Long story,,,haven’t ridden in over 50yrs, I’m 73 now and I acquired a 25 yr old 17 hand Percheron 1650lbs (X calèche horse) I have not been doing very much other then feeding, brushing and turning him out to pasture during the summer mths. He prefers staying outside during the winterr but has access to the barns shelter. Oh yeah he has Wobblers , and has a difficult time getting up, but a lot better now that he is in my care. I am going to ride him and he is rideable But I am scarred just to be so high up..the saddle I will be buying is a Kent & Masters all purpose saddle.. I do intend on just walking maybe a trot if I feel brave. I do enjoy your videos, hope I can pull it off without breaking any bones. I retired 3 yrs ago and moved closer to my horse so I have a daily routine with him and his buddies..

A number of yrs ago...I heard a gentleman say, “that man is a class act”, over the road of life I’ve come to understand his statement...and here is a fine example. Pat (and Deb), please excuse my use of informalities in using your first names without really knowing you folks, but you are a class act.
These horses understand they are in the presence of greatness, us humans take longer.

Hello Pat and thank you for this video. It`s the first one that I have come across that shows how to work thru with an unco-operative horse. I am 82 yrs of age and still riding green horses. I have been a breeder of Arabian horses for 35 yrs. I don`t ever seem to stop working on and trying to improve my training techniqus with these horses. As an older trainer, you have given me a whole different background as where many of these ideas came from. Again, thank you and your wife for all of the hours that you give to helping all of us that are not as far along with our horses that we would like to be. You make us better for what we attenpt to do.

I had to rewind.... couldn't hear a thing you said while I was laughing & snorting so hard at "this high grade....broom stick. They're $19.95 in case your wondering.... " throws stick out of corral. "String comes in 3 colors". Good grief that was hilarious. I have this problem with my mare because someone overused a whip on her back heels from the ground and the saddle. Her nose & front quarters are constantly in my space and she whips her hindquarters around like she just got stuck with cattle prod set on kill mode. She's been greeted with the flat of my hand numerous times. Will get to work with her on skills taught in this video. She's got to get past this whip mental block. 2 weeks ago she blew sky high when she thought I touched her rump with a whip when she felt a rope touch her. So thankful I wasn't in the saddle. This same person who used the whip also used a spade bit when I told him 'don't put a bit in her mouth'. You guessed it. He was on the ground in .01 seconds.

There are many of us amateurs who need the perhaps remedial training of the human. Thus the groundwork involving a stick and string have allowed me to learn enough to understand the concept of your video. All the groundwork using stick and string that I have seen goal is progress beyond using stick ultimately to liberty. And no I don’t sell anybody’s products. I still like your videos.

What's not to like when a man teaches his student with honest love. Then he uses gentle coaxing so the horse know's that he can trust this human. A BEATING IS A BEATING. But love and patients will always win out and you will always end up with a better partner. Pat you are a very SAVVY gentleman. That is why you and your partner Deb are together so long. Thanks so much for this video. I have a new horse( his name is Larry also) who I have tried to get away from the flag. Every time I have a lesson, they want me to use the flag because " he's lazy"'. I don't think he is, I agree with what you said about the flag making him move his hindquarters away. I have tried pointing the flag to his belly, so he would shape around it. I can see what I have to do now. I want him to move on a feel, but he doesn't pay attention. I see him so differently than everyone else who has known him, and his previous owner, who had him since birth until age 13. I've had him for 2 years and I feel like he started out good, but we are not connecting. I am used to using very little pressure, and he will ignore me. Everyone says I need to be harder, firmer on him. I have never done that, I'm 64, and I"m not going to start now. Well, he is getting used to light cues, but it's really taking time. My last horse was green broke and I worked with him doing a lot of groundwork, what I would call properly. And he would do anything on just a feel. I know my new horse knows this stuff, so this video has really encouraged me. (I didn't mean to write a book. lol)

I'm really enjoying these vids on some of the subtleties that set foundations. And thank you, thank you for addressing when a training tool stops being one. Some folks are more into their tools than the goals they are trying to accomplish. Not every horse will need that tool or react the same way to it. The Horse has to set the pace. But, you have to be able to See and Feel where they are to make the adjustments. Blessings to you both.

Shod horses,for a Gal,who told me she was giving a clinic on training in a Hackamore...Her Bosal was not shaped and it was so long,it bout hung to the horses knees and she had umpteen gillion wraps on the damn thing..I told her,she might want to learn about how to fit one first,before she teaches any clinics about em..I never got called back..
Tightwad Todd I’ve always been told the bosal had to be fitted to the horse. Learn something everyday and make it first hand information. Just because I say or they say it’s right doesn’t make it so. Pat explains it so you can see why it’s right.

I don't have a combo tool, I need to put a hook at the end of my flag... We trailer loaded a "bovine terrorist" recently and fished the rope off(essential tool on the back of every flat bed) Great explanation of how a horse needs to be bent at the ribs...

I have spoken to lots of people that say oh ya l Javed watched him but never sub. share or like . What l am saying is you are more popular than the computer is telling you. So keep up with the videos . Like watching not riding rite now recuperating but will be at it again . My colt arrives in about 5 days . I would love to sit and talk horse but that is not likely to happen now .

Larry is shod. Most people who send horses to us unshod. It’s easier to rope them that way. Then Pat puts shoes on them right away because of the rocks and decomposed granite we have here.
When told to do a task, one wants the horse to respond, not react.

if you stand behind "drive line" ???? in my enxpirienc I saw the problem but my knowledge its "poor" and I always stay behinde shoulders ? . On begining I give pressure on the neck but always begin with lite pressure ? (sry for for my bad eng. I hope u undrstend)
My retired horse has the brand of the goat, but his is because when he gets up off the ground he goes butt high first with his front end on his knees, then stands on one front hoof and then the other. But he surely has a brand of the goat.

How do you feel about general Jackson
I had to explain what a bosal was to a rider from across the pond... They don't use them very often in the UK or Europe ( other than Spain perhaps?).
We’ve never seen a bosal in Spain. They use a serreta which is a bent piece of metal that sits on the nose with rings on each side. Similar to a side pull but a bit more severe. The bosal was an invention that came up from Mexico but nobody seems to know for sure.
@@PatnDebPuckett thanks Deb. That's why I put the question mark. The Mexican calberros probebly used the materials they had ( horse hair) to fashion something similar to what had been used in Spain...great invention!

This is exactly what my 9 yo gelding does. After first viewing of this video I tried your method and got very frustrated at his lack of willingness to just go forward. Watching this video again, to learn how better to teach him the 'feel'. My horse DOES NOT go forward in a round pen. I now realize I used a weapon, not a tool. YIKES. I've tried the 'here it comes' (ask, ask again, here it comes!) with a lunge whip with extremely little positive results. He just moves his hindquarters away and becomes defiant. He will move better swinging a rope, though. He is a good horse under saddle; knows leg cues and all. But I need to go back to 'rebuild that connection'. Questions: 1. What do you mean by "all the humans time is spent on the left" and why does that make him hesitant on that side? 2. Do you think physical stature has any bearing on the horse? I'm 5'4, you are 6'4 and can look him in the eye when his head goes up. Thanks, Larry.

Larry is such a beautiful horse. Stopped watching when you slapped it, he's been through enough abuse.
Larry was "pushing" him. It had to be corrected instantly. "pushing" is an attempt to get the human to move HIS feet. It's a bully tactic by the horse to establish dominance. If you let the horse get away with it, he then starts to become dangerous, and more severe correction is necessary. Larry was not "hurt" by that correction, in fact he was helped one more step away from the "meat-wagon".
