During the night, 200 Japanese soldiers decided to surprise the Gurkhas and to break their way to Taungdaw.
The first line of defence they encountered into was a small trench manned by Lachhiman Gurung and two other soldiers.
This trench was positioned on the jungle road that led straight to the camp.
If Gurung’s position was overrun, the entire camp would have been endangered...

@@shadowfast541 Well, technically he was awarded a medal of honour. If you aren't aware the, MOH is only awarded to American service. Therefore, he was awarded the Victoria Cross which, is awarded to British and Commonwealth servicemen.

As a Brit I know all about these legendary soldiers bravery - there is a Battalion stationed 20 miles down the road from where I live in Kent. When you meet them they are quite small in stature, very polite and a little reserved. I wouldn't want to be facing them in battle. Sure glad they're on our side!

There's also one in cheriton, in Kent. I know they can fight, because my secondary school population was about 40% gurkha.

My Dad was with the 8th Army Desert Rats (Uk) He fought at El Al Alemein ,up through Southern Italy to Monte Casino. He fought alongside Gurkhas and his story to me was that they were the bravest, most honourable soldiers. He had a lot of respect for them and it always brought tears to his eyes to recount his memories. He was gifted a Kukri and this along with his medals are with my nephew in Canada, who is an ex Royal Marine. So on his behalf, Thank-You and many Blessings.

When the Japanese moved In to occupy The Malay Peninsular, my grandfather who was a desk clerk in the British government offices. He witnessed and survived the initial Japanese attack on the northern town of Ipoh. During the fighting he saw a Gurkha, take on 5 Japanese soldiers who were armed with guns and Katanas. The Gurkha only had his Kukri. He took out 3 of them and injured the other two before they managed to take him down.

I don't want to separate our mongolian caste brothers but they fought for other country while the ones I mentioned above fought for thier home soil
