I went over a huge transformation of my style and everything over the past year. Actually seeing things that fit and are versatile actually boosted my confidence and everything. I know now that if I look in my closet and pick anything, 9 times out of 10 it will go with everything else. I also believe buying quality over quantity, but at the start I definitely recommend trying some well known brands that may be of lesser quality to see your style then upgrade over time. Will save you a lot of money rather than buying that sport coat for $300 that you loved at the time, but you ended up not liking it down the road or it didn't really suit your personal style. Keep up the good vids!

Absolutely agreed ! If you buy a higher(st) quality and go for style (timeless, classic, etc) compared to a 'fashion' trend items. You can be sure, that it will last so long, that your money have been payed, back many times, compared with frequent buy's' of 'fashion' items. So in the long run, it can be cheaper.
It's so much more pleasant to be well dressed 👌🏼

Great advice. It's tragic that this approach to style is so at odds with our western culture these days, people really do need to hear the message Brain is presenting on this channel. The average person in Canada or the USA is very poorly dressed, and has a mess of junk inside their overstuffed closets at home. Better quality and less quantity.

Great advice Brian! If I may add on top of this list, it is to keep an open mind and experiment. It could be small things like a new tie knot or a type of belt, to something bigger like new silhouettes or new style all together. Using myself as an example, as a bigger guy I hated pullover sweaters but I've kinda fell in love with them last winter after giving them another shot. I thought fuller cuts were "wrong" ever since I got into menswear but this summer I've been enjoying the spaciousness a lot more. Experimenting might sometimes go against points #3 and #4 (quality and affordability), but I think it's a worthwhile investment if you love dressing up! - Han

I have experienced this with suits, when I was faced with needing to buy my first suit for a friends wedding I opted to buy a more expensive and quality option(Suit supply) which at the time was a big investment for me($800+). My friends went all with Zara and cheap suits. The way the Italian wool from my suit draped and shinned was so noticeable when compared to my friends. Quality is often visible in ways you wouldn't imagine, fit could make a cheap item look better but it can only go so far.

Well said, my friend. Someone I know kept asking me for advice on getting a nice MTM suit for his 25 year high school reunion. He was ahead of the curve too--planning about six months in advance. He kept dithering and do you know what he did finally??? He bought a suit from Express. The horror! I was so disappointed in him. He's well-off so money was NOT this issue.

You don't have to reinvent the wheel--it can't be done and nothing good usually comes from it. If you believe in subtlety and classics, you don't need to do anything special to stand out. I completely agree with your point about finding and developing a relationship with a good tailor. This is something many CZcams and Instagram influencers mention repeatedly. However, while they talk about the importance of tailoring and what can and can't be altered in men's garments, rarely does anyone go into the details of HOW to find a good tailor and HOW to build that relationship. I ask around often, but most of the men I know don't get their clothes tailored, and the women recommend professionals who specialize mainly in women's garments. Do you have a good video on the subject, or know of one you could recommend?

However, now that I've been doing this for a while, I wish I could start over. I'd definitely lean into keeping it simple, had I a second "at bat". While I don't think expensive necessarily means better quality (I've seen $300 Gucci shoes that aren't worth even $150, for example), I do agree that you should know that you get what you paid for. If you take your time to make sure you aren't paying for only a brand's name, you ultimately do get a better garment and if you cut costs, you'll surely cut quality.
Going by that logic, and seeing how a good quality suit looks in your videos, I've decided to spend a decent amount for a MTM suit for my wedding, instead of just buying a $200 off-the-rack Polyester suit like most of my friends. I think it was a great decision, you could spot the difference from miles away which was, in your words - a sound investment.
And on top of it all - I get to wear it again, because it's just a timeless design. Nothing crazy or flashy, it just works for almost every occasion.
All in all, I think those rules could make a great change for one's wardrobe. And TBH, I honestly believe that in the long run, having a small interchangeable wardrobe made out of high quality clothes will last you longer, look better and eventually cost less since you don't NEED to buy more clothes every now and then.
As always - great video Brian. I'd also like to add that the suit looks great on you. Really liked the pocket square.
    Cheers!

Like the video a lot, really great advice. However I take issue with the maxim "you get what you pay for." Because you often don't! That's the whole point. You don't get what you pay for because there are a bunch of dishonest brokers looking for a cash grab instead of producing honest quality, getting away with whatever the market will bear. It's hard to give exact examples, but think of a mid-level department store suit from an established international mega brand. Like say Hugo Boss at Macy's. Now compare that suit to a standard offering from outfits like Suit Supply, Oliver Wicks, Cavour, Spier & Mackay. The quality from these is way better for a similar price. You definitely do not "get what you pay for" with the former. And luxury brands are the often the worst - there might be some redeeming qualities, perhaps the general aesthetic, silhouette etc. But the craftsmanship might be quite basic and the mark up ridiculous, just cynically taking advantage of vain people looking for a status buy, making us pay for marketing and smoke and mirrors.
You do of course say that going for quality is one of your keys, looking for the best quality in your price range. But I think "you get what you pay for" are not words to live by, in clothing or in any other consumer arena,. Because often what you pay for is a bunch of b.s.. You need to be vigilant to find the best quality/price ratio.

      @hespokestyle  Před 4 lety +1

You're absolutely correct, Michael. "Luxury" brands notwithstanding, however, if you ARE considering quality/materials, you generally are getting what you pay for.

Regards tip 4. I would say if you're growing up or building up muscle/ losing weight, you probarbly just go for some budget buy first. God knows how your physique changes during the time. Finding a tailor afterwards would cost more. So best suggest someone in a stable physique to pay for a quality/ expensive clothing.

Great video, really learned a lot. But I had a question about what you're wearing in this video. How does your shirt stay like that? How can I wear a suit and shirt, (no tie) and the shirt not slip under the collar of the jacket? Is it the shirt you're wearing? Is it the fit of the shirt? Is it the material of the shirt? Or even the design of the collar? Helpe out if you can. Thanks.

I mostly agree with what you said in this video except one thing, "Confidence."
I am a firm believer that true confidence never comes from wearing good clothes, dressing sharp, and becoming a stylish man, etc. Sure, stylish wardrobe makes you feel a little bit happier about your current lifestyle even if important things in life are not necessarily going well. If someone tells you wearing good clothes makes him/her feel confident, I would probably interpret it as a sign of insecurity and subconscious dependence. It is closer to truth to say, "interpersonal trust engenders confidence", "Unconditional love makes you truly confident", etc. It's hugely mistaken to say, "Wearing good clothes makes you confident." UNTRUE.
