's just let Mesa deal with the advertising, development and adoption of this new tech until costs are down. After that, other companies will jump in and hit with them hard, that's a given.
      Imagine when a companies that people actually like, like Sony and Valve, start releasing their mobile HMDs 5-10 years from now for the same $400 price tag, only they will be better than anything available at the market today, and they won't be selling it a loss. Who will be laughing then? Is there anyone who is ever going to pick the company you absolutely can not trust over a consumer-friendly one like, when given the choice?
      If you compare them to Apple, Apple provide an experience. They try and make consumer-grade hardware feel luxurious, and people buy into that.
      People buy Apple because it's Apple. But people buy Facebook/Mesa _despite_ it being them, for the sole reason that there's nobody else offering the same thing. In the long run, they simply have nothing to offer.

    Having recently released our first VR title, at least the part about being financially unstable with a PC-only release is correct. But why the complete disregard of Sony as a BIG challenger in the VR space? They have had the most successful VR headset until just two years ago after all. Meta is a good platform for VR devs, but there is lots of potential for competition across the board, and heavy investments being made into games, platforms and hardware. For VR Indie Devs to be financially stable, it will come down to designing VR games from the get-go for a multi-platform release. And contrary to popular belief, here's a fact: Exclusivity is NOT a requirement to get funded.

    • @Micromation
      @Micromation Před 2 lety +1

      PSVR turned more people from VR than encouraged into delving deeper... It was seen by many as an expensive gimmick and in case of PSVR they were absolutely correct in their assessment. Controllers were the main problems. Move was dogshit when it released 10 years ago - I would know, I've had them since day1 on PS3... this offered extremely limited capability of interaction for PSVR games so most of them were made to be played with gamepad. You know what a seated VR experience with gamepad is? A fucking playing on 3D TV which has failed spectacularly and was rightfully dismissed as a gimmick - in my opinion what makes VR games a new unique experience that could convince new customers is the interaction with the virtual world, not the headset itself. Rift releasing without Touch was a massive mistake too. It has literally hampered development on VR for years. I'm happy Quest 2 is becoming the most popular VR set because graphic aren't the problem, uninteresting gameplay is. And while I would ideally want successor of Index to become the mainstream, Quest 2 is what I would consider the bare minimum to have somewhat compelling VR experience.

    • @Micromation
      @Micromation Před 2 lety +1

      @@notlNSIGHT IMHO controllers are way more important than headset. I have original Rift, Quest 2 and Index - there's vast difference in picture quality between them but neither bothers me in the slightest - it's the controllers that enable your interaction with virtual environment. Unless you're playing combat flight simulator where you have to spot the dot, 1st rift is perfectly sufficient for overwhelming majority of applications. Good screen, less screen door effect, wider FoV is what I would call a welcome but non essential luxury. When it comes to headsets I would much rather have new functionality (I remember back in the day there were talks about using eye tracking for variable resolution to improve performance and decrease hardware requirements, now they're predictively generating frames to increase performance, stuff like that makes way bigger difference than more sleek looking HMD (who the fuck cares, lmao) or slightly more pixels...

    The premise that we'll just be using Meta as a "ship" to drive the industry forward and that we should "abandon" it as soon as the competition is further along doesn't make much sense to me. That's under the impression that in, let's say 1-3 years from now when we have more competition with standalone headset hardware + software that could compete with Meta at the level of Quest 2 in it's current state, that Meta isn't going to have something that's STILL better by a mile compared to the competition at that point.
    Back to the ship analogy - that's like abandoning a luxurious, but affordable, cruise liner with the best offerings for a view of the ocean and more in entertainment available - for the price of your compliance with the rules + a small fee for the ticket to board - versus a small sailboat that you end up paying more than the cruise ship ticket for, but you yourself will own it fully. Yes, you'll have much more freedom, but you'd lack the innovations and features that a cruise ship could provide - though you can at least say that both of them float and take you places you couldn't go otherwise. For the average person that just wants to see the ocean and experience it in the best way possible for a decent price, it makes more sense to go with the cruise ship - but for the more experienced sea-goer, the sailboat might end up becoming a better option for them in long-run. The problem for the sailboat owner though is that it will always lack all the technological features of a cruise ship, so making that switch might not even happen.
    Probably not the best way to phrase that, but I hope it makes some sense. Personally, I feel like we just need to see more standalone competition in general - Meta / Oculus definitely has the largest share of headset owners on Steam at around 60%, but that doesn't mean they're at 100 - they don't own the PCVR side of things FULLY, though inevitably they'll own a larger share since a Quest 2 can link to a PC (which of course makes the Quest 2 that much more enticing compared to PCVR-only headsets).

      @@IskandarTheWack PSVR 2 is something that's still tethered to a console though - it's clear by overall consumer sales that most people would rather spend money on an "all-in-one" standalone headset, rather than a headset that still requires an additional console system to work ($300 USD vs. $1000+ for a decent PCVR setup). The main reason PCVR is probably further ahead than PSVR right now is 1. There really isn't many PSVR exclusives worth investing that much money into to play (though I will say that Fracked looks kinda cool) and 2. Most of the more well known VR titles are either exclusive to the Quest 2, or exclusive to PCVR. Yeah, maybe in a few years PSVR 2 will come out along with some good games, but who's to say that the Quest won't improve further as well? It's basically still the same argument as PCVR vs. standalone - PSVR is still using a console, it's the same concept as PCVR in practice.
      Also, I would take any "insider" information with a *massive* grain-of-salt - assuming that every new game that may eventually come out for PSVR 2 is going to be a masterpiece for VR is wishful thinking at best. There might be a 1 or 2, but I doubt it would be enough to warrant people buying a PS5 + the VR hardware just to play it - which would make most of the hardware upgrades sort of pointless if there's no good games that make use of those improvements. Personally, I've tried PSVR for RE7 way back a few years ago at a friend's place - it was alright, but my god the difference between current PSVR and something like a $300 Quest 2 is night and day. It's nice that Playstation are taking the first steps to try and create competition, but they have a massive hill to climb to come anywhere close to the Quest 2's popularity.

      Game companies can either develop their own VR engine or a 3rd party can develop an engine for game companies to use, they they work on porting older games to VR.
      Not sure how they would handle gameplay, would have to be more of a remaster and it would benefit some games better than others, but it's not impossible and it would be less dauntng than committing to the cost of an entirely new game.

      I guess one issue is if they release a bunch of shit games it might deter people more than having no games at all, but if there was a descent 3rd party that companies could hire to port their games to VR, maybe that's a possibility? I know something similar used to exist for porting console games to handheld, games like quake for the Saturn or doom on the SNES and Gameboy advance were technical feats, but a lot of shit ports happened too. A lot of them used their own in-house game engines.
      Maybe if that market were to open up and some companies got really good at desktop to VR conversions?
      I guess working with older engines would have it's fundamental flaws, unless the code was modular enough to change the engine without too much hassle, I'm only guessing since I'm not a developer.
      Games are bigger now though, although relatively speaking games were big for the time back then too, the main issue is implementing VR in a way that isn't gimmicky.

Big companies dont like that, thats why ports i mentioned are so bad, small budget and low affort as a result.
      2) even now, with huge explosion in quest popularity, there is still too litle VR users, so no company will invest money in creation of an engine for VR only - as i said, its too expensive.
      I agree that VR needs more content. No, even harder. it PRAYS for new content. New headsets? Releasing every year. Good AAA level content that can become a system seller? Like you said though, the market is monopolized by a couple so until there is a lot more choices that are just as good as the others I'll probably still sit on the sidelines and watch the progression. Your videos are very informative and I appreciate your work.

    As someone who got into the concept of VR not with Ready Player One and the Oasis but an old somewhat obscure manga called Yureka with no such thing, I'm not that interested in the concept of an Oasis, or a Metaverse, or a Nexus (as I've read some people call it) but the very idea that something that can be so central to how people concieve of VR could belong to something like Meta and be solely modeled after it's wish, that is trully scary to me. Otherwise, those who dont know, don't care, or don't get it will ruin the plan by continuing to feed their money Meta. Oh, and you can bet Meta will be trying to sabotage this in many ways if it even appears like it might work so you all will have to be on guard for that.

    Hey, I think you have thought a lot about this and I respect and appreciate both your love for VR and the community, as well as your clear view of the catastrophe that VR will become under the guidance/control of Meta.
    I would like to challenge your strategy by simply saying that joining something you fundamentally disagree with just to get there faster will never get you where you want to be.
    There is no hurry with VR, except that WE all want it faster. But VR is inevitable. Making a deal with the devil because I want to be the best guitarist in the world (without the thousands of hours it takes to do it on my own) never ends well for the musician, but it always ends well for the devil.
    To think that the community can maintain some significant level of control, or even autonomy (as a community), with Meta as the benefactor of VR just isn't realistic.
    If our goal is really for the health and protection of VR as a concept, and for the VR community specifically, then I say slow down and support healthy competition that stops the snowball, even if it means many people don't get introduced to VR, or don't have an easy entry point. If having an easy mass entry point means that the future of VR is locked into a toxic tyranny - it's better for them to wait and support a healthier, more robust VR future.
    Having the masses adopt VR in a way that railroads the future of VR is too high a price to pay for such a fundamentally formative technology.

      So your suggestion to someone who is curious about VR would be to either take out a loan that they possibly can't afford, or just refrain from ever trying it for the foreseeable future, for the greater good?
      The more people use it, the more demand there is. The greater the demand, the more other companies will fill the gap. There's nothing Meta can do to prevent that, however much they'd like to.
      I actually could afford a Valve Index if I really wanted one. And now after a using the Quest 2 for a month, I might actually consider it at some point... If I could be convinced that it was actually better, aside from the feeling of moral superiority it might give me.
      But people have been talking about VR since like the 60s, and all I've ever heard my entire life is: it may change the world one day, hypothetically... But for now, it's a clunky, awkward toy with bad graphics that makes you sick. There's zero chance I would have thrown down 1K just to find out if it was any good yet.

      @robinbernardinis Před 2 lety +6

      @@a8lg6p Do you think that the lack of competition in VR hardware is due to the fact that potential competitors think there is low demand for VR? That's rich. All the tech giants know exactly what's up. The problem is Facebook managed to gobble up market share by selling the hardware dirt cheap, bring people into the ecosystem, and use their leverage to gain control of game developers, giving them control over the whole VR space. Now the competition can't pull the same move and sell hardware at a loss because FB already has the lion's share of the market, and actually trying to make a compelling product at a good price point is impossible due to the R&D costs and FB undercutting you on pricing.

They have spent billions the past few years and taking losses just to become the king of this new revolutionary technology and you really think they are just gonna let people "jump ship" when a new alternative arrives?? HELL NO!!! FB will do everything in their power to make sure you get depended on the quest ecosystem so that its becomes almost impossible to move on, kinda like how people can't switch from Windows to Linux because that's the os they have been using ever since they were born. There is also this strange obsession with brand loyalty among fans of a product in recent years just look at the stupid console wars consisting of xbox fans, playstation fans and nintendo manchildrens who will argue with each other about their exclusives day and night, that's the future vr users are heading to. That's why in my eyes if you ever buy a quest headset you lose your right to criticise FB on their bullshit, you have already financially gave your support and will continue to do so to play games on their platform so why should they ever care what you have to say. You can go ahead and call me a gatekeeper, a hater or a rich prick but I don't care, sure in the short run the quest 2 headset is a great deal for price and accessibility but I the long run you will probably end up regretting it. Im scared... I just want to be able to get into VR for the first time, and yet it seems everything is going downhill... Metaphorically, this train is going downhill faster than I can catch up to it and hop onboard. I hope VR becomes open and cheaper for everyone in the future

    I've been a fan of this channel for a while, and this is definitely by far the best and most inspirational video I've seen on it. I've been interested in VR ever since the Rift was in development years ago but aside from having a PSVR, have yet to really climb on board the VR train and getting a Quest because of the fear of contributing to the monopoly Meta holds. You made some very good points, especially in the second half of the video that have helped convince me to just do it as it will help push VR as a whole in so many different directions other than just tightening Meta's grip. I hope your predictions are right and this can really pave the way for healthy competition in the future. My main concern now is that Valve will announce a standalone headset the day after I get a Quest haha.

    Smart take, Thrill. I agree, and I'm really glad you broke it down the way you did.

    So you would recommend Vive?
    I was just checking out the Vive Pro kit & was wondering if that is a good one to get.
    Thanks for you input bud.

    It’s awesome seeing the start of all of this and being a part of it. We already know what the possible outcomes are going to be but seeing how we get there is a crazy trip to say the least

    Honestly, once the technology gets cheaper and other companies start making affordable standalone headsets, plenty people will probably switch just because they don't like Meta.

      That’s where I am. I cannot afford an expensive headset so I have the oculus 2 until there are better affordable options.

      If valve makes a quest 2 type product it’s over for meta, I can’t wait till that happens

      It's really not about the headset. It will be about the platforms and features. Those smaller companies will need too late and will not build a platform more robust than meta

    The quest 2 is an amazing piece of kit no doubt about it. As an entry point it’s incredible really in comparison to older head sets us long term users had access to. It’s so easy to recommend but as said, the Pitt falls to this are obvious. It’s such a shame there is not more competition because of this cooperations power, but without that power VR wouldn’t be where it is progress wise …..

    Thank you. Your videos have been INCREDIBLY informative and helpful. A very level headed approach... As soon as my local shop actually stocks some new units I'll be buying a Quest 2... And letting Mark Z foot the VR growth bill 😁
