- I hope you enjoy my orange zest cold process soap making video! Adding citrus zest and other botanical ingredients to your soap is a lovely, affordable way to add colour, a little bit of fragrance and interest to your handmade cold processed soaps.
Recipe details
780g total oil batch
42% lye concentration for the lye solution (it's a low water soap - if you're not sure what this means, please check out this video • Calculating Water in S... )
2% superfat, calculated into the recipe (a lye discount)
Olive oil 85% - 663g
Coconut oil 10% - 78g
Castor oil 5% - 39g
Water 150g
Sodium hydroxide/caustic soda 108g
I made this soap with the oils at room temperature and the lye solution recently mixed, so very warm. You can make it with warm oils and cool lye solution too - either way is fine, it's a very forgiving recipe. Most of my soaps are made with an olive oil-based recipe, similar to this one.

I just love how simple yet luxurious looking they look, like the ones they have at 5 star hotels.
Thank you. They're really wonderful to use.
I grew up on an orange grove. My mom decided one day we could get rich selling the zest. We zested about 1000 oranges for her one night. We laid it all out on our trampoline to dry, the next morning we could not walk outside. Hahahahah our entire back yard was thick with nats 😂😂😂
Oh gosh, what a story!
😂😂😂😂👌
@Charles Mendeley fruit flies... Little bugs that nature sends to gobble up fructose juice
That's funny.
Omg 😂 sometimes those annoyances wind up being the best precious memories.
I forgot to say THANKS for the zest idea. I just made your pine tar recipe( which is lovely) and I used lime and tea tree EO in it and almost a week later my tiny house still has that nice smell in it from the curing soap, anyway the next time I make pine tar I’ll add Lime zest too! You’ve opened up a whole new zesty world for me😉
Oh lovely! Wow, the lime zest in the pine tar soap would be amazing!
I've made my best soaps from your easy to follow instructions. Thanks for keeping it simple
I’m so glad you used ingredients from scratch. Now I don’t have to buy orange zest powder because you taught me how to do mine 😊 so glad to find your channel.
Thank you Fatma!
After watching your videos I have finally gathered the courage to make my very first loaf of soap. I picked this one to start yesterday and it was really difficult to wait 24 hours. I'm glad I did: it turned out beautifully: the colour is uniform, the smell is very light as I didn't use essential oils but still lovely. The only problem I had was that it didn't fill my mould. After checking I found that it's because the ingredients add up to 1038g but I used a 1200g mould like in the video. I will have to adapt the quantities for next time (I've seen you made a very clear video for that) but, in the meantime, I'm extatic. Thank you so much for making your videos so simple to follow. :-)
That's so wonderful to hear, thanks for sharing your success. I'm very happy for you!
This is gorgeous, love your idea of using the orange peel,so kind of you for taking the time to show us how to make the peel.
Thank you, you're welcome!
Thanks for sharing with us. I find myself smiling through your entire video. I can't wait to try this recipe.
Oh, that's so wonderful. I found that too when I was putting this video together. Thank you so much x

Thank you! Yes, I love the speckled texture too :)

Lovely, simple video to watch! 💕 love how your work station is so tidy & neat, nice music. Enjoy natural ingredients, beautiful soap!
Thank you so much!
Thank you, I so enjoy your tutorials. This soap looks beautiful and delicate. Thank you so much Elly for making us part of your soap making life. I just love it!! Besos from La Florida!
Your soaps are so beautiful. I find peeling the zest with a sharp potato peeler is perfect. So quick and easy and takes off just the zest beautifully.
Thanks for the tip. My peeler is blunt unfortunately!
Finally got around to making this. It smells amazing.
Thanks Elly
looking forward to more videos
Thank you, that's great!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Elly, could you add an essential oil to this recipe as well? I'm gearing up to make my first batch of soaps and I think I'd like to try this recipe for my first time.. Thank you for the videos! Keep them coming!
Thank you Elly… i just made my first batch of Orange zest from my organic oranges, mandatins & lemon. Such a citrus blast. I used my ninja too to grind it up. Im an Aussie living in Corinth Greece now. Thank you for inspiring me with your tutorials. You’re amazing 👍🏼
Wonderful, Anna!
I love the receipt... The music was perfect for the type of soap being made.
When you first unmolded the soap I saw your pot holder on the bottom and thought at first you'd had a volcano or something! Looks great! I go through lots of lemons and limes so I'll try this with those.
Haha thank you, enjoy!

Thank you. Yes it's a lovely simple soap, if you have oranges that is!
Thank you for subscribing too, I am planning some more videos soon.
The music was cute when you were chopping those bars and I loved 'a few oranges later' 😊
I'm from your sourdough fan club and have never thought of making soap in my life. You make everything look so satisfying - I think I might have to give it a go! I just know I'll enjoy whatever video you make, and I do 👍🏻

But do we have to use Sodium Hydroxide, can it be replaced by something natural?
@@user-ix6zt8pz3n Yes you do, and sodium hydroxide IS natural, it's made from salt and water. It is what saponifies the oil (converts it from oil to hard soap). Soft/liquid soap requires potassium hydroxide (a different form of lye made from ash and water). Once the soap is cured, no lye (nor water, nor oil unless you've superfatted) remains.
Hey Elly! I made this soap yesterday with calendula infused olive oil and it turned out perfect!!! I`m so glad I found you as you gave me the courage to start making my own soaps - I have skin issues and am trying to avoid all store bought cosmetics, cleaning products etc. I also made your laundry soap and am so grateful! It cleans good and leaves everything nice and soft. Thank you and God bless you!
You are so welcome!

Ah wow. That's cool. I love this video too.
Hi Elly - I've just tried this recipe with lime and it's absolutely gorgeous! Thank you 👍
Wow! That would be great! I can smell it from here :)
Elly's Everyday it’s citrusy that’s for sure 🤣
How was the scent of the Lime Soap? Mild/Strong? - I've used Lime Essential Oil for my Melt & Pour and would love to have this natural ingredient in my soap. Will it exfoliate?
Robert Duran Hey Robert! I used Elly’s gorgeous recipe along with Trisha’s lime zest tip recently - thank you both so much, Elly ❤️ and Trisha 🥰 - and the soap is definitely exfoliating. Mine smells clean but the lime zest fragrance didn’t come through in mine unfortunately. But the soap is gorgeous - love your recipe, Elly 🥰 - and I’m going to make another batch without the zest and with Lime-Litsea essential oil fragrances. LOVE your channel and you, Elly! Thank you so much. ❤️
Thanku Elly, im new to soap making, im going to try making this soap. Much appreciated ❤
Gorgeous - thank you for sharing your technique!

I recently came across your channel! Love your soothing voice & def agree about the cutting. It’s the best part of making soap!!!
Thanks so much Liz, that's very kind :)
Hi Elly
Thanks for posting this, I'm hoping to give it a try soon.
You're welcome. Good luck!
Hi Ellie... I love this simple soap and the recipe also seems great. Looking forward to trying it with some 5 or 10x orange essential oils, maybe even a touch of grapefruit and lavender. It looks great, love that the peel seems to keep its colour rather than turning slightly brown. Thanks so much for sharing this!
You're welcome Patrick! I love your essential oil choices, I have tenfold orange which is fantastic, unfortunately grapefruit doesn't seem to last well in soap. Lavender would be nice. Litsea cubea or lemon myrtle would also go well with the orange if you want to stick to citrus scents.
Thank you , thats so simple but so beautiful xx
Thank you so much. That's exactly what I was trying to demonstrate :)

Beautiful soap Elly! Love the music also, reminds of an artist from my home country of Cameroon. His name is Richard Bona.
Oh, thank you! I'll look him up! I love all kinds of music from all over the world!
Hello Elly. I used an online soap calculator. I had 610 g of oils/butters, water 181g and a.soda 75g.
I put olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, shea butter, castor oil and sweet almond oil.
Oh lovely!
Gorgeous! The orange smells good even through the video!
Thank you!
This is stunning!
Really enjoying the music too! Great video, I may just make this as my first soap! I don't like the taste of oranges, but I love the scent! Also liked the tutorial for beginners video, very informative and straight forward. Thanks (:
Thank you Kelley :)
Thanks for sharing the art of making these devine soaps. BTW I have 6 lemon trees in my backyard and going to try to make some soap with the zest. Love your videos greetings from South Africa 😊

Hi Elly, thank you so much for sharing your soap recipes! I have done the castile soap (amazing) and I just made the orange zest soap, it is lovely and it smells so good. I didn't have castor oil, so my soap has only coconut and olive oil. It cracked a little bit while I was cutting but should be fine ;) I love your videos. Greetings from Brazil!
That's wonderful Larissa, congratulations!
Thanks again for another great video! I bet Meyer lemon soap would be marvelous too!
Thank you, yes, Meyer lemon would be great! I have a Meyer lemon tree too but haven't used it for soap yet.

that looks amazing, thanks for the video and the recipe
Thank you, you're welcome!
This looks really loverly Elly..I have made 3 soaps so far after watching your tutorials..the 1st one was an utter disaster I was so anxious that I forgot to let the lye solution cool down and put it straight in and of course it seized.. but then I made pine tar soap and yesterday I made 100% coconut soap which is gorgeous
next Im going to make Soleseife (German Brine )Salt soap..Im having so much fun making these all because YOU gave me the confidence to TRY IT..so thankyou Elly..just one problem...ITS HARD TO WAIT FOR CURE..lol
Thank you so much Roslyn! I'm so glad you're really getting into your soap making and that I was able to help you! That really makes my day :) I love the sound of the coal tar soap. I've never made it but it makes me think of my Dad. He used to use it when I was a kid :)
Where can i buy those ingredients especially the lye solution ?
@@rosemariedungo2336 Are you in Brisbane AU I bought my lye from Coles supermarket..its in the cleaning section where you buy drain cleaner..its called "White Tulip Caustic Soda" in a white container with a red top/lid..hope it helps
Unfortunately, i'm in Missouri, but thank you anyway for your effort.

Wonderful!
Mmm, now I want orange sourdough bread! Thank you for showing the full process.
You're welcome! Orange zest goes really well in an Eastern European style spiced rye sourdough bread - but that''s a whole other video! One for the list ;)
so lovely n refreshing your art piece ms Elly !!
i wonder why some people need to boiled their oil before mixing with lye..
why is that for?
It depends on the oils you are using. If you're using solid oils and waxes, they need to be heated and melted first before you can make the soap. If you're using soft oils, there's not need to heat :)
Love love love!!
You make me feel like I can do it!
You can!! :)
Hi Elly, I have been watching all your soap recipes and loving them. You make it so simple and lovely. I have recently started soap making and your videos are the best for me as a beginner as most of the ingredients are readily available.
